I love that, even now, in every big crowd scene there’s always a Lady Bug in there somewhere. Really gives you the feeling that the town is alive and has its own things going on outside of the Smith’s shenanigans.

I think both of those instances would count as central female characters, not side characters (even though a lot, if not all of Roger’s personas are side characters in their own right, him being central himself kinda discounts them).

Over the past few days, I've watched a lot of clips from Family Guy and American Dad. When I was younger, I thought FG was a much better show. However, at this point, I think AD has surpassed it significantly. And, after watching so many clips basically side by side, I think I understand why.
There's a lot more consistency in the personalities of the American Dad characters. After all these years, The Smiths are still the Smiths. I feel like Klaus may have gotten out of hand from the character he once was. Beyond him though, they and all of their other commonly appearing characters have remained on brand.
With Family Guy on the other hand, there is no longer any consistency in the personalities of any of the characters. The only remaining consistency with the characters in that show is that they're all hypocritical pieces of garbage.

After season 3 they steered away from “The War in Iraq” / w. Bush / Muslim “Terror*st” jokes, and Linda being love with Francine isn’t funny enough. Plus the wives of Seth MacFarlane’s shows have a hard time with female friendships.

If you think about it, Linda was the only central Lesbian character in Seth's shows that actually something of a recurring role for a time (albeit supporting.) They could've explored her character. After all, they did plenty with Herbert.
