the evening after my highschool graduation, with too many ppl packed in my pickup truck, we blasted this song on the drive home and everyone sang and it was such a bittersweet moment of everyone singing joyfully together but knowing we are headed to different places. one of the most beautiful experiences of my life
When I listen to this, I can’t help but get a flashback of who I once was. I remember being bullied in junior high. It was bad. It ruined my relationship with my family because I was too humiliated to tell anyone what was going on..I was defeated and lived in the dark. Anyways, I live in a small town where there’s basically two high schools on opposing sides. Everyone from my junior high went to the same high school, but I secretly applied for the one across town. It’s a highly competitive academic school, and I got accepted. This song reminds me of the two hour journey to that high school every morning. The feeling of escapism on that highway. The slow return of peace and safety, the mending of my family relationships. My heart breaks for that little girl. But I’m glad I don’t know her so well anymore. To anyone who has reached the end of this, hello my friend :) A story is forever changed with the removal of a single word. So hold on tight. **sending you all virtual hugs**
Sorry, I know this is from a long time ago, but i saw it didn’t have any responses, and I wanted to say that I really appreciate your story. Means a lot to me, someone who went through something similar- sending hugs back to you!!!
this song reminds me of when my friends ben and charlie rode our bikes and we were happy it was just us and nothing could break what we had but not all stories have happy endings charlies dad overdosed ben moved far far away and i havent moved on i just hope when life is over i get to go back and do it again
+crissy4445 ... Just because someone thinks it feels a certain way doesn't mean they dont ALSO know what the song is about. Everyone can interpret and feel things differently.
+AwkwardTales I thought it was just because my cousin used it in a birthday video thingy she made for me a few years ago and my birthday is in July and it had a lot of clips and pictures of us taken in summer. But apparently it's not just because of that lol.
This song is so amazing it made me not give up when I was diagnosed with a terminal illness ..... Sometimes you just have too push on my friend no matter how small or big the obstacle is in the way ..... Thank you Florence you showed me a ray of light in a world full of darkness ❤❤❤ xxxxxx
This song is so empowering. As a man who's had his ups and downs following a relocation and new career venture, it's music like this that allows me to bounce right back up from some of the bumps along the way and keep my head high. Bravo!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I interpret this song as if there's one event or one person that gifts her true happiness. As she steps back and looks at her current situation, she realizes how unhappy she was. With the newfound happiness, she fuels herself to run and not turn back. The dog days are over. She can finally be happy :)
There’s no wrong or right way to interpret a song, that’s what great about art. It may not be what the artist herself intended, but there’s always more than one meaning.
I think this song just makes me feel hopeful and free! Happiness struck her like a bullet in the back"" meant to me that she hadn't been happy In such a long time that it felt burning and strange to her like a new beginning..
Dog days are a period of stagnation/sort of chilling not really doing anything in the summer. She’s said in interviews the phrase meant that the easy times are over and she has to start really working for happiness. In my opinion, it’s about leaving an abusive relationship/bad relationship you were delusional about. When she had doubts she ‘killed it with kisses’ and ‘sank with a drink’ so she wouldn’t have to deal with it. Now she’s gonna have to ‘leave all your love and your longing behind’ and get out of there. ‘Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back, struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that’ refers to the British phrase ‘Cupid hit her with a bullet.’ It basically means Cupid missed, Cupid got it wrong, you love the wrong person. Of course music is subjective and I might be totally wrong about these individual lines, but the phrase ‘dog days’ has always had connotations of being carefree and relaxed before this song. So I agree that it’s about getting perspective and running from unhappiness but I think it’s more focused on having to work for happiness rather than drinking away sadness
This song just makes me want to run away from the city ALONE, and into the country, where theres tall golden grass and the sun is setting a lovely pink in the sky. Theres nothing around me. Im all alone. Its peaceful. :)
I always got the sense that it was about a girl who came to an important realization and because of it made her happier and her days turned into good ones. I thought she shied away from it and finally decided that it time to put it into motion. :)
YouheiMiki I agree this song explains how i felt after I ended things with my abusive ex. After I made the realization our relationship was unhealthy and she was abusive I didn't want to be in that situation anymore. So although it was hard to do cause part of me still loved her I ended things which was hard cause she threatened to kill herself and cut herself each day I didnt get back together with her. But I realized that if she went through with it I wasn't to blame you can't force someone to be with you, that isn't how love works. So I stopped talking to her altogether and I dont regret it because it made me happier.
This is the BEST SONG EVER CREATED!!! I have loved this song since I was 5. I just love how it goes from a little calm to louder and louder and more intense I guess. This song makes me feel like I’m in a movie and I’m at a school dance and I’m dancing with my dream guy and we have our first kiss. That just me?
I used to listen to this song when I was younger, but I never knew what it meant. I just listened because it sounded nice. But now that I am older and can decipher the lyrics, this has become one of my favorite songs.
@@roxier6765 this song about a women getting out of an abusive relationship , thus why it says ,run fast for your mother , father ,sisters and brothers you can't carry it with u if u wanna survive ,it means, if you don't get out of the relationship for yourself, do it for your loved ones , and when it says happiness it hurt like a bullet in the back , happiness is the the abuser, he is physically hurting her , and the dead give away is when she says ,struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that .that's what the song is about .
I always liked to interpret the song as the "sad days" are over. I used to listen to it all the time when I was forming a very nice bond with someone, because happiness did hit me like a bullet in my back. But, the dog days aren't over. They never will be. It's always the same story.
For me, this beautifully expresses the intricacies of working through all the emotion of leaving an abusive alcoholic and acknowledging those emotions in hopes of releasing them. But I think she may also be talking about getting sober from the beginning lines and how abuse patterns can cycle generations and circles. In any event, acknowledge, feel, cope, heal, spreading as much love to yourself and others as you can
Everyone perceives this song so differently, it resonates with me with leaving an abusive lover behind. Finally running and having the courage to leave. No more controlling abuse. I’m free now
My mother in law who is only 42 is on life support in the hospital currently from liver failure...we are all devastated...but she had a horrible life and an abusive husband...she drank away her sorrow....so even though we are crushed we know she’s going to be much happier in the afterlife...I’m dedicating this song to her and I hope she will fly to a better place
hearing this song made me remember the teacher planned flash mob that happened at my school In third grade to this song. It started at an assembly with the vice principal walking out pretending to play a ukulele and before we knew it all the teachers got up and started dancing throwing candy and everything lol
Same thing happened to me except the music was being blasted from the announcements and the song was what does the fox say and the teachers marched in in minion costumes. (It sounds fake but it was real and I was fucking DONE)
The same principle marched in during another assembly wearing rain boots and she said (I’ve been trying to learn how to beat box and apparently all you need it boots and cats) and then they brought out the cats and started fucking beatboxing.
Some artists just manage to receive more air play, yet that doesn't make them the 'best'...only the most popular. Then again we all have our own opinions, and i can't argue that.
Oh. I apologise then, I thought that it was the reason. I do agree with you on how she's underrated compared to Adele, though. I also believe Marina and the Diamonds (another British singer) is underrated as well, but I don't want to go off topic.
Not off topic ...it's all about making music that we love! Yes her voice is beautiful and powerful. No need to apologize, however, I believe some of the most important contributions to music came from Britain. ..don't you agree?
lowkey this song is really surreal. like it makes me wanna get up and do something but its also really calming. this is one of those songs that you could listen to a million times and never get tired of it
dog days definition hottest days of summer when the dogs go mad and lethargic because of the heat or a period of stagnation, inactivity and decline so the dog days are over = the bad days are over! or summer is over but since it mentions happiness and not winter i'd go with the prior! the horse is a symbol of destruction or victory. impetuosity of desire, the instinctive impulses that motivate man.so victory desire and motivation is coming but she fears its her destruction
Brian Major Dog days are a period of stagnation/sort of chilling not really doing anything in the summer. Now she’s gonna have to ‘leave all your love and your longing behind’ and get out of there. The phrase ‘dog days’ has always had connotations of being carefree and relaxed before this song. ‘Dog days are over’ certainly isn’t a good or happy thing, and she’s said that herself in her very early career-before the newer music video was published but I couldn’t remember an exact year. I think it is about freedom from a bad situation, but more because her period of deluding herself and not having to deal with it is over and now she’s going to have to really work for true happiness, not just assume she has it
i listen to this song after every stressful thing is over like when i left my manipulative ex boyfriend and it’s made me feel free just listening it on full blast in a car with friends just yelling it at the top of our lungs. it makes you feel strong and like you can do anything. i love this song truly
The vocal harmony that is blended into the background at about 3:41 is one of my favorite selections of music. It sounds almost like a train of sound, with the melody weaving over the melodies beautifully.
So interesting how everyone has a different interpretation of this song! I was feeling pretty low from an ugly break up and now I'm finally happy. Now I love my own company, abundant with optimism and living my best life!
i listen to this song and it takes me back i’m crying and shaking i remember i used to listen to this song all the time as a child at my dance recitals and it makes me emotional who ever made this song i love u
I remember listening to this after secondary school had finished. I had such a difficult year facing extreme bullying, with the stress of exams which made me super anxious about school. When summer came I felt an immense weight had been lifted off when I listened to this. It just really reflected my emotions at the time like the actual ‘dog days’ were over and I was free of the pain.
This song alone, brought me the clarity I needed.. when not so long ago I felt stuck and confused. Stuck in situations that did not serve me, took away my power and left me drained. This song when I first heard it, brought me back from the dark place with tears of realization that I always had the strength to claim back my power and find my happiness. I will always credit this song that brought me back to life ❤️
Everytime I listen to this song I think of when she went to sing this to that young girl who was dying in hospice and she looked so free and happy when she was signing it to her. Her smile always made me think about her when I hear this song on my Playlist. Sometimes all it takes is one song to make all your problems go away even for a minute. R.i.p to that girl.
This song speaks to me on so many levels. takes me back to the moment I finally decided to get sober and go home to my daughter. Such a beautiful song. It means so much to me.
Okay, okay, whenever I hear this, I think of Annabeth from the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series. Especially the point when she returned to Percy, in the Mark of Athena. "Run fast for your mother, fast for your father, run fast for your children, sisters, and brother". She's felt like she needed to take responsibility for everything and everyone. She wants to please her mother, proving herself to her. Her whole life has been running, running from what it could be.
And also how returning the athena Parthenos would restore piece between Camp halfblood and camp Jupiter thus saving her siblings from attack and her potential children from being born into a war- And how she had to go into the tunnels alone- leaving Percy 'her love' behind- if he'd been with her, the quest wouldn't have counted (you can't carry it with you if you want to survive)
So she's running towards Arachne and towards peace for demigods, and she has to be quick, with the impending Gaia imposed deadline and the Camp Jupiter deadline coming at her fast.
I love this song. It's about a woman escaping from abuse. "Happiness" is used sarcastically to refer to her lover, the person who's supposed to bring her happiness. "Happiness hit her like a train on a track"... "like a bullet in the back". She hides from him and tries to diffuse his anger with kisses. She doesn't believe she can leave, though - "stock still, no turning back." This is common in survivors of abuse; they don't believe they can leave. Often they're controlled emotionally or financially by their abusers. She's told to run from the relationship - if not for herself, then for all the people who want or need her to survive.
See and I agree mostly, except for the happiness bit. I think it speaks to how one day you suddenly realize how different and better life is and it catches you off guard. It can sometimes feel like a betrayal to yourself because you don’t think you deserve happiness. Especially if she was abused.
In an abusive relationship you are not allowed to be happy. Happiness could have brought hey great pain but she also wanted to experience true happiness
"Why don't more people listen to stuff like this :(((" Cause people have different tastes in music good god every genres good in it's own way. You're just embarrassing yourself
Stick to your guns did a cover of this and it has a "harder" feel to it. In fact, an entire tribute album was made to Florence and the machine by rock/metal bands, in cae you're interested. Its called Florence and the Sphinx from Sumerian records.
i think this song is about self-sabotage she was unhappy but somehow comfortable. when the "dog days" (bad times) are over and she starts experiencing happiness she gets scared and wants to come back to her unhappy life. she's running away from the good life because it doesn't feel familiar. we all somehow kill our dreams.
exactly! that feeling of happiness that's so overwhelming and tiresome it makes you wish you could go back to normal uneventfulness and sadness florence is a genius
I interpret the song as the passage to heaven or the afterlife. it takes place after someone has had a hard and difficult life filled with despair and heartache. Its a happy sad song, because she talks about the way happiness hits you, in violent lethal ways, like getting hit by a train or falling from a great height or getting shot. It sudden, like death, after all the hurt and hiding in life death came for her. You have to leave everything behind because its only you leaving, and its sad because you also have to leave your family behind. I don’t I think its a sweet release she is talking about.
The beauty of this song is that it gives you the correct feeling that one is passing at this very moment! So it interprets into what ever is going in your life! Hope it helps!
This song is one of my favorites especially recently. In junior high I was in a toxic friendship. got out of it towards the end of eight grade. I went to a high school one of my friends was going to and didn't make any friends so I went to pur other school. I live in a small town so I had two choices. once I transferred I still didn't meet anyone till qurantine happened. I went back to the first school hoping for a change but it didnt happen. just recently I dropped out and let me say I feel so much happier.
This song feels so powerful. To me, the best way to describe this is the end of a story where the characters are headed to happy places but we’ll never see them again. This is the sound of a once absolutely powerful and community driven fandom sharing one final unifying moment before it begins to dwindle as the curtains close on the piece of media. This is what it feels like to be a character at the end of a story, going into your happily ever after. Like sure, you’re going to finally have a normal, happy life but the adventure is over. The curtains are closing. Your fandom is dwindling and you are being forgotten by those who once adored you. This is a powerful, bittersweet end. This is the most heart-wrenching finale possible. We are happy, but everything that made things worth while is gone. The adventure over, the fame lost. We are leaving everything, even the good, behind. And that’s why this is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Heard this for the 1st time today on the radio. I almost turned it over then it picked up tempo and i was hooked. Had to look up the lyrics to find it. In my playlist now.
the evening after my highschool graduation, with too many ppl packed in my pickup truck, we blasted this song on the drive home and everyone sang and it was such a bittersweet moment of everyone singing joyfully together but knowing we are headed to different places. one of the most beautiful experiences of my life

This song reminds me of the two hour journey to that high school every morning. The feeling of escapism on that highway. The slow return of peace and safety, the mending of my family relationships.
My heart breaks for that little girl. But I’m glad I don’t know her so well anymore.

Underrated in comparison to Adele. Much more voice range! Love her!

When she had doubts she ‘killed it with kisses’ and ‘sank with a drink’ so she wouldn’t have to deal with it. Now she’s gonna have to ‘leave all your love and your longing behind’ and get out of there. The phrase ‘dog days’ has always had connotations of being carefree and relaxed before this song. ‘Dog days are over’ certainly isn’t a good or happy thing, and she’s said that herself in her very early career-before the newer music video was published but I couldn’t remember an exact year. I think it is about freedom from a bad situation, but more because her period of deluding herself and not having to deal with it is over and now she’s going to have to really work for true happiness, not just assume she has it
Im so glad this song is making a comeback it has such a feel good vibe to it
This is art and music combined into something I just can´t stop listening to. Once again, thank you Florence.

i listen to this song after every stressful thing is over like when i left my manipulative ex boyfriend and it’s made me feel free just listening it on full blast in a car with friends just yelling it at the top of our lungs. it makes you feel strong and like you can do anything. i love this song truly
Such a freaking beautiful voice.
The vocal harmony that is blended into the background at about 3:41 is one of my favorite selections of music. It sounds almost like a train of sound, with the melody weaving over the melodies beautifully.
This song got me through some of the darkest times of my life. Glad to come back and appreciate the beauty that it is.
this is it. this is the song that will get me through 2020.

been listening to this for years, 2019♡
In my 20 years of existence, I finally found the name of the song.
Dog Days are Over!
2015 is going to be your year, Flo. Much love from Brazil!
This song makes me happy and it just makes me feel good about myself in a way I cant explain
Heard it on the radio, and ERMAHGERD IT BE MY JAMS!
Hey it’s been 6 years! What has happened in those years I know I’m a complete stranger but it’s crazy that it has been 6 years
This song alone, brought me the clarity I needed.. when not so long ago I felt stuck and confused.

This song give me a sense of happiness and relief like I can just get everything out. One of my favorite songs ever.
This song speaks to me on so many levels. takes me back to the moment I finally decided to get sober and go home to my daughter. Such a beautiful song. It means so much to me.
beautiful! hearing that gives the song more meaning to me
This song makes me wanna ditch school for life and run without worries
YES
Okay, okay, whenever I hear this, I think of Annabeth from the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series. Especially the point when she returned to Percy, in the Mark of Athena. "Run fast for your mother, fast for your father, run fast for your children, sisters, and brother". She's felt like she needed to take responsibility for everything and everyone. She wants to please her mother, proving herself to her. Her whole life has been running, running from what it could be.
I agree
And also how returning the athena Parthenos would restore piece between Camp halfblood and camp Jupiter thus saving her siblings from attack and her potential children from being born into a war-
And how she had to go into the tunnels alone- leaving Percy 'her love' behind- if he'd been with her, the quest wouldn't have counted (you can't carry it with you if you want to survive)
So she's running towards Arachne and towards peace for demigods, and she has to be quick, with the impending Gaia imposed deadline and the Camp Jupiter deadline coming at her fast.
You're so hecking Galaxy Brained this is *_brilliant_*
Its also from 6 years ago so odds are you arent on this account anymore and won't see this, so that kinda sucks
2019! Listening to this on repeat! My Sunday Anthem! Happy living everyone!
This is so obviously the correct meaning but people have some wild interpretations.
See and I agree mostly, except for the happiness bit. I think it speaks to how one day you suddenly realize how different and better life is and it catches you off guard. It can sometimes feel like a betrayal to yourself because you don’t think you deserve happiness. Especially if she was abused.
Yes! Just had this realization about an abusive relationship I was in and this song has so much more meaning to me now.
Elyse Yang best interpretation
In an abusive relationship you are not allowed to be happy. Happiness could have brought hey great pain but she also wanted to experience true happiness
"Why don't more people listen to stuff like this :((("
Cause people have different tastes in music good god every genres good in it's own way. You're just embarrassing yourself
omfg sing this in death metal and it's lyrics are brutal!
Stick to your guns did a cover of this and it has a "harder" feel to it. In fact, an entire tribute album was made to Florence and the machine by rock/metal bands, in cae you're interested. Its called Florence and the Sphinx from Sumerian records.
awesome, i'll check it out
I will be blasting this on the 21st of June.
I think I broke the replay button
No kidding. Don't get tired a' this one.
i think this song is about self-sabotage
she was unhappy but somehow comfortable. when the "dog days" (bad times) are over and she starts experiencing happiness she gets scared and wants to come back to her unhappy life. she's running away from the good life because it doesn't feel familiar. we all somehow kill our dreams.
Very profound and on point! Right on! Love this song!!❤💋❤
exactly! that feeling of happiness that's so overwhelming and tiresome it makes you wish you could go back to normal uneventfulness and sadness
florence is a genius
I interpret the song as the passage to heaven or the afterlife. it takes place after someone has had a hard and difficult life filled with despair and heartache. Its a happy sad song, because she talks about the way happiness hits you, in violent lethal ways, like getting hit by a train or falling from a great height or getting shot. It sudden, like death, after all the hurt and hiding in life death came for her. You have to leave everything behind because its only you leaving, and its sad because you also have to leave your family behind. I don’t I think its a sweet release she is talking about.
This song reminded me of my sister, and I had a wee cry. Thank u
The beauty of this song is that it gives you the correct feeling that one is passing at this very moment! So it interprets into what ever is going in your life! Hope it helps!
One of those rare positive songs.
This song just makes me want to fly over the world singing this
Omg I love this song so much, I listen to it and song it over and over again like a million jillion times! I ❤️ this song!!
I went back to the first school hoping for a change but it didnt happen. just recently I dropped out and let me say I feel so much happier.
not to sound mean but you dropped out because you had no friends?
such a good song
My favorite song
Hhhhhhh I love this song so much! X3

Of course

2018 and every year after that ;)
Ya caught me
Yes
still listening this in 2014
The beat of this song is so pumping and the lyrics are beautifully structured!
And that’s why this is one of the greatest songs ever written.
caroline pennell made me fall in love with this song
This song always brings my mood way up
Heard this for the 1st time today on the radio. I almost turned it over then it picked up tempo and i was hooked. Had to look up the lyrics to find it. In my playlist now.
