It's time to choose a melee class for Legion, but which is best? It's not all about the numbers; we separate them into categories to find out who's best at what in 7.0.3 You will definitely disagree, but that's half the fun :)

Survival here, raided in mythic HFC and got cutting edge, and and planning to go into mythic raiding as survival.
This spec is quite complicated, but is extremely rewarding if you can get that window of 6 stack mongoose bite + the talonclaw spear ability. Your single target is very powerful, Your AOE is actually quite good, but is quite difficult to get the ramp up to it's full potential, and has long cooldowns. You can have up to 4 Dots, 5 if you take serpent sting.
The best part about survival is that should something happen in a raid that knocks you out of melee range, you can still throw axes and grenades which are part of your normal rotation and are 40 yd range, as well as having a pet that sticks onto bosses.
Overall I really enjoy the spec. Lots of decisions to make, and you FEEL like a hunter. You're given all these tools to deal damage which feel like you're a swiss army knife. MM feels like complete shit, you throw snakes at people, it marks them, then you shoot a marked shot huh? Survival, you rip people's arms off with a spear, have a pet, set up traps, throw axes, cause people to bleed with a harpoon that you stuck in their gut, and here's a grenade in your face.

Survivals got good aoe and strong single target but ironically no survivability it'll definitely fit into raids and dungeons but Pvp wise it will be very skill-capped.

See, I feel differently right now. I think it has tons of survivability. If you spec to rely on raptor strike (instead of Axes) you get quite a bit of self healing, stronger self healing and your rotation requires you to use the self healing to keep dps up. They also are mail so phys damage will punish them less than rogue/monk/DH just in that regard. Sure, their 30% heal button is a pretty long CD vs the rogue's what... 15 second CD? They also have aspect of the turtle which needs clarification of use, because sometimes it reduces damage and sometimes you're immune to the damage. So it'll be a lot of figuring out if a raid ability you're immune to or you reduce the damage of.
Also, if you're having issues with health, you can ALSO do feign death and camouflage to regain health. You may not see a lot of opportunity to do this in a raid setting though.
And they have pretty high mobility

There's other aspects than just movement speed, and another good aspect to note is how easy can they move with damage. If you've noticed with other classes, like you can colossal strike with arms warrior but if the enemy moves too far away before the animation takes effect it'll not go off and refund you the cd even though it went on GCD. Surv doesn't have this problem. Also, you don't need to stay in to finish a rotation, you can leave for some form of raid mechanic and go right back in without it messing up your damage which has been a problem for some melee classes. The only reason I could see it being hindered is once you're past a haste threshold (because haste affects mastery more than mastery does) and you're getting too many resources that even standing on boss you can't blow through all your flanking strikes/mongoose before you keep getting more of them. i have a feeling the mastery is going to be changed because I see this causing them to cap damage pretty early forcing them to try to get crit and vers as anymore haste/mastery past that threshold would be near useless.
Also, harpoon is massively great for mobility speed. With a fight with adds and you constantly resetting it and with posthaste, you can use it to get that DoT (Which you should be doing) and then get posthaste up rather often so you should be hardly a point where you don't have a big burst of speed option.
+dragames I've tried a ton of different builds but none can really assure survival I've tried raptor strike for more heals but it's only 30% of the damage dealt and raptor strike isn't strong only hits 25k-50k for crits which is only 15k heals which on a 1800k player is less than 1% heals plus if u do use it to heal cuz maybe I'm missing something that sacrificing a lot of damage which for me my best defense usually is my offense. Idk it's definitely strong but imo it can't assure survival. If we get focused where kinda fucked as most ppl are reactive not proactive on defense
+b3dl3 yeah mastery needs to change should be a passive like 15% chance of pet resetting mongoose bite or something like that mastery should be based around mongoose or to increase attack power or something in that nature it feels like our mastery is Based around RNG which is what blizzard says they tried to steer away from but ig bad habits linger
agreed on unholy. ive mained a shaman every xpac since vanilla, and now im maining an unholy dk. the class is incredibly fun and very satisfying. im also pretty satisfied with my damage output considering ive only been playing the class for like 2 weeks. by the way, your vids are awesome. you have a great sense of humor and it rly adds to your videos. keep it up!

My Frost DK is still, imho, an absolutely brilliant experience in pvp.
Wow DK's are so weak now. I play frost DK as my main and he is very very average at best!
You just need to get better. I main a frost DK and they are decent if you know how to play them. Maybe not so much on raid bosses though.
DK's are below average in this expansion! That is an absolute fact, almost every other toon can kill them 1 on 1, almost everyone toon in the game can except warriors and priests etc etc

Well I'm not very well geared but often come top DPS in dungeons and in the top 5 DPS in LFR even with terrible gear.
I am able to hold my own in PvP also. Death Knights will never be 'top' in DPS or PvP, because that position has always belonged to the most faceroll spam classes such as Hunters.
I think the reason you guys are so dam awesome, is that you kinda read our minds. I assume you've been youtube watchers for about as long as anyone here has been :D And you know what the viewer will think when they watch the vid (the boil example is clear here). outlaw will definitely be in majority of progression raids as well as world/server first races. All of Serenity's rogues have already said they are going straight Outlaw for when Mythic comes out.

i stopped playing my Rogue and switched to DK. I never played it before and Unholy is so much fun right now.

Honestly ashbringer has a really outdated look and I seriously can´t stand the classic look of it. It pretty neat lore-wise though.

Actually one of the main reasons I resubbed was because I loved the idea of survival hunters. After maxing out I can say I'm going to maining it this expansion. The burst is insane and they do crazy numbers on the single target fights. Even during add heavy fights you can put out some decent numbers. I think where they struggle right now and where they could use some love is they do have some random periods where they do nothing for a good 3 seconds. You'll be flowing nicely and keeping all your bleeds up and then suddenly you're waiting for more charges of mongoose bite, waiting for explosive trap, waiting for your bleed cd, heck you even spent your focus on raptor strike or flanking strike. it's really jarring when it happens, even if it doesn't affect your dps too much.
Just get haste, you'll get too many mongoose bites than you'll know what to do with.
Actually, I'm kind of worried about that. I'm thinking with too much haste, you'll have too much to do. you'll have too many mongooses, and too many returns on flanking strike, you won't ever be able to use up all resources... so I'm having a feeling their damage is going to cap pretty early based on secondaries, unless they change their mastery to do something else because right now haste does what mastery does, but does it better.

I think I'm the only survival hunter main in existence, but it's amazing once you learn the rotation and the rotation is never boring! the amount of burst and utility it brings and it's ability to handle solo content is amazing!

It seems like the video is comparing the classes before Legion was out, so no artifact weapons which buffs arms warrior a lot more then it does fury.
It only got nerfed by 10%.. So it's still pretty good, imo.
Hárbinger a humble, main spec Survival Hunter here. I love it, I have been waiting forever for Hunter's to melee again,(we had a taste of it in classic WoW ). The beginning bust rotation is satisfying and I know it's a bit rocky at first. If you stay with it long enough to find your groove, well, fun can be had. :D

its different and quite competitive in my opinion, mobility and damage is quite high i think survival will come into its own when people see it potential
blizzard still have some improvement to do on this spec, like explosive trap not triggering on some bosses for example
Survival is now what I wanted out of Beastmastery; fighting side-by-side with your precious pet. As such, I've now picked my hunter back up since Cataclysm and I'm loving it.

Ending my first day of Legion with my 106 Frost DK. Having an absolute blast with it, frost has always had my favorite playstyle, and the constant proc-managing rotation keeps me pleasantly busy when playing.
Add to that their amazing class-fantasy, and the even more amazing class quests Legion has to offer and I'm more than satisfied. It's been a good first day in Legion for me :P
Enhancement is the best AoE Dmg dealer LOL, its actualy the worst, i got 844 ilvl and every other calss do 100 -300% more AoE ist so fucking embarrissing

The never ending problem with Shamans I guess ... they feel fun but the dps is shit, not to begin with PvP survivability..
It was ridiculous with the flame shock spread and fire nova spam. It may have legitimately been top dog at that point. As of now crashed lightning is super fucking flashy and satisfying to use but it does a pitiful amount of dmg compared to a lot of classes it seems like. I don't give a shit personally if I'll never top the meters. It's so much fun and such a spectacle to play. I daresay that in some ways it's flashier than demon hunters specifically when you get a lot of procs going.

I've been leveling arms and it's very good. I'm going twice as fast as my spriest because the aoe is so strong and it's just a lot of fun. Single target boss fights can be rough rarely but on the same hand every once and a while I'll string together lucky procs and crits and absolutely crush a fight. Also..... Bladestorm lol
Arms deals much more damage than Fury, Warswords of Valarjar have really useless traits.
Arms is currently one of the strongest DPS specs in the game at the moment, so yeah. But that's only if you use the Focused Rage build, which is a little more difficult than the average melee playstyle.
Not one of them, they are #1 single target dps - i pull 300-400k dps on single target bosses with 841 ilvl.
This has to be the most dapper WoW channel in existence.
I feel that unholy dk and enhance shaman is the only fun dps specs in legion. Everything else feels bland to me

Really liked the video man. I pretty much agree with every single choice too. I've had a brief venture on each to have a check and they all seem okay at least. Which is great news! You asked about Survival, I felt that it was either stupidly fun (for about 30seconds) then I was bored. I'd start a boss fight all hyped to do dmg then I realised I was a hunter stood next to a boss and felt like an utter titbag.

I'm going to try maining an SV hunter, I've been playing it throughout the pre-patch and I'm currently level 92 with the artifact ability unlocked. Impressions:
+Looks like it will have very strong single target DPS.
+AoE damage is good if you spec into Dragonsfire Grenade and it's cooled (30 sec cd). Serpent Sting will be better if AoE encounters last 15 seconds or more, but so far most mobs get burst down faster than that.
+The spec does significantly more damage after unlocking the artifact ability.
-AoE mechanics are such that we're relying pretty heavily on the tanks making clean pulls and grouping things together. SV has nothing comparable to barrage (hits practically everything on the screen no matter where it is) and requires enemies to be tightly grouped before dropping AoE cooldowns.
-AoE cooldowns are LONG. 30 second Dragonsfire Grenade, 45 second Fury of the Eagle (artifact ability), 30 second Explosive Trap which can be reduced to 12 seconds depending on how you spec your talents and artifact. There is also Carve spam which has no cooldown (similar to warrior's Whirlwind, but only hits things in front of us), but it drains focus fast and requires the corresponding artifact trait to be worth using in most situations. The Butchery talent seems worthless. Too much single target DPS is lost and it's only good for AoE pulls where things get burst down super fast, otherwise its also a loss in AoE dps.
-Pet has to be nearby in order to use Flanking Strike, which can lead to awkward situations where the ability cannot be used. Flanking Strike does more damage if either you or your pet are being attacked by whatever it is you have targeted, which is a great mechanic for soloing, and pretty good for PvP, but will be worthless in a raid environment.
TLDR, SV is looking like it will have great single target DPS, but AoE is a bit iffy. The biggest problem this spec has is that unless it can pull some top tier dps, most raid guilds will want Marksmanship hunters instead to help fill out ranged slots and do "just make the hunter do it" raid mechanics.

As a hunter main who's been playing survival as well, I feel its worth mentioning the dot based build is a perfectly good alternative to playing around mongoose bite windows
The funny thing is, I mained a Fury warrior, and normally really liked that spec since back in WotLK. Even though you said it is the favorite of many, I personally do not like the current playstyle, I am just not able to get my head around it. So I tried a death knight during the pre-patch and REALLY liked it so I boosted it to 100 and main that now. Especially for solo play and questing the DK is just so convenient. The self heal is awesome, the AoE is relatively straightforward and even the utility out of combat is nice with death gate and the portal to dalaran.
And holy shit the artifacts. Not only is Apocalypse really cool looking, but you also get Frostmourne (more or less) which is even cooler.
Hands down, you and Evitel have the very best WoW videos out there. Always positive, happy and upbeat. Such a nice breath of fresh air for those of us who actually love this game with a passion. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ;) Have a great day. :)
I'm still paying and maiming survival. It has grenades. It had a 5 yards melee range and it has harpoon (it's also strong in m+ as it doesn't rely on CDs so you can out full damage into every fight.)

Nice video. Currently main a BM hunter and loving the versatility of being able to solo bosses as well as provide good DPS for my group. But then I tried the first few Legion quests with my rogue up until finding my hall, and oh man. I might actually consider switching. Rogues seem to be fun again, and I love the new bleed mechanic!
Impossible to get angry comments on the ranking when the video is so funny and well edited, then again, this is the internet... Also, I like the Shaman a lot, played resto/ele for a long time and never have been too much of a melee person, but enhancement is soooooo tempting right now!!

Plus I like that you do not rank the classes "classicly" in best and worst (well you kinda do in a sneaky way) but in different categories, and I have to say you actually are pretty spot on (for me at least)!
I actually intend to main the survival spec on my hunter (I main rogue in general but the hunter is intriguing).
Especially now when like every class is basically "press these 3 buttons to kill stuff" (I'm especially looking at you Beast Mastery Hunters), the survival hunter has at least a little bit of a challenging "rotation"/priority chain that is not that easy to master.
Sadly for now I don't think that survival can actually out dps marksmanship and for melees there are better choices I think, but still its ton of fun to bite like a Mongoose!
Also I fricken love playing melees, especially with all the fancy new animations.
I play Survival in Legion. I am a huge melee fan, and although I will play just about anything, I do have a tendency to gravitate towards melee.
When I was leveling my hunter, I originally level him as Beast Master. I loved that spec. Once I started in Legion, I decided to work on Survival... I was intrigued, and like I said I love melee.
Survival Hunter does not disappoint. I find it to be so much fun, and I may never look back. Survival has now become my default choice for Hunter. Really, it is a fun spec to play. I may never play another hunter spec again.
The one thing I love about your videos vs other videos out there is your positivity. It's refreshing amongst PC/MMO players and channels. Keep it up!

I play survival and I simply find it fun, and the animations are impactful. The rotation itself is fun and I like in PvP 2v2 arena being able to trap a lower priority Target and Nuke the higher one.
You can also slow your enemy by more or less 90 percent if you use your abilities right. The dots are good too
I used to despise the subtlety spec, back in MoP and WoD. But like the mistweaver spec for the monks, I grew to love it.

I play survival hunter. When I started WoD near to the end of the expansion, news about the survival hunter leaked. It seemed appealing to me so I mained a hunter for WoD and now I main my hunter for Legion.
The negative cirque of survival hunter made me level up a windwalker monk, a demon hunter, a rogue and a enhancement shaman since they are so well received. I played a good chunk with them in legion. 1 whole quest area with both but they didn't satisfy me. So I returned to the hunter and I am certain now that this is the class i am gonna main for legion. It is the most fun to play for me.
The class fantasy tailors to my tastes very well. Not to flashy, not to boring and with a nice pet at my side. I have some ranged options with throwing axes, traps and a grenade. The rotation did feel clunky at the beginning. But I got used to it very quickly and it feels very natural and smooth at this point. Getting the stacks up and properly managing the cooldowns feels very rewarding even though the actual skills don't interact with each other a lot. The spec has a bit RNG involved as the pet can generate charges of mongoose bite. If that happens in rapid succession, I can save a cooldown which feels pretty good. Unfortunately, trash mobs and even rare mobs while questing don't live long enough to get a full stacked combo of Fury of the Eagle which is a shame.
Anyhow, from what I have seen, Survival hunter was the most enjoyable of them all for me so it's gonna be what I am sticking to.

As always, thanks so much for giving a good amount of emphasis on what is fun to play and why. I'm a pretty casual player, don't PVP and don't raid seriously, so I'm always looking for information that helps me just... enjoy the limited amount of time I have to play WOW these days.
i LOVE the windwalkers they,re fun and acrobatics and the combos with whirling dragon punch and the chi management with power strikes it feels so logical, almost mathematical, it's like a sustain of small bursts and then you can go to town on the monsters by popping your spirits and touch of karma and then pop a healing brew it's just SO MUCH FUN right now. I know the numbers may not be the highest but I have to say ww is my 2nd favorite spec in legion after balance druids
Survival Hunter feels like what Arms Warrior should feel like... with the addition of traps and a pet :D

I've been playing a bit of survival on my hunter and I honestly love it! It's a little bit RNG at times and pretty annoying when you don't get many mongoose bites proc, but when you get a whole stack of six you feel like a badass. It makes me feel like Samurai Jack from back in the day! ;D
Surv main here ^^, its super fun and a+ for solo as well as boss fights, and can put out good aoe with the artifact ability burst
I currently am planning on maining survival. The class can be an absolutely whirlwind at times. I find the pve tolerable, but I think survival has the possibility to kick massive ass in arenas due to its ridiculous burst and fiddly-but-possibly-OP crowd control. Plus harpooning a kiting Mage that just used both their ports and ice block might be the most satisfying thing in the game.
It is a proc class, which I typically don't like, but with proper gear it can absolutely SMASH a burst window.

I've been absolutely loving Survival Hunter actually, and more often than not I'm topping the DPS chart as well. The only thing that irks me is that the Artifact ability is on global cooldown, and I fuck it up sometimes at the end of the Mongoose Fury timer and use it completely unbuffed. That's a real killjoy.
Other than that, Survival is a blast. Caltrops being straight bleed damage to ignore armor is fantastic, it's constantly my 3rd highest damage dealer.
Love looking back on this for enhance and how it's kinda come full circle, 7.2.5 we will be the kings of aoe
