The Great Survivor | Hamid Karzai's days in Shimla |

At the Jaipur Literature Festival 2018, the former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, talked about his days in Shimla. His cousin was studying at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, and in the heat of July, he decided to take Karzai to Connaught Place. The fiercely summery day made him ask his cousin: “Is there another place in India that I can go to that will look like Kabul, that is a bit cooler?” and the answer was Shimla!
The decision was made and Karzai arrived in Shimla. “We straight [away] went from the railway station to the University”, said Karzai and further added that while walking among the langoor-filled trees and soaking in the breezy scent of rain, he thought to himself: “School or no school, I am not leaving this place!” And that’s how Karzai stayed in Shimla for 6 years - with memories unimaginable and with an impression that has still left a remarkable impact on his personality.
