  • We Wear the Mask
We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,-
    This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
    And mouth with myriad subtleties.
Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
    We wear the mask.
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
    Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
    We wear the mask!

This is my favorite poem to date. I remember being introduced to it in 5th grade Mr. Smith class. It’s always and forever since that day been the most beautiful, saddest literature I have ever read. You must know absolute internal depth to even begin to dissect further from the surface.

Thank you honorable King Paul Lawrence Dunbar.. for capturing our pain and the great depth and damage of a unrelenting cruel society. A so called civilization that takes from us.. our music our style our beauty our parents/ inventions our swag and our truth.
We are shedding our make and injustice must finally shed there’s As We’ll!

For EVERY human that must walk in this dread of life.
This work of veracity is timeless, since humanity took its first breath.
What comprehension/compassionate soul, Mr. Dunbar was.

      Interesting your judgement.
I suppose you don’t deeply identify with the Melianated ancestors.😍
Further more why is it your concern???
Good luck to you in your travels ..
My walk is fabulous and not in need of comments like yours.

@@roxiet7016 public forum, i will comment as I wish. The poem is one of my favorite poems of all time by one of he greatest poets of all time. She did a horrible job of reciting it. She did a perfect job of reciting it the first time i heard her on the NOVA program in the 1980's. I don't have to identify with anything to appreciate or not appreciate something. If your walk is so fabulous then why does my comment bother you? And by the way, I met her once and showed her great respect and politeness and she was rude and overbearing. And I have read all of her books and know her history. She is/was strong enough to appreciate my critical review.

The pain is universal the intensities & struggles may vary but it hurts the soul of every body.
We all wear masks on social medias, are afraid to be ourselves, are afraid to speak up, have poor emotional & metal health but still make meme's & laugh on it
    Listen!
    They had masks,
    We have memes .
Where is the human to human talk?
    Can we please?
Let off your insecurities i am here to help,
Beacuse if we don't stand together today soon it will end.
Get yourself, up brush it off & march
Hold your own hand & shoot to the arch.

Awesome poem, the comments sections prove that some people don't care about black pain.
Update: Someone MrLedHead68, responded in an annoyed manner and claimed that "pain knows no color, no zex, nor age" What a silly response. The poem is not discussing that, nor am I. I'm mentioning how privileged people don't care about black pain and even take it for their own exploitation and general discussions. Blacks can't even go through racism the express the damage it causes without someone else claiming that they know better than the blacks, what they meant to say, and culturally appropriate even the pain of black people. I took off my mask to respond to the nonsense.
Update: The male Karen is still going at it in the chat with me. Refuses to accept that the poem is about the way blacks mask our pain-- he wants to project his privilege into the past and present and make the poem about all people's pain. Another All Lives Matter moment when a black person dies, brought to you by religious dogma, white nationalism, and (some) white people's ignorance and arrogance.

The awe-inspiring level of this poem, is that it touches every 'soul' that undertakes the hard plight of living.
Pain knows no color, no sex, nor age.

Who are these privileged people you speak of?
You use your mask as a weapon to cover your pain, by blaming others who have not harmed you.
Lowering your mask in responds, only shows a scared human, lashing out with hate.
Still hating me for being human, too?
Then do something for people TODAY!

Global, what was false with what Ledhead wrote?
It is a beautiful poem, about how hard life is and 'we' all wear a mask. Why bring race up? Just be a 'good' human.

@@froggycroaked1603 You've possibly heard of moving the goalpost and strawman arguments, etc. Well, the original Paul Laurence Dunbar poem was about black people and how they have to wear different masks to get around racism, bigotry, pain. MrLedHead69's response ignored that fact and projected a new theme into the equation, throwing blacks and the lynchings, slavery, and present brutality (and online bullying) they face under the bus. And when they say these things there's always a Karen or Ken that claims "you're using the race card" -- it's impossible for blacks to get justice with so many levels of racists everywhere! Peace.
