Right! Like you said, sometimes I think about how we didn't even have conditioner as kids! It's wild to think about that now. But my hair was still always waist length or longer and full and healthy through pressing and later, relaxers. Fortunately it still is with my $6 shampoos and conditioners from the drugstore/grocery store . That's not very luxurious, but I'm hesitant to spend extra time and money on expensive protein treatments, deep conditioners, etc. because so many people seem to have bad experiences with them. I'll admit that I do find low porosity hair very interesting to see when I watch hair videos and the hair never really seems to get wet while it's being washed and looks like its already been dried right afterwards. It's like a magic trick! And to read/hear that the benefit of that is that it actually stays well moisturized for long periods of time just makes that even better.
I'm 43 and my hair has never been healthy or thick. Using only hair grease just dried my hair out and I got zero good advice from black cosmetologists. Because you have normal hair. Lol! The easiest hair type to take care of. Lol! I do not have normal hair, or normal scalp and it is a complete challenge to keep my hair healthy. My mom does nothing but put hair grease in her hair and wash once a month and it stays pristine. I would be in scalp pain and my hair would break off to bald in 4 weeks. My mom doesn't have any edges though and I have all my edges.
Thanks Narada. I think many of us bought into that way back in the day because we just didn't know Now, I cringe when I hear the terms protein sensitive or porosity. I've been natural for 8 months and along my journey of just trying to get informed on certain things I can say the whole porosity convo is draining as hell it's TO MUCH.! 😫 BUT GREAT ADVICE YOU ARE ONE of the VERY FEW I take seriously when looking for info on natural hair care ❤ you make it sooo much less complicated
The benefit I got from learning my hair porosity is that I found out why my hair always looked so dull so quickly after I styled my hair. Like you said, low porosity hair can get build up on it more easily. I was using too many products on my hair. I wouldn't have known that until I found videos explaining I didn't need all that stuff. Then I found your video on learning what my hair feels like with nothing in it.. just naked. Then you taught me to just keep it simple. Things have been great after that. I use water and argan oil after washing and conditioning. I use Camille Rose Honey Hydrate ONCE... and then after that I only use water and argan oil to moisturize when needed until my next wash day. So that's the benefit I got from the porosity conversation - but I didn't get hung up in the weeds with all the other stuff.
It probably wouldn’t have mattered much to me when I was younger and my hair was relaxed. But now that I went natural, got older & then colored my hair, while simultaneously also going through different health issues, and my hair thinned out a lot, it matters. It explains so much about why certain products never worked for me, & it was usually always the really thick products and/or the ones with silicones. They just sat on top of my hair without being absorbed and made it look dull like it needed washing. I also can’t layer products because they won’t work and just stay on my hair, weighing it down.
As a professional I completely feel you! I’m a licensed Nail Tech and your porosity education issue is pretty much the same as people wanting to argue with us about Dip powder, claiming that it’s not acrylic (it IS). It’s ridiculous.

While on my journey however, I still had to learn what worked for MY hair because there are low porosity girlies on RUclips that rave about products that my hair absolutely despises lol. With 20 years of trial and error, cutting my hair bald 3 times, and the introduction of products that were not available prior I've learned, My hair does not like: Silicones Shea Butter Coconut Oil Avocado Oil Direct Protein My hair loves: Deep Conditioning w/ Heat Leave- In Conditioning w/ Heat Quarterly Protein Treatments w/ Amino Acids Only Apricot Oil Sweet Almond Oil Granted, I wear my hair in protective styles or curly 98% of the time but, without the knowledge of porosity I know I would not be at this point. The only simple thing about their system is washing your hair every 7-10 days.

I was a nurse so I understand allergies well and wanted to protect your health. Thank you
Thank you for this video. Some folks over complicate things. A simple haircare routine is better and healthier for my hair. Over the years, I have wrecked my hair, following incorrect advice on some RUclips channels. Using all these different products, trying to get my hair to look like the woman in the photo.
