Thank you for this tutorial on digging out dwarf spruce trees. Ii was able to do the entire job by myself. I put the tree in a large pot. It's about four feet tall. The whole job took me two hours. I am so happy!
Nurseries fail to do an important and simple thing to avoid losing trees to shock. They fail to flag the south side of the tree before they dig it up. If you flag the south side of the tree before you dig it up and are careful to keep that orientation when you plant it you will suffer a lot fewer deaths due to shock. ..
Hi @MrDavePed, I’m sorry for my naive question but what is consider to flag the south side of the tree? I have a little tree that sprouted from a pine cone and I want to transplant.
@@vmeza2331213 Every day the plant grows in its soil with the same orientation toward the sun. Rises in the morning and sets in the evening. Now suddenly change that orientation. Something plants in nature never ever have to deal with their whole lives in nearly all circumstances. It adds to the shock. If it is a very young plant it probably doesn't matter. Keeping the same orientation toward the sun reduces the shock of the transplant on a mature tree.
Very inspiring! Thank you! I want to remove my favorite moringa trees and Im trying not to spend money by asking some men to do the job. I wanna try doing it alone if possible
I've gotta a gumtree I believe it is( the leaf has 3 big points with 2 small points near the stem, total of 5 points) that is about 2 ft tall. I want to relocate it but need to know when to dig and how deep. I do not wanna kill this tree. I've worked so hard not to run over it with the lawnmower for the pass year or so. Any info would be awesome.
i need to do this to my weed plant. but i dont want to kill it. i live in chicago and ive been letting it grow all summer but its going to be cold in a couple of weeks so i want to finish growing inside.
I'm having difficulty digging up a laurel,it's next to a fence and not much room to manoeuvre. It seems like the roots are also much deeper than the conifer?any ideas
Lmao, try doing it that way on larger spruce. Gotta start from the top or at least midway point. It looks like shit. He is trying to teach people and is doing it wrong, thats the problem.
His legs weren't tangled, he was using them to keep the string out away from the tree and to keep from having it wind up tight around the trunk as he went.
@@pamelah6431 excellent answer, if you allow me to complement it, this method works for trees that are not. Trees with long tap rots are very likely to die if this is attempted on them.
Good job but you didn’t say how deep to replant it usually is level correct I like to go to a little lower and leave a gap so when you water water sits in there
Exactly the opposite of how to do it. Plant it a smidge high (1-2") to account for settling. Can mound soil up to the root ball and mulch from there. You absolutely don't want to plant too deep, and certainly not lower than the original soil level.

Burlap and all else not necessary if transplanting from one spot to a different spot in your yard/property. Where is he going? How far away? Looks very unnecessary to move a tree a small distance. Looks like a lot of work for very little return. And looks like a lot of mansplainin.

There aren't a lot of videos on this topic. Thanks! That was a perfectly made video. :)
Thanks for getting into it without a long ass introduction.
Where's the part about eating a box of candy first, like I did
I love the music at the end. Thanks for the nice concise video

Very interesting. I didn't know that. Thank for sharing information
Amazing! Just about to dig mine for moving.
This never would have occurred to me but makes immediate sense. Thank you!

Thank you thank you. I gotta do mine now while it's my shoulder height or it will be impossible.
Ok, I’m Canadian, so I have to ask. Where is the accent from where they say ‘ruts’ instead of ‘roots’?
thanks! a simple way of transplanting trees. also a cool and effective method of wrapping the root ball using the burlap.
I like how this video is less than 5 mins coz up’s have work to do. Thanks!
I literally blew a gasket when you're just stumbling around tying yourself into a knot with the rope.
I just can't.
2 facts missing that make this part relevant. what zone, and the season. Jacket says not a lot.....maybe also inquiry of fertilizer use, water etc. ty
thanks ! this is just what I have been looking for.
Great video! Nice and concise!
Is the burlap necessary for an transplant in the same day?
I would like to transplant a smoke tree, which lives in the desert and has extremely long roots. Any suggestions besides dig a huge hole? 😊

What about shovel selection? What if your soil is sandy and friable? What if your main roots are all long latterals?
Do a video on digging up a wider-than-high conifer.
The long nose shovel is what I’ve been missing! Trying to transplant some trees in an area I’m clearing and it has not been going well
A spade
How deep would the roots be on a 9' black hills spruce? Is this method do-able?
Thank you theres this gig for a 7 foot tree to be removed so this is the perfect video
Thank you. I am gonna dig em up a little tree now ok?
Awesome 👍 thanks for your efforts making this video
Great! You look pretty expert in moving!
How long can I keep a tree balled ? Should I be worried of the roots drying out ?
Do you know the answer?
I don't know much about plants yet, but for people with the same question, "transplant it asap" might be a good rule of thumb.
No Tap root on that tree? didnt see one being cut
Can you do this with any tree about the same size? I have a choke cherry I need moved.

What are rutts?
Can this be done for hibiscus

You got exactly the same problem I've got. Drinking my last coffee and I'm just gonna dig dig dig
Do blue spruce have tap roots
What will happen if we accidentally cut the root or the soil aroud the root split into 2?
Wonderful idea.. thanks
Quite funny how he is getting his legs tangled up in the string.
Why doesn't he just hold the ball of string in one hand?
Worcester Exchange. I was cringing watching him tie that tree. You need to start at the top to keep those branches clear out of the way
@@alamedalandscapeinc.5649 Still got the job done and not a lot of damage, if at all. What's the problem?

Nice. Simple. Effective.
did this break the main taproot??
Not all plants are tap-rooted.

What are ruts
We've got machines for that, you can make a rootball in 30 sec
What's a tree rut?
He meant root

Ruts...I've been saying it wrong
Hello, what kind of shovel did you use?
Use nursery spade. AM Leonard sells a nice assortment.

whats a rit?
Why the hell do people say "root" like that??? "rut"..
I have a 4 year Japanese persimmon tree that I want to move because I planted it too close to the house. Is it the same process?
Rath Man yes
When is the best time of year to transplant a tree or shrub?
Late Spring or late summer/early fall...
Kevin Byrne fall or spring before leaf out
My tree has big ass roots circling,
He pronounces root funny, must be Canadian.
I notice it lol it’s unique never heard it said that way
Nope. Canadians do not say ‘ruts’.
how the Hell does the "oo" become an "uh" sound? it's roots dude

That is not the case here. This is no yard but a plantation, those trees are very likely for sale.
Good
NOW WITH ALL THAT SOIL WE NEED A CRANE TO LIFT IT UP
Why do people making these videos always pronounce roots as "ruts"?
Bill Kendich it's regional. It's says he's working class.
Sean Brown nope. Working class say roots. Gotta be another reason.
😎👍
wtf is a ruts....
This will not work in the wilderness don't try it lol
Those things have not roots so wtf
Did you steal this tree out the national forest?
terrible job
What the F are rits?
I think he said ‘ruts’.
