Hey, guys just a heads up about the Weekly Shonen Jump rankings. It's actually the order the series appear in each issue. For the most the popular series are towards the top and the less popular at the bottom, but it's not an absolute ranking.
The ones that had their number in red and yellow had the lead color page or just a color page in general. Most series get a color page every couple of chapters (popular series more frequently). Lead color pages most of the times goes to promote the respective series when something happens, like anime adaptation, anniversaries, new arcs or crucial moments in the current arc etc. New series always get the lead on their first chapter and also there are times they have group covers with every series and usually one piece gets the leading color page.
Ruri Dragon is at the bottom as it is a special case. It doesn't take the place of another series and will be in the magazine until it transitions to the online magazine.
A way to rank the popularity of each series is comparing the sales of the volumes. Most of the times you get a more clear picture as of what's popular at least in Japan. For instance Kagurabachi is selling really good, while its chapters are in the bottom half of the magazine.
As of my favourite series in the magazine right now is Undead Unluck, Sakamoto Days, but I also love series like Witch Watch and Policeman Chojo that are wholesome and hilarious. Disclaimer: Chojo is not wholesome, he's a menace to society and I love him for it.

A manhwa recommendation I have for you guys is Wild West Murim. It solves a bunch of issues you guys have with murim manhwas in particular. First off, it is set in the gold rush era of America but with Murim migrating towards it instead of the British, so while the same clans and sects still appear, it's a fresh setting for a Murim Manhwa. Second, the story takes heavy inspiration from the spaghetti western genre, so the stoty is also pretty refreshing for the genre. And lastly, thw artstyle is pretty distinct, more sketchy and rough than the usual manhwa, so it's also fresh to the eyes.

A manwha i recommend for you guys to read is The Ember Knight which is criminally underatted. Is is set in a fantasy world where the main character Najin is a knight apprentice but his goal is actually to achieve his revenge and is just using the Knights for that end. The main point that stands out about this series is that he is extremely weak but has to pretend to be the strongest amongst his peers due to circumstances. He is incapable of getting stronger which leads to the battles involving many creative strategies and mind games which the author excels at. It is set in the same universe as "The Epic of Gilgamesh" and it is in webtoon so it's extremely accessible. part 1 ended a few months ago and part 2 is going to start at the 18th of June. Spoilers below of the first few chapters by the webtoon description but I recommend reading it blind as it hooks you immediately from the first chapter. It currently has 146 chapters.
When Nagyunn’s twin brother, Najin, is murdered before his very eyes, he vows to avenge his brother’s death by assuming Najin’s identity. But although the two may look alike, when it comes to fighting, Nagyunn lacks the talent and skill his brother possessed. In order to successfully execute his plot for revenge, Nagyunn resolves to train himself to become the prodigious knight-in-training his brother once was. Will Nagyunn be able to keep his identity a secret before others begin to catch on to his act.

Undead Unluck is one of my favorites. Very underrated, but it has some of the best world building imo. The chemistry and romance between the two mcs are also great. Lots of plot twists as well.

I've been reading the Manhwa "Raising the Princess to Overcome Death". It gives a unique spin on the 'transmigrated into a game' genre by having the protagonist take the role of not just 1 but multiple different characters, all supposedly in the same world but in different countries and backgrounds. The story is also reminiscent of Re:Zero in that whenever the protag dies or fails to achieve the goal of making the FMC a princess, the current route immediately ends, and the protag is cycled into the next route, with some minor perks carried over. The multiple routes keeps things interesting as they all have vastly different backgrounds(eg beggar vs knight) and challenges to overcome, and each time the protag may choose a different approach.
If you're just looking for a power fantasy, then this definitely isn't the manhwa for you. The protag and FMC go through some pretty tragic ends in some of the routes (similar to re:zero)

Hearing _Green Green Greens_ get two thumbs down was devastating. It was the only sports manga I've been willing to stick through the whole way. The characters didn't feel like stock archetypes, and I was genuinely invested seeing its lead improve at the art of hitting a ball with a stick real far.

  • @photonfrost
    @photonfrost 4 месяца назад

Fool Night is my most recent serious read and it is by far one of my favorite reads to date. It's a dystopian drama that steadily evolves into a thriller, crime, mystery that dives into the ethics of a sci-fi medical procedure that turns humans into plants and the idea of sacrificing one life to save many. Highly recommend, it is a little graphic at times, but holy shit the art style delivers.

Here are some recommendations of slice of life-ish fantasy mangas/webtoons that I thought were pretty neat.
    1. God Bless the Mistaken
It's set in the modern world that's plagued with constant bugs or glitches where the story follows as the main characters navigate through daily life while dealing with these bugs. Its also from the author of Bloom Into You, though this manga doesn't have any yuri and such.
    2. Lumine(Webtoon)
Lumine, a werewolf, takes up the responsibility of becoming a witch's bodyguard. Its a fun slice of life, fantasy with some dark tones.
    3. Almark (relatively new)
Almark, a descendant of northen mercenaries, leaves behind his life as a mercenary to become a wizard in the south.

A manhwa recommendation I have is The Tyrant of the Tower Defense Game. It`s similar to Pick me Up, as in throwin in a game and having to survive, but it's more tower defense than tower climbing. There are waves of monsters that attack and the mc with his army has to defend a town against them. It's very good with one of the most emotional moments in manhwa I have ever seen and the characters are amazing!

  • @onetimeweeb

Sakamoto Days rocks, the artstyle is a bit simple but the choreography is top notch. Think it's the 2nd best manga in WSJ behind One Piece, just a top tier action series. There's a few decent manga in WSJ beyond that (I think UU, Akane-banashi, Roboco, Witch Watch, Kagurabachi are all decent-good imo) but I think those 2 are the only truly great manga in the magazine currently.
Pluto is a great series! Enjoyed it quite a bit, read it months ago.

I don't know what Peter and Sxarra are on with Eleceed, it's really good right now. I think it's just them entering it with the wrong expectations, wanting it to just be a gag manga when that's not what it is. That's like reading Sakamoto (the high school one not the assassin shop clerk) and expecting deep story.

The manga "rankings" is actually just table of contents. Basically what happens is that anyone that buys the magazine are tasked to vote for their 3 favorite series of the week and the one with the most votes gets higher placement.
However, editorial often meddles with it so its not really an accurate placement of the popularity of the series.
For example: kagurabachi get more engangement and outsells half of the series in the magazine but its always rank low for whatever reason. Meanwhile robocco doesn't really sell as well but still gets a higher placements. So I really wouldn't invest that much about these rankings.

new series i checked out in the last week:
"ntrevenge", baited by the title but this shit is so dumb. its a bout a kid who gets bullied and with the help of a demon to get revenge by stealing (kidnapping/mindbreaking) their girlfriends.
"i was sold at the lowest price in my class," another dumb isekai but this time with mechs and probably the densest mc to date.
"oswald the overman in the lesser planes of hell" is a neat webtoon about a stuffed rabbitman who dies and has to collect some bad sould to regain his life, decent comedy.
"using my cooking skills in murim world" slapstick cooking manwha is pretty funny.
"mirukarani ayashii futari" short from stories about two guys who look like thugs but are actually nice.
"it looks like my son has been reincarnated into another world" is about a mother who thinks her dead son has been isekaid and visits an otaku from her high school days to find a way to join her son. i havent read too much of it but seems good. feels jokey at the start but is actually kinda depressing knowing its about a mother going though grief.

Honestly not too big of a fan of how Jump handles its manga. I feel like a lot of the good series gets cut short whenever there's a slow start or it doesn't go viral. It just feels like the publisher is overly demanding of the authors to make really popular manga all the time and never really giving them time to breathe.

Idk maybe it's just me but this whole podcast was a half hour waste and it's becoming disappointing these past few episodes, sorry. I really like this podcast when it was more focus on just being weeb and nerdy but instead it just became a social random talk. This conversation about houses value already has me triggered. You live in one of the most expensive cities in the most expensive state. Move. People like you are the problem in those states and you don't even realize it. You guys make a looot of money go rent an expensive house and be acting like you didn't create that market. Then complain that it's too expensive to live there. Like bro you guys have the opportunity to move wherever you like and have a career there. But instead you stay in LA and cause issues for real people that can't move from the state and can't afford to live there.
