I really like that you mentioned working WITHIN this thing's limitations. I was on a set where one of these was brought out specifically for a crowd shot with an A cam that was WAY too hefty for it. Thankfully, we had a pre-rig day, and they were able to get something more suitable in. DoP REALLY didn't want to use a b-cam. I still shudder to imagine a less experienced crew trying to go outside of this thing's pay-grade with the hopes that it'll hold out for just long enough. Really cool tool and idea, though! Hopefully, it stays in the hands of people who will respect it.
A true crane will always have an equal and opposite moment arm, i.e. a couple that sums to zero at the pivot. The fact that the counterweights do not keep the crane in equilibrium when the camera end is extended shows that the counter-extension has not been thought-out correctly; you should not need to add or remove weights when you've balanced out the crane.
I wonder if it's the motor and it's battery or something that throws it off. On the long end, the the camera extends off the furthest point and nothing is mounted anywhere else on the arm, on the short end the weights and controller extend off the furthest point. For it to change from being back heavy to front heavy during extension, either something on the long end would need to be extending quicker, or something on the rear end would need to be extending slower - which is what makes me think the motor and battery may be the issue as it's not mounted to the weight bar and so will extend less. Adding a lighter weight on the long end a little closer to the pivot than the mid point would probably allow it to be balanced such that it could maintain equilibrium throughout extension.
did yall try to get a dolly track to a push in rather than using the mechanical option in the crane? would look smoother and wont have to worry about the bumps from the mechanical push in
Thank you fornyour public service announcement about this project. Too many times folks see products that they think they need and this proves i dont, well not this product. I think the better alternative was the eldkrone crane you did a while backs. Looking forward to seeing ehat 2024 has in-store!!
I've worked worked with these, they can be really amazing and really up your production value. Just watch your weight and make sure your screws are tight... Threre;s literally *one* holding it all together. I put a Red on this once and was shaking in my AC boots the whole time.
Awesome video! I share your concern about the entire payload being on one screw, it definitely isn’t safe with no backup like that. I’ll wait on buying it until it’s safer. 🫶 ☮️ 🎥🎞️
Once upon a time I was looking for a tech review about mirrorless camera. Happily found your channel and still watching all of you, just for the happiness and energy of your videos. Even I m done with my equipment I m curious of evolution of gear. Waiting for arri to give you more new sheet to do. One love
Just so ya know, on the RS3, if you use the focus knob from the rs2 you can use both the alpha wheels or the Nodo inertia wheels to control the gimbal.
I did a very similar setup on my last feature with an RS3 Pro on the end of an old 12 foot jib (non-telescopic). Sent picture with a Mars 400 and motion-controlled the gimbal with my phone. Also: @12:45
So I've been looking at this for 4 years. I had their 24 ft jib and it worked but it wasn't everything I needed but I've gotten great shots with it. I agree with your review.. But at 10:50 you point out the difference I think you could build a cage (sppedrails and some gobo heads)around the back and operate from the cage like the techno crane and it would potentially fix that problem with the operator needing to step back as he extends the crane. Great review tho
About 2 decades ago I invested in a Steadicam Merlin. I used it 3 times. But, I would love to invest in this in 2024 and use it AT LEAST 4 times. As BEER VLOGGERS this can be very useful. Most people don’t have technocranr clones to have fun with beer. But, fingers crossed we can have this is 2024/25. But , more likely we will wait for the Hover Air x10 in 2034 and have a self flying , pocketable AI drone do all the shooting and editing . Drinking is hard enough work. Anyhow , sweetie and I love your videos. And we also hope you start doing more in your personal channel again. - Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed 🛏️ & Beer🍺 Vloggers ]
This thing seems useless. Almost all of the shots were wobbly. And that one attachment point for real looks sketchy. But great video as always sir, happy new year to you, your family and your crew!
That's because the crane never stays in equilibrium when extended; a pi$$ poor design, as, when balanced to equilibrium, the counterweight should always exert an equal and opposite moment at the pivot; the fact that this isn't happening shows that the moment arms are different as the crane extends.
I had a proaim shoulderrig about ten years ago, maybe their quality improved, but in general was not happy with the quality, especially of fasteners and screws
I got a funny story. On Lone Ranger towards the last half of filming the higherups wanted my department, locations, to give up budget that we needed to pay property owners and such to the camera department. They had a technocrane on a full custom off road vehicle and came with a crew of 5. In the last four weeks of shooting it was never used once. The total weekly cost for this unused equipment was 300k. I made 14 and hour. FML
For smaller, table-top stuff, I feel like a cinebot would do a more accurate job for half the cost of a technocrane (ok, and 10x the cost of this thing haha!)
Most of the shots in the video are wobbling around, even with digital stabilization you're going to see the parallax changing from the translation of the camera. I just don't see how this could be worth the price unless you absolutely need adjustable shots 10+ feet in the air for long periods of time AND don't have the money for a better option.
I have two 12 ft solid crane arm. Works great. And I use it to help extend out to 21 ft. With the tripod that can hold the weight. But what you have seems untrustworthy. But cool
Interesting take on Proaim scissor crane haha It is indeed wobbly and far cry from real technocrane, but great tool for the price. It's not for slow and precise shots, but for some organic moves, it's good. I have a question tho, what parts did you use to separate battery from DJI RS3 gimbal?
@@RAN480L64 You know... except for all of the translation sway and non-consistent motion paths. You can clearly see that the image is wobbling around in most shots because of the inconsistent counterbalance.
@@RAN480L64 What a weird bunch of assumptions to make that have absolutely nothing to do with your original reply. Strawmen don't help your argument. Nothing about those shots make it look specifically like a crane, half of them COULD have been a drone and the other half look like someone holding a gimbal above their head. The whole point of a crane is to be more stable and repeatable than either of those options, why do you think unwanted translation is the desired effect of a crane?
Iv'e used a proaim jib for over a year but had to take it out of service due to creaking on set. I agree, anyone thinking of operating proaim equipment over people/audience.. dont.. the stuff is so unsafe 😂
13:23 it does seem really suspect that part of one bolt would be the only attachment point... did he say if replacing the bolt with something of known quality would make it any less janky?
Sam, hate to break it to you homes, gear in Mexico is sometimes double or triple what it is in the US. It’s a mix of taxes/lack of suppliers making prices insane… so even the Mexican technocrane would run you a kidney and a LA mortgage down payment.

Always a good day when a new Potato Jet video hits the airwaves! 😊
True.. i miss their everyday vlog..
the only youtube channel which makes videos I am fully immersed in. thanks for the entertainment and see yall in 2024

It potentially is user error.
I'd like to get hands on this but don't have time or need right now.
Seems to me a PERSON holding a camera/gimbal, could get 90 percent of the shots your guys tried?
@@Bill-NM Yep, most of these shots could have been achieved with the same level of quality by just having a person hold a gimbal above their head...
Many you can hang a ronin 4d at the end so you don’t get that up and down wobble

Dude, my DJI Osmo pocket 3 on the 3 meter insta360 selfie stick and my GF operating via the MIMO App can achieve this as well. Pretty wild. 😎
and it looks better
You're videos are the best, because it's like a podcast with random guests, slash review video, slash tutorial, slash just fun and entertaining vlog.

The intro mockumentary slaps! 🔥
Didn’t expect to see our House of FPV RS3 control module on this video! That was a nice surprise 😊

I use this jib at weddings and i also find the centerscrew very risky. So i replace it every year just to be ‘safe’
I wonder why they didn't use a fatter thicker bolt?
Can everybody just share this video so Gene can get to 1million as a late Christmas present 🎁

That piece of gear really cost an arm and a leg didn't it... 😏

Gene out here doing dolly grip work.
Cool piece of equipment that looks super sketch!
Now I want a technocrane embroidered patch with the tagline “it’s the ultimate selfie stick”

It's all cool but what am I missing? Those very close up, barely moving shots, can be achieved with a gimbal, right?

I feel like you could 3-D print a carrier for weights that you could attach to the top of that

There is a new version, twice the capacity and price, sj30....has a Mitchell mount base so that at least is a move in the right direction!

The screw definatrly works but it may not work indefinaely, better to overbuild when life safety is a factor.
We gotta get this guy to 1 million subs
right now I limit myself to a pocket 3 and a go pro... takes up almost no space in my camera bag
To get more consistent balance, don't put the weights at the very end, put somewhat near the end; I would estimate around 75% towards the end.
Awesome work
So basically taking extra steps and paying extra money to get shots that look kinda like handheld gimbal shots or like gimbal on a readyrig

This thing is awesome.
5k more till 1 million subs!
Had a techno crane on one of my recent projects.. loved it🥹
Well done video 👍
See you next year!
Dude's be saying hell yeah
Would be good for live events or broadcast.
"Sometimes the manual helps" The person who did the manual 🙃
Almost to 1 mil!!!!!!!
Dude! I saw this on B&H! But was to chicken when I saw no reviews lol.
So funny. I thought about building something like that today xd
Almost I million 🎉
2024, de year of a million man;-)
Yeah, Super Random INC
Awesome.
I think you can counter balance it better if you move mounting point one scissor forward. 🤔
I don't think that's the issue, once balanced out the moment arms from the camera and counterweight should always be equal and opposite; this is how _any_ counterweighted crane works.
Gosh, I want it!!!
I love it
Sorry you can use master wheels with the RS3 pro, but not the DJI Ronin 2 controller??how does that make sense 😂
Awesome!!!
yeah
nice accessories for my new iPhone
15:21 nice camera A spotted. Review incoming? :D
huh.....its all about the Technocrane.
The counter-weight moves back as the camera moves forward - so why is your balance not working out as the camera moves forward/back?
it's DJi!
Yes, proaim, most budget heavt duty camera equipment.
"Sometimes" manual helps 😅😅
If you don't have a Techno Crane, don' even shoot! lol
now put a mini libra or L8 on the end !
happy new year
So close to 1million sub
Let’s hit 1M on the new year
Don't small rig do a v mount adapter for that gimbal ?
Its janky, good for jib shots but the actualy telescoping shots are not usseable because it will bounce up and down
DJI R2 remote can work with RS3Pro
you guys sound like minions opening new toys
