Happens all the time, very few anime ( specially shonen, tho i would say snk is more on the seinen side, but the action is quite shonen like) protagonists are as liked as secondary ones. The only ones i can think off that i actually adore the main character as much as i do the secondary ones is gintama. And one piece, luffy is the only dumb kid anime protagonist i don't find insufferable and so i have adopted him as my fictional adoptive son. (Even if technically when i started watching op i was like 6 and luffy' character 17, but irrelevant, he is now my anime son 🤣🤣)
I like that the creators actually were realistic and kept his height short, not fitting the definition of a "handsome, tall man". This shows how he was malnutritioned in his childhood, and how he came out of it still handsome, proving some of society's standards wrong.
