    FINALLY !! a youtube channel where fish is cooked not only deliciously, but with respect for the fish. Soooo many people (badly) fillet the fish and throw the head and bones back into the sea.
    My grandfather taught me from a very young age - catch it well, dispatch it well, cook it well, eat it well.
    Thank you for a great channel.

      Thanks for the compliment! I (Fabio) grew up eating everything from the fish. Nothing went to waste. Sounds like you had a similar upbringing. You may enjoy this video where we make a pasta with the meat from a tuna head.

      Wonderful . I’m 1/2 Italian and grew up cooking with my grandmother and grandfather . Two simple thing tell you how authentic a pasta dish is before you even look at the ingredients . 1. Was water from the pasta used to enrich the source ? 2. Was the pasta added to the source for the last minute or so of cooking ?

    You’ve certainly found close to a tropical paradise there , Fresh fish and locally growing fruit and veg , topped up by the floating green grocers , I totally love the idea of the boat delivering your veggies . The plastic problem is alarming , even though we try to recycle as much as possible these days , I suspect much of the damage from discarded plastic is already done 😢. Thanks for sharing your adventures 😃🍻🍷

    Trash is a HUGE problem all around the world. I've traveled to Ghana, Africa's coast line and have watched locals throw bags of trash on the beach so the surf can pull it out to sea. Beachfront was treated little more than the local landfill. Very sad.

      You should see any of the water under a microscope, even if it looks so blue and clean, it’s full of tiny little pieces of all kinds of plastic. But you’re right, it’s so much worse in third world Countries or Countries without much infrastructure. I assume you went into the towns and saw the way they are living too, that’s even sadder & it’s understandable why there’s so much sickness and disease associated with no sewage treatment or system to speak of. Many of them realize & would gladly help if they had the knowledge & financing.

    Your best episode so far...... Re: Plastic waste: what amazes me is that the solution is not technology but actually pretty simple.... In many Nordic countries, you take your empty bottles back to the shop and they pay you a little for it which comes off your grocery bill..... imagine expanding this out a little to pay these people for the plastic they bring back.... and then expanding it a bit more to legislate the producers to force them to take the same amount of waste back as they produce... OF course they will not do it for free and ultimately the consumers will pay but that's not a bad thing to change our behaviour. I really don't believe that these complex cleanup machines are the answer other than a one off attempt to clean the ocean.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  2 года назад

      Thank you! That sounds like a great step in the right direction. The ocean cleanup machines are helpful to clean what’s already out there but aren’t a long term solution.

    In an off-topic question, I was wondering how many LPG tanks you have on board, and if you've had to keep a variety of them with different filling nozzles, for when you refill them.

    Hi Guys love your work, regarding the plastics problemI have been working on a solution by making a plastic granuliser that will mulch plastic into very small bit (stage 1) then you could use a solar furnace to heat and form into bricks that could be colected and use to recycle. I also have been thinking of things you could reopurpose the plastic like makeing fishing lures. I am sure there are many things that could be made that would be of value for indigenous communities, with the thought if you can make it of value it will be colected. There are several organisations doing this on a bigger scale. If you google you will find easily. Hope to meet you in the drink. Greg & Vicki (SV Aqualibrium)

    Wow, SO off grid! Scary to think that even though you can fish and catch food from the sea, you really do need others to help with more necessary foods that help mitigate scurvy and help keep you healthy. And the wonderful thing is that people everywhere are so keen to help and can make a good clean living helping others. Such symbiotic relationships everywhere. It's is great to see you supporting all these islanders, and taking care of their environment too! Congrats to you for doing that. If you could keep a small shredder on board you could compact all the wast down till you get to the next harbour or town and then recycle the plastics, But I understand that this is costly and would weight down the boat, so it's not practical. On the bright side there is now a move to clean up the plastics in the Pacific Ocean, so hopefully in a few years the amount of washed up plastics will reduce significantly.
    I'll keep you in my prayers and thoughts and I wish you sailing free of drama.

      @gbsailing9436 2 года назад

      @@HarborsUnknown I love watching your journey! Personally, I think that the problem starts with people. We have to acknowledge that 'our' behaviours need to change; stop throwing things away (out the windows of our cars, etc); find a bin or take your rubbish with you and not be so lazy as to just discard things we have used; and to pick up after others. It comes down to HAVING to change our attitudes towards plastic and rubbish in general. But you know this, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. But the world needs to get to know this, intimately...

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  2 года назад

      People definitely need to change those behaviors but we’ve been in a few countries now where there is no infrastructure for waste removal on a larger scale. So even if people put it in a bin it doesn’t get taken away and processed. It seems to be a very complicated issue.

    • @gbsailing9436
      @gbsailing9436 2 года назад

      @@HarborsUnknown Ah OK. I forgot that you had mentioned that. Seems to be a very large problem then. You would think that might give one of these large waste companies an opportunity to make a fortune and clean up (excuse the pun), quite literally!

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  2 года назад

      🤣🤣 yes it is a great opportunity for a large company to clean up and make a bundle.

  • @OllieW501
    @OllieW501 2 года назад

    The only way to combat that polution is to reward the collection of it.
    If a company is willing to setup recycling infrastructure in the area, and literally put at a call to arms saying they will reward for any plastics handed in to their "weighing centre", maybe even a boat that goes around. The locals would quickl;y find all the plastic and hand it in, and not throw it in the first place, just directly turn it in to this model.
    Not sure% what mechanism of recycling, and what the finances look like, but surely, if the raw materials already exist, it has to be cheaper than producing new plastics from oil, and if it isn't, it should be made so.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  2 года назад +1

      The people would definitely respond to an incentivized recycling. In fact our friend Tobias took the empty beer cans we had onboard to give them to his friend because they are able to sell them. I assume they’re being recycled. So if there was something like this for plastic bottles it would be great!

    Garbage is a huge problem, not just in remote islands but world wide. We cannot blame the companies who produce the packaging, the biggest problem are people and their shitty attitudes like the world owes them and they can do whatever they want. Land based garbage is even worse than ocean based garbage. Only by creating garbage awareness in marinas and harbours, can we hope to reduce ocean garbage.....enjoy your sailing adventures, wish I could afford a boat as well.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching our videos and for your comment. I agree with you, yes, people have the greatest responsibility and it is often surprising how our individual behavior can add up to create a large problem by little increments. Drop one candy wrapper on the ground and soon there will be a mountain of garbage. Unfortunately in some parts of the world lack of education and above all lack of infrastructures make it very difficult to change habits. Unlike Europe or the US, Panama has a very feeble garbage collection program, no garbage bins and nowhere to deposit your refuse. People get used to seeing trash on the ground and dropping the wrapper becomes a normalized behavior. It takes generations to change habits and to nudge humans in the right direction and we hope that government and industry may help with immediate countermeasures in the short term.
      In the output side, by setting up robust disposal and recycling program and on the input side by minimizing plastic and improving the biodegradability of packaging material. Thank you for your giving us the opportunity to start such a stimulating conversation.

  • @jkmorphs

    I watched this with my kids, and my 8 year old son said, "Papa, some of that trash could be ours."
    Recycling in Korea is rudimentary in my opinion, but far more advanced compared to the US. I'm glad he's thinking about the global impact of not recycling, plastic damage, etc. Thank you for including this in the video. 🙌
