To me, the most outstanding performance in the movie "Gone With The Wind" was that of Hattie McDaniel in the scene where she is expressing her concern about Rhett after the death of Bonnie to Melanie as they ascend the stairs. In a film with so many great performances, this one stands out as a truly classic scene. She certainly deserved the Oscar that she was awarded.

Thank God she waa able to enjoy many of the fruits of her labor as well as her public. Miss McDaniel was pure class. Look forward to seeing her in the presence of King Jesus. 🙏♥️✝️🇺🇸

Agreed! There was SOOO much more to her than maid & mammy roles-she was originally a gospel singer with one beautiful, powerful voice. I have always loved her, though she passed years before I was born. Monique showed the epitome of class, graciousness and respect for Ms. McDaniels when she paid tribute you her in her Oscar acceptance speech. Thank You, Hattie, for the pleasure you gave your fans over the years.

Hattie was such a confidence beautiful, happy, strong talented black woman.she definitely paved the way for other black starlets.she seemed like a good person and seem happy with a smile all the time like nothing bad was or would bring her down.her roles were funny I just seen on another video they even made a cartoon about her mammie maid rolls.there has to be a documentary about her somewhere if not that would be a shame.I think they should do a movie about her life that would be amazing and it would be good to I know she got a story to tell.I loved her smile, her personality and her beautiful silky chocolate skin it was so shiny and smooth made me want a chocolate candy bar lol lol.r.I.p Hattie

Hattie McDaniel was the foundation of the movie Gome with the Wind. She made me laugh and cry. I don't think I would have liked the movie without her. She made the movie click with her sternness, out spokeness, laughter, and her wonderful talent. She was a true artist.

In high school, me and a couple of friends had a GWTW club, more for the book than the movie, but as far as the movie went, we revered Miss McDaniel's performance. We used to say " Mist' Ashley come home to Atlanta and you be waiting for him jes like a spider."

You can never help but love this woman. She was the greatest. She had the most outstanding talent of those days. She was a brave strong woman who knew what she was doing. Although she always played maids, she was far too wonderful for anyone to hate. After all, she said so herself, "I would rather play maids than be one."
So beautiful and talented. God rest her soul.

I first saw GWTW in 1969 in a theater. The greatest scene in the movie is when "Mammy" (Hattie) is emploring Melanie to have Rhett bury his dead little daughter. At the end of that scene the audience appaluded Hattie who by that time had been dead for seventeen years. The performance was so powerful and moving we just had to. I know she was somewhere up in heaven smiling.

When Holly Berry won the Oscar she implied she was the first black women to win the Oscar, and everyone was "to the moon" about it. But the older generation knew that wasn't true and I thought was dishonest of her, as every black person knows Hattie McDaniels. Was Berry trying to make more of herself, and elevate her standing.

@jckfmsincty - I just finished reading her biography by Jill Watts, who said that although Selznick staff had reportedly written her a speech, she left it at the table and instead gave her own, composed with the help of her long-time publicist, Ruby Berkley Goodwin. Watts also wrote that McDaniel was the first African-American to attend the Academy Awards ceremony, and that she received a huge round of applause upon entering the Coconut Grove ballroom at the Ambassador Hotel.

@jckfmsincty You're right, but remember it was another time. As wrong as it was to treat her like that, at least it was a start. The studio and the Academy should be applauded for making that start and not denegrated. At the time Hattie was critisized by the NAACP for playing a maid. Her response was, "I'd rather play a maid than be one." The point is, let's remember the good surrounding the occassion of her winning the Oscar and put the bad behind us.

The sad part about it was. It was our own black males who did there best to try to destroy this woman to put a light skin woman in front of the camera. This man hated her so much until it put so much pressure on her and she got sick and passed. She said all she ever wanted to do was act and make people happy. And then she said why would he attack her like that and she didn't know him or did anything to him. It's our own who will try to destroy everything we worked for. Sad. Rest in peace legend

the photo of Hattie holding the Oscar statuette at 0:34 has been photoshopped. The full statuette's in the 40's only went to Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best actress. The other categories got the "plaque" which you can see her holding at 0:54 At some time in the Academy history, you were able to exchange your plaque for a full on statuette when it became common practice to hand out only statuettes.
