This is my step-by-step painting guide on how to paint Overgrown Necrons using the models from the Warhammer 40000 Indomitus Box set for use in 9th Edition. This could be used as a speed painting technique for an entire army. So why not give it a try?
I used lots of different basing products including;
Dried Tea
Flock
Grass Tufts
Twigs
And two items from Geek Gaming which you can buy here -
Tree Canopy - www.geekgaming...
Arid Earth - www.geekgaming...
I made my own wash. There are lots of guides online, one really good one is from Midwinter Minis here - • Easy, cheap DIY dip wa...
These are the plants I used, Barbed Bracken - www.games-work...
You can get lots of basing materials free in Nature so if you are on a budget don't be scared to go out scavenging in the Woods or Beach. If you do this just wait until the scavenged parts are dry.

This channel is about painting converting and kitbashing miniatures for your warhammer & d&d games, Age of sigmar and warhammer 40k games. I will maybe paint Space Marines, Space Wolves, Stormcast Eternals, cities of sigmar, chaos space marines, painting scale models, miniature busts in the future. I haven't ever tried How to paint NMM. I've done guides on how to paint warhammer, how to paint d&D I may do a conversion guide for Darktide or Dark tide however it is spelled. And in the future I will build and paint some terrain for my miniature war gaming wargaming
Absolutely stunning. Giving me big Annihilation vibes with these.
Thanks 😊
Can you imagine these against the sylvaneth?! Would make such a good dio. I’d love a model of the fractal alien from Annihilation, painted in colour shifts!
2 years after uploading this video, it still inspire people, including me, mate ! I'm currently going to start a necron army and this will be the scheme i'm using for sure!
Thank you very much for uploading this. It's cool af.
Awesome! Glad I inspired you :) enjoy! It's lots of fun
Easily the coolest and most unique model design I’ve seen in my short time researching 40k painting. Also, very well edited and helpful video. You crushed it. Thank you!
Thanks alot :) glad you enjoyed it I've also done a silent king and monolith in the same style. Check out my vids on those if you like this.
If anyone plays destiny, this gives me black garden vex vibes.
Agreed;]
Yes
That's exactly why I clicked on this vid, gave me d1 vibes
My immediate thoughts. I used to play D1 and I love the black garden and its general vibe. So I think I'd wanna make vex style necrons
Yea it totally gives totally sole devicive vex in the ishtar sink vibes
Now i can start to collect Necrons again. I found my scheme. Thank you.
Great! Glad you liked it :)
This gives me a cool idea to do the Walkers from All Quiet/Martian Front
Amazing take on the necron with that overgroth jungle theme! Well done!
Thank you :) if you enjoyed it consided subscribing for more vids :)
This is exactly what I was looking for!! Brilliant. I was thinking like overwatch bastian
Glad you found it then :) check out the monolith video I did. That is version 2.0 :)
@@SlayerMiniatures ok thanks
Christ dude, it is yet another video of yours in which I am amazed by your design sense. Above and beyond any popular figurine painting creator on this side of yt. Your colour and blending choices are stunning on their own, but on top of that your kitbashing skills are so strong. Rarely a weak choice, the themes you are going for are cohesive and so well-done. Will definitely stay here to learn a lot from you.
Wow thanks alot :) best feedback ever! Glad you have enjoyed what I have done so far, I'm very excited to do more videos. More to come soon!
@@SlayerMiniatures Yeah even without the plants part it is a big inspiration for me on how to do my necrons. I really like the crackle paint look, too.
I am so gonna paint my indomitus necron army like this. this is just amazing and painting on a whole other level
Glad you like it. Give it a go!
so i was googling inspiration because i wanted to make this and it turns our someone made this already
awesome work!
I found this scheme ages ago and could never find find guide for it! So I made one. Some of the best examples I've seen are eyecon74 check him out! instagram.com/eyecon74?
@@SlayerMiniatures cool, thanks
Lord the glowing effect is possibly the best I've ever seen. Especially before you went to the white after the fluro. I think I'd have stopped there. Absolutely bonkers. Cheers mate subscribed
Thanks Justin. Check out the monolith if you liked this!
they look amazing
Thanks alot :)
Dude ive been thinking of doing something like this for ages, but more swampy. This is so useful thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! There are some cool swamp crons on Pinterest
This is amazing, most creative painting and adorning of Necrons I've seen. Given me some great inspiration for what to do with mine!
Great 😀 glad I inspired you 😀
Somehow ended up here after looking for good forest base ideas, then I realised that I have some unpainted necrons and now I know exactly the scheme they're being painted as. Thanks for the video
Ha great! Glad I inspired you :) if you like this vid, check out my monolith vid too, that uses some newer techniques
Dude. So amazing in quality and theme. I really like how you went about the glow effects with the orange, especially the spines!
Thanks 😊 I think these would look odd with the traditional green glow. Hence the orange/yellow glow
That my man is fantastic
Thank you 😊
Love it! I don’t even play 40k and now i want a necron army:) honesty i think this concept is by far the best I've seen for necrons, reminds me a of the robots in "Laputa, castle in the sky".
Thanks for the kind words 😃 i havent heard of that, is it a show?
Glad you were inspired, that's the whole point of me sharing my work. If you like this theme have a look on Pinterest and Instagram for other examples. Some people do swamp themed ones too.
@@SlayerMiniatures it's a anime from studio Ghibli, highly recommend it:) I'll try to check out the other stuff for sure!
I love this scheme for Necrons. Wonderful work. I found this video after watching your Eldar Wraithknight conversions ... now I want to build two new cool armies. Curse you!
Haha sorry! But also not sorry :) ha! Which is your favourite?
@@SlayerMiniatures The over-grown Necrons really stand out. Oh… there’s your Nighthaunt Grimdark video.. dammit.. that’s also great.
Wonderful narrative painting, might consider this scheme for mine.
Thanks :) I think I accidentally delete your other comment ha! I was going to tell you I did a whole video on the monolith you liked 👍
@@SlayerMiniatures yeah, found that video. Great stuff! Are you adding any more to this army?
Yeah, an obelisk, 3 doomstalkers, 3 heavy Destroyers, ctans. I'll do a whole army Video one day
i might have to "borrow" this idea and try it on my annihilation barge along with the vines from your monolith conversion
Borrow away! I made the guide for people to use :D share you progress with me on instagram if you have it :D
@@SlayerMiniatures thanx been having ideas of making sparks from fine fuse wire in a 3d star shape (like a exploding firework) painted black then wire tips painted in a electric blue or white

Glad I could help :) I'm making a monolith next. Vid coming soon:)
Awesome work

This would be great for swamp themed Necrons.
very cool concept, might give it a try. The filming where things were very close and out of focus every now and then was a bit straining on the eyes though.
Thanks Jules! I'd like to say I've improved somewhat from my first videos :) you are so right though. Wobbly camera is not good!
Im doing painting videos myself but these look fantastic . A great idea and really stand out and very unique
Thank you. More coming soon!
Been wanting to do this overgrown theme and you’ve executed it perfectly. Bar maybe some rusty and slimy streaking effects this is exactly what I had in mind. Great job breaking it down into something viable for a batch paint as well. Liked n subbed
Thanks 😊 I was planning on a doing a Rust Necrons video in future. Could always do that as a base then add overgrowth too. Glad you liked the video.
Holy shnitz! This changes EVERYTHING

Well 2 days after watching this I bought the recruit edition. Really inspired by this, but expect to modify it somehow, maybe out of the swamps. GW should sponsor you.
Glad I inspired you :) sorry I made you spend money though haha.
There are some awesome necrons done in a swamp style on Pinterest! Swampcrons
Cool tutorial, really impressed by how straightforward you make this given the awesome end result. Would love to see how you'd approach painting the primaris marines from the indomitus - or even better the new SoB models! Also hats off to whoever is playing the organ in the background :)
Hi Sam, thanks very much. I love painting in a grimdark style and have some sisters to paint. So watch this space!
I have received 2 indomitus boxes ... I want the same army than this :o A great inspiration thanks ;)
Glad I inspired you :) enjoy making them
Great job man! It gives them such a great back story.
Thank you :) yeah its adds something to them other than just being generic silver robots
I hope you don't mind if I use this concept for my kill-team. Genius and looks stunning!!
Yeah go ahead! The whole reason I make videos is so people have ideas on what to do :) you don't need to ask permission.
Have fun! 😊
Really great music; aaaaand you're very talented. Subbed!

I guess these guys would do well in Catachan.
Haha yes, pre camouflaged ha!
Looks great, watching this got me wondering what it would look like if the osl went white base layer black stipple then ink then repeat for the yellow portion. I really did like the black lining around the osl though the contrast bump was a nice touch.
Hmmm, I wonder what that will look like. You'll have to give it a go!
this is insane!!! great job
Thanks glad you like it
Freaking awesome 👏👏👏👏👏

Holy cats, is this brilliant creativity. Thank you for making this inspiring video. Unfortunately on my crappy desk speakers the music is mixed way too loud and sounds like death.
Yeah the music was too loud when i added it. Can't change it now though, unfortunately. My other videos should be better! Thanks for the feedback
DaYm!!!!!! im soooooo doing this thx heaps
Thank you 😊
Amazing. That moss was bought from a store but is it just dried out moss basically? Like the real deal you get from the outside world
Yeah, dried moss. It does darken a little over time, but I just put some flock over the top. Still looks great a year later
Beautiful work brother!
Thank you :D
This chanel is helpful as I play as merphrit necrons and the painting of the blades is helpfull as they are the same
😃
This army is so crazy dude. i love your work. Im Starting at the moment after 8 years stoping 40k with necrons and i think i will do it like you... on every event the people will stand at gaming table with open mouths. Only problem what i see is the transport. i play many competitiv games and must transport these guys and i think the vegetation will broke of after time more and more. do you have any tipp for transport maybe? I hope you bring more tutorials from these guys in future. Barks and stuff like this i need to copie this :D :D :D
I would recommend doing a scenic glue spray over the top, or a light varnish and that will secure the vegetation in place. I've only had small amounts of flock come off mine. I magnetise all the bases and carry them in 'Really Useful Boxes'
Hey I've just found this video and it's really inspired me to try this with my army so thanks and keep up the great work. Just one question how is it that you make your ink wash I've looked everywhere but I can't find any videos explaining it well?
Hi Henry! Glad you liked it 😊 there is a link in the video description to a guide from Midwinter Minis on how to do the wash. That's the guide I used. Enjoy!
I was considering the I do it’s box for the necromancy half and thus just seal the deal, absolutely stunning! I don’t want to copy it exactly and since I don’t have much experience, have you experimented with other glow colors for necrons apart from the default lime green and this orange?
I've seen a few people do a pink/purple glow which looks awesome. And also some amazing done with a blue glow! Looks extra creepy as blue, and would contrast well with the vegetation
This is so cool man, you need way more subs! I am beyond chuffed I found this, been looking around for some methods for this kind of look for ages, love it! Is there any way you could show how you could do warriors in different ways? Keep 'em coming :)
Thanks 😊 glad you like the vid. See my latest for the Silent King if you want more ideas. I have to finish my Warriors still so recording how I make them look different may be a good idea 💡 Watch this space :)
amazing
Thank you Nazradin! Glad you liked it
Amazing that's my kill team sorted
Thank you! Enjoy!
This deserves way more views
:D thanks. Feel free to share! Silent King video coming soon
This looks great, did you attempt to seal the flock or foliage at all?
I havent sealed them, but its easy to do with scenic glue and a bit of isopropyl. I plan to do all of mine at one point. It's not completely necessary but stops having flock all over your battlefield
@@SlayerMiniatures thank you for that suggestion, I was concerned my case might end up full of flock, grass, tree bits 😀
@@BMJYDK yeah so mine went straight into a display case. But so easy to seal them. I'd recommend it if you are transporting them alot
Woah dope
Thanks :)
awesome job dude! quick question though: does the moss and grass gradually fall off over time or does it stick permanently? id love to try this design but i dont want the mess all the time or sticking to foam in my carrier case
I sprayed mine with scenic glue and then isopropyl. It sealed it well and hardly any comes off. I use magnets to store mine too so it doesn't rub on sponge etc
Love it! What airbrush do you use and what sized nozzle? Thanks!
I use an iwata airbrush, I used the Neo for years and then upgraded. The needle is the same in all iwata. 0.3 I think?
This is simply amazing work! Really inspired me to get back into the hobby. My only question is after you finish all that off how do you ensure it does fall off in use/transit?
I've seen that on Geek Gaming they have a "Matt Scenic Sealant Spray". I assume that will do the job but just thought I'd ask from a pro!
I havent transported mine much. Only a few times and my bases have been magnetised to make it easier. I do plan to seal all mine with matte sealant though! Makes it alot more rigid and protects it all. There are lots of guides online on how to make your own. Its normally just PVA glue, water and some isopropyl.
@@SlayerMiniatures Only travelling would be in a magnetised box carefully to place Killteam or something similar so not huge travelling.
Also you say you can achieve the glow effect you do with a brush too. How you would do that? Any tips? Just cause I'm not able to invest in an airbrush at the moment
NICE
Thanks alot :D
have a few questions, for the plasmacyte how did you paint the stone, what nozzles did you use on the airbrush, what is the name of the green flock, and where did you get the rose tea/dried tea?
The stone is just a grey with the same wash over it.
The airbrush is an iwata Neo, so it's a 0.3?
The flock is something I got in a train shop about 20 years ago so I'm not sure what it's called.
The tea - I made it myself. I did a video on how to make it. Just empty a used tea bag and bake it until dry. That's it
@@SlayerMiniatures Thank you.
looking like something you would see in "the dark crystal"
Yeah its a cool scheme isn't it?
@@SlayerMiniatures very neat!
never would have come up with something like that!
Brilliant. As a Canadian we do not say that lightly.
Thank you :) I am truly grateful.
No. Thank you. I truly appreciate being pushed up to the next level in this hobby. Never seen anyone going with this, and honestly necrons where the last on my list. The aesthetic is marvellous and your editing and background music is perfect for this video. Perfect pacing, even made a “happy little mistake” and kept rollin. Good job sir.
Was Martian ironcrust was applied after the orange/yellow paint was applied correct to the blades.
Ironearth was used on top of the bare plastic. Then painted over
@@SlayerMiniatures thanks i think thats all i need to know.
@@Henry__MiIIer on the blades? I used the same orange and yellow paint for the glow, but drybrushed onto the blades.
Definitely gonna be trying this, but with the use of the moss stuff, does it ever decay or dry? Or will the models stay looking like that
Two years on and look great. Some moss has gone a bit browner but as you see in the video I add flock to that too so it stays green. Honestly don't think it will darken more than it is now. So it will stay good for ever
@@SlayerMiniatures awesome, just picked up some dudes and excited to try it out
How well does the moss and such hold up to travelling and playing with or is it really just for display? Great video. Cheers!
I have used them a few times for games and I try to avoid touching the moss areas as inevitably over time it will come off if repeatedly handled. I also sprayed mine with matte varnish to seal them
How do you seal the jobs? Doing a wild hunt sisters that's also got a bit of overgrowth on the models. Do you just spray a mat varnish over everything lightly or what?
Yeah I just used matte varnish. You could spray it with scenic glue and then isopropyl - this is how people seal dioramas. Check out Geek Gaming Scenics RUclips. Luke does lots of guides on it. The pva used on the models in my video was enough to be honest but on some models I will use matte varnish.
Definitely doing this for my necrons!
Also is the music from EVE Online? Definitely recognise it.
Its not from eve as far as I'm aware. Its was free music off RUclips. Maybe the same producer ?
Glad you liked the necrons :)
Looks fantastic! Now I just need to find an American company that makes similar tree canopies. I'm pretty sure it wont ship from the UK due to it being actual plant matter. :(
You could always go out and find your own in a nearby Wood or Forest? Check out my Silent King video, as in that one I don't use any Moss. I just use Dried Tea and two flocks.
Michael s or hobby lobby
Absolutely awesome job! For sure going to give this a go, i have one question though.
If i wanted to play these minis ive been recommened to seal them in some way ie varnish,
how would you recommend finishing these or do you think theyll be fairly fine without?
Thanks and deffo give it a job! Yeah I would recommend sealing them after everything is completely dry. Oils take a little longer to dry so I'd give it a good 48hrs then give them a spray with a matte varnish. If you want the Daemon flesh to look wet then paint on a gloss on those bits.
It's not necessary to varnish but protects your paint job.
@@SlayerMiniatures Hey, I was wondering how you thinned the fluorecent orange for airbrushing? I don't know whether it's me or not, but I find it goes really stringy and clumpy despite working through different levels of thinning to the point of over thinning it.... Making it almost impossible to spray on as it clogs my airbrush then fires a runny blast that leaves bad ripples :'( I'm using Vallejo airbrush thinner too
@@moogieman99 I thinned it with vallejo airbrush thinner. You need to make it thin like the consistency of skimmed milk. I mix it up in a container before putting it into the brush. That makes sure you don't have unmixed paint in the bottom of the brush. Also...makes sure you shake the paint thoroughly
This is amazing I really wanna have a go at doing this now, if thats alright?
Yeah ofcourse! Whole reason I made a video is to inspire people to try it, to try something different and think outside the box :)
@@SlayerMiniatures well you definitely have me inspired, I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out
These are awesome between the Gorecrons I saw on Reddit and now these I’m having seconds thought about my buggy Bois ngl
Glad you liked them. You could always do test models. The 'plant material' could easily be removed or paint stripped if you wanted to try different schemes. I always test new schemes out on a single model that i paint over and over. Poor thing haha.
how is the moss color holding up? did you stabilize it in some way or what, because in my experience moss tends to lose its color over time
The moss I did apply did have some flock added to it after and its great. Over a year later when the models are still good. I'd suggest applying a scenic glue over the models to help all the flock stick :)
@@SlayerMiniatures oh i see, thanks! i am going for a similar look although a bit more like a rainforest and i have been trying some stuff to stabilize my moss because i also do terrariums and the moment that stuff dies it tends to become brown very quickly.
@@valejera1374 yeah its inevitable that it will go brown over time which is why I apply flock over the top. Blends in quite well to be honest! I'd love to see your models when you are finished. Send pics to me on Instagram if you have it
@@SlayerMiniatures sure will do mate! also i do remember that adding some kind of aniline pigment to water and then soaking moss into it is a way to mantain it green long term
@@valejera1374 oh sweet! Good tip!
i love this so much!! thank you for the tutorial :) i want to do my army after this style but i was wondering how you painted the swords?
The swords are painted with the same orange and yellow. Just dry brushed.
I have officially decided then. I'm doing this with my Necrons. I do wonder how to translate it to the flyers
Check out eyecon74 on Instagram. His stuff is amazing
How much did you thin the orange through the airbrush? And what psi? I'd really appreciate it if you had the time to answer, because I've been trying to get the glow effect but it isn't working for me :(
Consistency of single cream, psi was 20 :)
@@SlayerMiniatures tysm!

They are just dry brushed using the same colours as the glow effect. Orange and yellow ink
it's masterpiece!!!!
Thanks :) a new vid is coming soon where I paint a monolith! Subscibe so you don't miss it
Wow this is amazing! I’m new to war hammer but not painting. I know you use scenic glue to keep the flock together but how do you go about keeping all the moss and lichen stuck and secure on your models? Surely they fall apart when put in foam cases?
Hi Oscar, I don't use foam, I magnetised the models and then put then in plastic storage boxes :) minimal handling on them them
@@SlayerMiniatures ah ok then. What do you recommend for storage and transport?
@@oscarkelly4707 ruclips.net/video/eKg8oPF4xfk/видео.html Duncan Rhodes' Guide is here and it's what I've done for all my Necrons
@@SlayerMiniatures oh nice! I love this guy I didn’t realise he had a video out like this. In which case, when using the scenic glue, do you paint it on or do you have a spray bottle? It’s the foliage that I’m worried about with such a cool idea as this 😅
@@oscarkelly4707no problem, I'd recommend spray, you can do it all in one go then.
Do you varnish afterwards to avoid all the vegetation falling of/spreading apart?
Yeah you can spray with a varnish lightly but best to use a scenic glue sealer :)
This is absolutely amazing. Liked and subscribed. I'm just getting started with Necrons, would you be offended if I attempted to copy this?
Thanks Paul 😊 I wouldnt be offended at all, I made the vids to share it and inspire others. There are lots of other versions on Instagram and Pinterest. Some people do swamp and aztec themed ones too. I'm making a monolith in this style too
Hey! Awesome job on the models. I’ve been thinking about getting back into the hobby with necrons but I don’t got an airbrush to do the glow effects what could work as a substitute?
You can easily do the same technique with dry brushing. I'm going to do two videos on how to do the glow effect. One with airbrush and one with normal brushes. I've had people ask me alot. Watch this space!
