- Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) was one of the most important French composers of the first part of the 20th century. His music is categorized by impressionistic harmonies and classical structures. His works are widely played by all sorts of musicians, and some of his most popular works include Gaspard de la Nuit, La Valse, String Quartet, Pavane pour une infante défunte, and Boléro.
This short piece was commissioned by Conservatoire de Paris for a sightreading part of the female piano contest in the conservatory. It was dedicated to Jeanne Leleu, who was one of the first prizes in the contest. It is a very short, yet charming piece. I think it is one of the pieces to throw at people saying that modern music is all dissonant and horrible. It is on the verge of dissonance in several places, yet it is not like dissonance in atonal music. Rather, it is like dissonances in older music such as Bach.
