The Predator actually was the one that skinned the men in trees in the beginning, the Predators have a certain code of honor when it comes to dealing with their enemies no matter who they are. Weak enemies are skinned and left to rot while also used as a warning. Worthy opponents like Billy are made into trophies by taking the skull and spines which are then mounted on a wall or worn around their belts depending on what they want. Other worthy opponents like Dutch(Arnold) are fought one-on-one in hand-to-hand combat which is why the Predator takes off most of his weapons and mask off.

It will also prefer using wrist blades on something deemed worthy as well. Its more than likely how Billy was taken out. "Falconer" in the movie predators also preferred this method of hunting as well except with the super predators instead of two blades about the size of a Kabar they have 1 long blade about the size of a Katana

It also follows the 80's action movie trope of firing a ton of bullets in a direction to kill whatever the problem is at the time. The movie focuses on this the first third to half of the movie, then spends the rest of the film showing how useless their normal tactics are.

the shooting in all directions when they make contact is not a waste of bullets, in fact it is part of US infantry tactical doctrine. When a platoon is ambushed, they immediately lay down fire with whatever weapons they have available so that the ambushers have to hit the ground or run into a wall of lead. This takes the initiative from the ambushers and gives it to those who were ambushed and allows them to maneuver and counter-attack.

They also sometimes employ similar tactics when they’re occupying a position in which they know they’re surrounded - they’ll do a “Mad Minute” firing spree in all outward-facing directions at first light, with the aim being to flush out, injure or kill any enemy combatants that might have crept up during the night. Col. Hal Moore talks about doing it in “We We’re Soldiers Once, And Young.” It can be very effective when used right!

Cydonius1 It's still a waste of bullets - especially when you're alone behind enemy lines with no supplies. You cannot carry unlimited ammo and unlike in video games ammo clips and crates are not littered across the area.
The amount of ammunition they used in this scene alone easily exceeds what soldiers usually carry around.
Spreading bullets like this is more common in trench warfare and when defending fortified positions with a steady supply of more ammo. Soldiers usually carry 6-10 magazines with them which means no more than 200 or 300 bullets (depending on the type of magazines used - in training magazines usually hold 20 rounds while magazines used in actual warfare usually hold 30).

Fun random fact, infrared doesn't actually look anything like that, that is just one spectrum of visible light we mapped it to. Since our eyes can't process it, we have no idea how it would actually show up as for us, or how it shows up for creatures that do see the infrared spectrum. Closest to us would most likely be huge range of hues of red we can't process/differentiate between.
So the infrared view with greens, blues and such are just our way of representing those value differences with a mapping that highlight the differences to us most clearly, but we could have just as well chosen any other visible color range

IN many warrior cultures such as native American Indians and the predator it is considered a dishonor to kill prey that is wounded and weakened. it is a stain upon the honor of the Hunter and his honor to do so. by cutting his own chest Billy insulted the predator on purpose by taking the honor of drawing first blood in combat. Billy was the first to realize that they were being hunted by a hunter and knew he was going to die. he wanted to die facing his enemy with Honor rather than running away.

I think this is such a unique film for it's day. It starts out as a typical 80s war film 🎥 and half way through it changes genre into a horrific gore monster film who happens to also be an extraterrestrial!! Like, what?!!
Definitely different. But it was definitely a wrench in the machine because Arnold and his muscles 💪 always dominated in his action movies back in his day. It was certainly something different to have an adversary give him a run for his money.
One of the reasons why I believethis movie is such a cult classic to this day so many decades later is because they purposely don't answer a lot of questions on exactly who the Predator is. The less you know, the greater the intrigue. And the more mysterious, the greater the fear as well. Brilliant film making! -OG

And in the original novel the name used for the species was Reptilians, and they were described as 8-9 foot lizard humanoids. I suspect Hollywood made them change it for obvious reasons if you're familiar with the theory of how most of Hollywood, the world elites, and major politicians/world leaders being Reptilians in disguise. Even this military/jungle setting was inspired by a official military report that a US Army Rangers squad made running into a group of 3 Lizard Humanoid creatures in the jungle and they opened fire on them as the creatures quickly climbed and jumped from Tree Top to Tree Top as the bullets ricocheted off of their scary skin. They said in the report that even at that point the creatures completely ignore them almost like they didn't even know they were there, which they knew couldn't have been the case since they were shooting at them all the way up until they cloaked and vanished into the jungle. That was the official report for 24 hours before their superiors called them in and made them change it...

"tela quente" woud have comercials right? and the narrator would say "não desgruda dai" (dont unplug yourself is the closest translation that makes sense) as to say "hey, dont get out, the show will be back soon after the comercials".

He cut himself to draw first blood. In certain cultures, there is honor in drawing first blood in combat. By cutting himself, Billy denied the Predator that honor. Billy knew he stood no chance against it, so denying it the honor of first blood was as much as he could do.

The entire culture of the Predator species (called Yautja) is based on the hunt. They have RIDICULOUSLY long lifespans, (1,000 years, or more) are capable of withstanding huge amounts of punishment, and capable of tolerating various different types of harsh environments. Their species has been coming to Earth to hunt (as we learn in later movies) for many thousands of years.

That is one reason for the self destruct. There was nothing left of the predator or its tech left to study. Dutch in real life had a bomb that size gone off would have been as vaporized as the predator. It was not like a grenade or some IED, It was bigger than both Nukes used in WW2. If I remember correctly there is a line in the second movie "it destroyed enough rainforest to cover 300 city blocks, remarkable weaponry"

Hey Duaffy! Really enjoyed your reaction to Predator (1987) :D I also look forward and recommend the sequel in case it is on your list. Anyway, a little behind the scene trivia as to where the design of the Predator creature came into being, this excerpt is from the interview with Stan Winston who also designed the Terminator cyborg:
The inspiration for the Predator design came from a piece of artwork in Joel Silver’s office, a painting of an otherworldly Rastafarian warrior. “I saw that and I thought it was a great starting concept for the Predator,” Stan Winston said. “I started drawing and redesigning this alien character with quills that in silhouette would look like dreadlocks. During this same period of time, Aliens had come out, and James Cameron and I were flying to Japan to participate in a symposium about the movie. We were sitting next to each other on the plane, and I was sketching and drawing the Predator."
James suddenly said, ‘You know, I’ve always wanted to see something with mandibles.’ And I said, ‘Hmm, that’s an interesting idea.’ And I started drawing the now-famous mandibles of the Predator. So, between the Rastafarian painting in Joel Silver’s office and the mandible idea from James Cameron, I came up with ‘Stan Winston’s Predator’. And I take complete credit for it, even though I had nothing to do with it, obviously!”

Mythbusters did an episode about this to see if mud could really hide a thermal signature. It does but it only works for a few minutes, then your body heats up the mud and you'd be visible again. Dutch would have had to keep putting new mud on himself every few minutes to stay hidden.

My fun Predator movie facts: 1: the Predator and Optimus Prime share the same voice! They were both done by Peter Cullen. And 2: they used real thermal IR cameras for the Predator POV shots, but had to keep them refrigerated because the Mexican jungle was so hot. In fact, they had to spray down the jungle before shooting the footage to cool the leaves, because the foliage was almost the same temperature as a human body and people barely showed up against the background!

    GET TO DA CHOPPA!!!
MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE EVER!!
Facts you didn't know about the movie:
Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid.
He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused.
Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch, being 7'2".
Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the movie and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990.
Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Spielberg and Ford on Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. They couldn't eat any hot meals due to the heatwave in Mexico and had Protein bars instead.
The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts.
Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us."
It was 110° in the shade while it was 42° at night.
It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult.
The film was a box office success making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.
It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.
Its now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

It was based off of reptilians. In the original novel the name of the use for the species was reptilians and the character design was a 8 to 9 foot lizard humanoid. Even when they first started filming the movie when Jean-Claude Van Damme was still playing the predator, the costume he is giving to where was that of a lizard humanoid. I suspect Hollywood made them change it.

Have to say I echo much of what has been said here. The Predator - played by actor Kevin Peter Hall, a man nearly seven feet tall - is a hunter. His species hunts for sport. If you are armed in some way and perceived as a threat, you will be hunted, but you will be left alone of you are not a threat. Which is why Anna was not attacked. He has an invisible device that is able to bend light so he is effectively invisible. And he see's in infra-red and thermal imaging. And what you saw at the side was him mimicking voices. Then later as he got shot, he used his on-site repair kit to take care of his wounds. This is the first movie and it is regarded widely as a classic. I agree that you should watch the second Predator movie with Danny Glover who plays a great role in it too - and some wonderful humour! And then there is ALIEN vs PREDATOR which is also a great movie and you get to see exactly how the Predator works. This movie was a really good attempt to match the Predator against Ridley Scott's Aliens. Highly recommended the series. However - I understand that this just might not be your bag. All the best from the UK. Lee

    Duaffy,
Actually the Predator sees in THERMAL. Don't feel bad about saying Infrared, everyone mixes them up because someone long ago did it and so many people joined in. Infrared is what most think of as the black and white night vision. Regular, true, night vision is green.

    • @aneophyte1199
      @aneophyte1199 2 года назад

Infrared has a full spectrum of colors like visible light, perhaps even more so. It's our infrared conversion equipment that shows it in a monochrome display. You can get equipment that can map the different wavelength into separate colors, but it is very expensive, bulky, and doesn't lend to mass production. Same is true for night vision or light intensification. Maybe in the future the technology will get better and the price will come down.
