Just got my luxury sport edition a few weeks ago, 170,000kms with some aftermarket treats (coilovers, sports extractors). What an awesome car, so much fun to drive, going to be a treasure for some years yet. Took several months to hunt down a manual but well worth it.

Have a 2004 Sportcross, owned it for 4 years, now 90,000 miles. Power steering pump has been the only failure in that time. A very reliable, solid car. Engine is not particularly fast but is very smooth and purrs nicely. Only complaint is the manual gearbox is a bit close-ratio, I find 1st doesn't go far enough and generally changing gears too often. Also terrible fuel consumption on short journeys but what the hell, I knew that when I bought it. Fine on the motorway. Quality motor.

as a bmw 323i e46 owner with about 130k kms when i bought it, i can agree to what you said about them exploding... i have owned my bmw for about 2 years and driven about 40k kms and here were the issue i had before i got tired of fixing them and had it sold:
    -2 dead fuel pump.
    - coil packs died on me twice as well
    - expansion tank exploding on me 4 times leaving me stranded on the side of the road all 4 times,
    - thermostat not working 4 times and had them replaced which caused the engine to over heat and destroying my expansion tanks
    - sun roof stuck on open and we had to put an umbrella above it when it rained with it stuck open,
    - radiator leaked at about 140k kms. this was not the original bmw radiator as i was told by the previous owner. was supposedly replaced at 115k kms at bmw... doubt it since he said he did not have the receipt for it.
Don't get me wrong, i love driving it when it worked, but my god was it expensive to keep running. though im probably never buying another again

Don't let my comment decide for you. i recommend people give BMW a test drive as they are really fun to drive especially the e36 and e46 imo. You might just be lucky and get a really good running one which if you do, you would want stay with a bmw for the rest of your life because they are that much fun to drive. I was just really unlucky.

Right now I drive a BMW Z3. Dont get me wrong, it is a hell of a lot of fun to drive! But it gives me a lot of trouble too. Maybe if the previous owners looked after it a bit more it wont be such a pain in the arse. Its not only your comment but a common thing that BMW´s are not the most reliable cars...they even seem to be more on the unreliable side.... One of my main requirements on a car is reliability and since this is a Toyota in a Luxury shell and there are no real complaints about it (unlike the E36 or even other BMW´s) i just think it would really make sense to get a IS200...

130,000 miles , original radiator and hoses still in decent condition, I replaced the auto box at 122,000, I've put a new thermostat in and it's been properly serviced (although not in the dealers after the first 2), it's 18 years old , looks and drives like a new car. The best car I've ever owned by a country mile even if the fuel consumption isn't the best.

i got one lined up, 250k km, manual, sport trim level, and the cleanest 250k car i have ever seen. dealer's selling it with a full set of spare wheels and winter tires, and new summer tires, freshly serviced, for 5k. the odometer is kinda off putting, but the inside looks like new. i think i gotta go for it.

It's a Sport model with a LSD. .best one to have..in manual. .a car with less than 160bhp...riding on all round double wishbone. .backed up with..LSD & Traction control..very few cars can keep up with an IS on a twisty country road..it finished 4th behind a Supra and 2 Porsches in Targa Tasmania. ..a tough road race in Australia. .it's like Nurburgring on a Public road...the whole state is like that😂...

This is my all time favourite Japanese car, and I really wanted one soon, only if my insurance goes down as thats the problem in uk. But these cars are strong and reliable. Yes they have their own isses but there no car that dont have isses. But these are still modern looking cars even though they are 20 years old already first came in 1998 and last 2005, so that was quite modern for the 90s.

Hi i got an used one 2004 sitting at 165ks had a timing belt done 10ks ago however i can see the coolant pink crust residue on the water pump housing however the coolant should have been changed at the last few services with the belt. The car runs well i think it might have been having a few overdue services leaking valve cover and a bit of white smoke on morning start. Is it worth it to replace the waterpump and coolant soon or is there a sign to look out for when they start to go bad?
    Regards

How does the IS200 compare to the IS250 in terms of reliability? There are loads more used IS250's near me (UK) then IS200's, but I don't know if that's because they're even more reliable, or less desirable, or were just bought in larger numbers?
