This was the last piece I wrote during my time at SFCM. It was composed for the Composition Ensemble Project, formerly known as the Pierrot Ensemble Project, where students write pieces for the peculiar instrumentation of Arnold Schoenberg's landmark composition Pierrot Lunaire.
In keeping with the spirit of the project I chose to incorporate 12-tone Serialism into the fabric of the piece. The main recurring theme of the piece is derived from a tone-row I constructed. This tone row was inspired by the Britten War Requiem, which features very logical and singable 12-tone melodies. The 12-tone method stretched the staunch neo-romantic harmonic language I firmly established with my piano trio and brought my ear to new places I would have never dared to venture before.
This piece was written very quickly from start to finish without any pre-planning. The result is a rhapsodic journey filled with vivid colors and ever-changing textures from start to finish.
Enjoy!
What a joy to hear, if for no other reason the instruments sound so beautiful singly and in ensemble - due no douibt to wonderful musicianship and expert compositional craft. Even the recording is top notch with the Van Ness traffic providing a fresh and unique kind of counterpoint. Congrats to Prof David Conte also - an old collegaue of mine from our Paris days.
Thank you for your kind words!

Amazed by the tone row series. Recalling theory in 20th Century techniques is often humorous. Great job composing,
