well actually everybody who copyrighted something that was written before the creation of this site can ask to be paid from the site's creator or ask him to shut down his library
No, it isn't. It generates a random page based on running YOUR search text through a mathematical formula. It doesn't have ANY content in the library until someone does a search for it, and then it disappears after you get the location code (to tell the mathematical formula how to generate your search result again) and close the web page.
@@ericthex6510 It was there exactly, because it COPIED YOUR text into a page with randomly generated characters on the rest of the page. Nothing exists in the library until you search for it, and then it only exists in the library because YOU just put it there. The formula just copies YOUR text and then adds a bunch of random characters around it.
That's the whole point. It's an SCP that knows all yet knows nothing at the same time. You need the help from someone or something who knows only nothing to search with it
And that 99.999999999% of it is basically jibberish and/or false. Its basically like saying "Crazy to think an algorithm to calculate xx number of possibilities actually contains something thats contained in the xx possiblities".
@@unusedbrainsclub its useful if we could have a quantum computer that could replicate every scenario until finding the cure by eliminating the false from the correct answer.
You're right, it IS crazy to think it has all the answers, because it doesn't. It has no content until YOU add your search text to it, and then it it gone when you leave the site. The only content it has is the text you searched for.
Wrong. The library contains zero information at all. It copies your text, fills the rest of the page with gibberish, and then shows you a webpage. It give you the "code" to find your page so that you can give that "key" to the site's algorithm so the site can calculate the same page again and show it to you.
well i'm going to become the most knowledgeable man that have ever existed by reading the entire Library (assuming i read 1 page every 1 min ) i'll see you in 10^5000 mins well just around 10^4990 century
People saying that it's just generated on command just don't understand how this works. All of the pages and books are generated based on a code that already exists, meaning that in an informational sense, they already exist. You can always go back to the same page if you look in the same place with the same code. It's impossible for a computer to generate something random.
This library has every book ever written, this library has ever book that will ever be written, it has the exact time and date of your death and can go into great detail about your death. It holds your deepest secrets and your brightest dreams. This library knows all, you just need to know where to look.
What really bothers me is that in this library, somewhere, is a book containing the answers to every philosophical and existential question we've ever asked. How did the universe begin? Do we have a purpose? What is our future? All of the answers we seek are in one book, and the worst part is that we have absolutely no way to find it.
I can imagine using this to send secret messages to people. Like your walking down the street and you find a piece of paper pointing to a shelf, a row, a book, and a page so you can see the lyrics to Never Gonna Give You Up

For those that are still confused with the concept; Imagine writing a book where you list off every single word that can be formed using the latin alphabet. Where do you start? Well, one way you can start is by writing A B C D ... and so on until you reach Z, then you want to start writing words that contain 2 letters, so you restart the process and go aa ab ac ... and so on until you write az, and then you write ba, bb, bc... and so on. Eventually, you're going to write actual english words. For example; ... aq ar AS AT au av ... and so on. The word "as" and "at" will eventually show up in your book, as will "of", "it", and every 2 letter word. Eventually, you will reach zz. You will then begin to write 3 letter words, so you start by going aaa aab aac aad ... and so on. Just like how we find "as" and "at", eventually we will reach the combination of words that forms an actual word, such as ... baa bab bac BAD bae baf ... and so on. You will also eventually find words like "cat", "dog", "fat", etc. Do this over and over again. Where do you stop though? On 20 letter words? 30? No, computers can generate these things forever. There should be words that contain over a million letters in this library, and there should be even more. After an infinite amount of letters have been reached in a word, the library moves on to listing off 2 words. So, now we start off with a a a b a c ... eventually, we will get to things such as aa a ab a ac a ... and eventually, things like aaa aaaa aab aaaa aac aaaa In this sequence, you will eventually find sentences such as baa word bab word bac word BAD WORD bae word ... and so on. I don't exactly know if this library lists off words this exact way, but the theory is still the same. Basically, this library has infinite possibilities. Do this correctly, and by sheer brute force of writing every single word, sentence, and parapraghs, you can find every single possibility. You can eventually find a sequence that will state "god is real", as well as "god is not real". You can eventually find "you should not eat feces" and "you should eat feces". You get the idea.

@@randomguy-yu5os The search function by default probably just returns the one that has your phrase in the center. There are pages where it is at the top, the bottom, and every character in between. Ultimately, this is just a file encoding algorithm. If you feed the algorithm one thing, it will always spit out some other, specific thing. In this case, if you feed it a phrase, it will spit out a location reference, and the process can be reversed to give us the original phrase from the reference. At a very simple level, this happens with binary and text. Using ASCII character encoding, the binary string "011001000110111101100111" can be expressed as "dog", and I could express "dog" as "011001000110111101100111". Of course, using ASCII, encoding, I can express anything in the written English language. Every possibility already exists within the ASCII algorithm. The Library of Babel is a cool tool to help wrap your head around the massive potential of language, but it's not a particularly amazing piece of technology.
@@randomguy-yu5os Nah, if you were to find it manually it would still be there. No matter which computer/device/wifi network. It will forever be encoded there. Forever
It's like the infinite universe theory but on a smaller scale (3200 characters), everything that can possibly be written within 3200 characters can be generated. If there are 6 million ways to die and you choose one, that doesn't predict the future, it just means 1 out of 6 million times you will be right no matter what you pick. Ok for everyone who is interested: 1) The library of Babel is a short story (about 7 pages) written by Jorge Luis Borges. In this story, it describes the geometry and architecture of the Library. 2) In the story, it is mentioned that all the books in the library consist of 410 pages, and use the same font and characters, including space, comma, and period. 3) The story does not give details about if the books are organized in any particular order. This was invented by the website, not the author of the story. 4) Since all books are 410 pages, there is a finite (NOT INFINITE) amount of books that exist. Therefore it is a mistake to say that any combination of characters of any length can be found in a book in the library. It is a very large number (this is discussed in the story) but it is definitely not infinite. 5) The drawings that are shown in the website were made by other artists inspired by the story. By the time the drawings appeared, the author was almost completely blind. However he made some corrections in later editions that lrd to the drawings that you see in the website. 6) The library is said to extend in all directions horizontally. This is possible due to the hexagonal rooms architecture. However, it leaves the question open as to if the library is infinite and periodic or if it ends somewhere.
Pieces of text no more than 3200 characters are listed and can be found somewhere in every combination. So you will not find the complete works of William Shakespeare in the library, or at least the odds are very small. That would need a far bigger library.
@@coweatsman I guess if you divide the complete works of Shakespeare in chunks of 3200 characters, you might be able to find all chunks in the library (by no means easy), and assemble them together to form the corresponding Shakespeare books. Also, if the library were to be such that it is infinite, and books could be repeated and were in random order, then there is a chance that somewhere in the library, in a bookshelf, all the Shakespeare chunks happen to be sitting contiguous to one another in one batch and in the correct order. Would take a really long time to find it though :)

So when I say, every book that exists, every book yet to be written, every sentance ever said, every sentance that will ever be said or could be said, even what I have just said, is in that library...I mean it. That library contains about 10^5000 pages. In case you dont know, that number is 1 followed by 5000 zeros. This library is truly incredible.
Okay, let's assume the guy takes an hour to read one 410 page book. There are approximately 10 with 1800300 zeros at the back according to the Spanish book. That would take him approximately that many hours and since the universe is expected to die around a Googel years later. The man would need to outlive the universe to read that many books
@@johannvespucci1444 Honestly I'm hoping someone becomes intrigued by it enough to make a program that automatically randomly searches the library while keeping certain keywords in mind
@@johannvespucci1444 At least then you'd have something fully or even mostly autonomous so no one human would have to take on the burden of searching through the whole thing
Think about it this way, you could take secrets that only you and your friend know that would be highly illegal and communicate by sending the exact wall, shelf, volume etc. and who knows the government could already use this to disclose secrets by simply just sending the wall, shelf etc. it is truly mind blowing how you could actually use this
But can't every other random goon just use said info to look it up in the library. This is encoding, but the key is accessible for everybody. Very safe indeed.
A counting challenge for beginners: Create a library that contains all the possible variations for the text that is the length of the characters on all the pages in the current library combined. Once you get the number of total characters for that, repeat the process for TREE(g(64)) number of times.
When I first heard about this, I was wondering where all these 26 ^ 3000 pages are stored. Because if there are more pages than there are atoms in the observable universe, it is not possible to save all of this, because even if this is digital, hardware is needed to store it on it and this would then also be significantly larger than the observable universe . And that's why I believe that the pages are only calculated when you search for them. I wouldn't see this as a scam, because if it were really stored somewhere it would be in the same room on the same shelf in the same book and on the same page as when it was simulated. But I'm still very fascinated by it.
It’s not saved in the sense that it’s a file. It’s saved on the sense that it’s a mathematical calculation that never changes so every time u search soemtning it finds where it is in the calculation. They haven’t run this and like made a txt file with 26 to 3000 characters
I just heard about this less then an hour ago. The quantities are too huge for me to comprehend hence this question. In some way would you think that what you type in becomes immediately absorbed and thus shows up as being a part of that library? How can you search (without typing) and find something you have said before? I want to know more.
See it is a combination of alphabets and space and full stop and commas. So it is like there is combination of every word with other words what it does is ask you what you want to search and then it uses a program to search the string of words from its storage. So you can definitely find what you are looking for but it would be like finding needle in hay.
Great idea from you here, i can have a secret conversation with somebody on a facebook for example, where i can just exchange the coordinates for the specific page in the specific book, so nobody can understand whats going on if they break into my account.
As you did it i have seen it on Vsause too. It was so fuckin crazy that it fucked my brain off! Amazing thing. 10^5000 books, for example : amount of all atoms that exist int the universe is 10^80 ! That's even pretty much bigger than my country! (Russia) :D
😂ya it happens with me 😂 and I got my name many Times in book ... Even my Hindi's second chapter name is SMRITI which is my name 🤭 SMRITI means memory 😁
I think is a cool concept and a rather cool algorithm but this is merely a search engine of sentences and words. Is just a combination of all the letters in the alphabet that if you look for an specific sentence then obviously it would look for a combination of letters that match that sentence. Yes this does tells you everything you could ever say but it also have everything you will never say. Is just like a search engine when you look for something and that specific thing would show up. This is a cool concept but i find it kinda of useless in my opinion.
@@noodlegames804 You broke the Matrix!!! =O Regardless, its useless. You dont get any information out of it unless you put information into it. The info you put in, is the same info you get back, just randomly placed digitally. Its not magic. It has no purpose.
@@bear5016 I don't know about this website, but theoritically you CAN get information out of it without putting information back into it. You just have to search for a logical sentence for days over thousands of pages, which is not practical in any ways.
It’d be kind of cool if someone did this same thing but with music notes. And you could pick an instrument and hear any possible arrangement of notes within a given time.
No, it cannot be used to tell the future. While it will have information such as the exact method and date which you will die, it would also have countless others that would give you the wrong information. And without hindsight (having to actually die) it would be impossible to know which one is the correct information.
Brother this site is just making everybody fool. Because it's exact what you wrote. If it can say future then it must have to mention everything. Why only your search sentence was there.? And all the other words were like another language. It shows you because you wrote it in search bar. Thn website automatically write on random Page.
Finally some one who gets it. Try to search 100 different things, if it was real all the results would be scattered over all the different pages at random. I searched some dozen things and behold, every result was displayed in the middle of the page. That is statistically possible but highly unlikely.
So basically if you put an immortal dog in a typewriter and teach it to hit some keys and ask it to continue doing that in eternity on a span of time chances are dog can write the hamlet doing the same thing.

For those that are still confused with the concept;
Imagine writing a book where you list off every single word that can be formed using the latin alphabet. Where do you start? Well, one way you can start is by writing
A
B
C
D
... and so on until you reach Z, then you want to start writing words that contain 2 letters, so you restart the process and go
aa
ab
ac
... and so on until you write az, and then you write ba, bb, bc... and so on. Eventually, you're going to write actual english words. For example;
...
aq
ar
AS
AT
au
av
... and so on. The word "as" and "at" will eventually show up in your book, as will "of", "it", and every 2 letter word.
Eventually, you will reach zz. You will then begin to write 3 letter words, so you start by going
aaa
aab
aac
aad
... and so on. Just like how we find "as" and "at", eventually we will reach the combination of words that forms an actual word, such as
...
baa
bab
bac
BAD
bae
baf
So, now we start off with
a a
a b
a c
... eventually, we will get to things such as
aa a
ab a
ac a
... and eventually, things like
aaa aaaa
aab aaaa
aac aaaa
In this sequence, you will eventually find sentences such as
baa word
bab word
bac word
BAD WORD
bae word

This site blows my mind. Thanks for the video with the more basic explanation. It really helps me understand how crazy this is!!
For me the most amazing part is that the actual code for the page should be in the library with the special characters written out.
This is like saying, "Everything ever happened to you, or will happen, can be written with normal characters we use"

. . . because you put it in there when you searched for it. All the formula does is copy YOUR text into a page with random characters everywhere else.
Imagine finding the exact fate of the world and living life knowing everything that would happen.
Been on the site for a while now... And i still dont believe it
What do you mean
Yeah it is fake. Each sentence that you will type will appear on the center of the page every damn time.
Great parlor trick, library of babel.
Ok for everyone who is interested:
1) The library of Babel is a short story (about 7 pages) written by Jorge Luis Borges.
And the story is in the book

The best explanation of this, is the Banach-Tarski Paradox. More complex explanation but also shouts infinity.
That's a whole different thing though. It still touches the idea of infinity, but that's like saying "Harvard has a lot of smart students because their janitors are diligent".
Let me me explain this to you as simply as I can. This library is given the letters a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y x, and also a comma, a period, and a space. It takes those characters and finds every possible combination using those characters.

Can anybody dedicate their whole life in browsing every page so we can find something?
Okay, let's assume the guy takes an hour to read one 410 page book. There are approximately 10 with 1800300 zeros at the back according to the Spanish book. I did start to lose interest about half way through, but you were so enthusiastic about it, I wanted to watch until the end. :)
your future is written in this library
A counting challenge for beginners:
Create a library that contains all the possible variations for the text that is the length of the characters on all the pages in the current library combined.
Once you get the number of total characters for that, repeat the process for TREE(g(64)) number of times.
That is HUGE
Technically this has the cure of cancer in it somewhere, we just have to find it
When I first heard about this, I was wondering where all these 26 ^ 3000 pages are stored.
What I think is crazy is in there is everything I’ve said, will ever say, and will _never_ say
I just heard about this less then an hour ago. The quantities are too huge for me to comprehend hence this question. In some way would you think that what you type in becomes immediately absorbed and thus shows up as being a part of that library? How can you search (without typing) and find something you have said before? I want to know more.
Its possible to find it but, the way its impossible to comprend by a human being and probably every form of life in the universe
See it is a combination of alphabets and space and full stop and commas. So it is like there is combination of every word with other words what it does is ask you what you want to search and then it uses a program to search the string of words from its storage. So you can definitely find what you are looking for but it would be like finding needle in hay.
You can logically prove that the Library of Babel isn't just absorbing the things you are typing down, but it could take more than a lifetime
I don't know why you bothered directing people to Vsauce. You explained it in way more detail. Thanks.

I'm stupid. I have been watching videos trying to comprehend how this is a helpful tool and how it works.

No, it cannot be used to tell the future. While it will have information such as the exact method and date which you will die, it would also have countless others that would give you the wrong information. And without hindsight (having to actually die) it would be impossible to know which one is the correct information.
MrPr0phacy not impossible.. highly unlikely. But not impossible

Finally some one who gets it. Try to search 100 different things, if it was real all the results would be scattered over all the different pages at random. I searched some dozen things and behold, every result was displayed in the middle of the page. That is statistically possible but highly unlikely.
