Don't try to cut the tape, sand through it. I learn something new every time I watch you. I love bringing old stuff back to life, but you make it an art form. Well done.
yup, sanding works way better than cutting for intricate shapes... Proper old skool painter taught me that many moons ago. Thank you very much for your kind comment :)
@Andrew Underwood No doubt about it, he’s definetly mastered the art of restoring old and mistreated mechanical beauties back to the way they should be. It sure takes someone with complete confidence in their work, you make it look easy my friend. Bravo!
How lucky is the owner of this amazing bike, to have all this incredible work documented in such a way. Untold skills. Love the old Duc's. more please!
@@RRCRestoration Hey , I do restorations on Ducati Singles, got a 160 Monza going right now.. it's a 66' , ..and a 450 mach 3 , and a 350 diana motor, and another 350 motor rebuild(think it's out of a 69' scrambler) , and a narrow case 250 cafe........jeez, i'd better get back to work..lol oh and a complete Bimota KB2 , you would digg the frame on that thing..we even have a 748 in the shop.. would digg trading some pics.. had to cut a hole in my monza tank to knock out a dent..
Always a pleasure and pick up tips everytime. I have seen people putting fuel tanks in a cement mixer to rotate. Everytime my GC8 project falls behind I look back on your project to kick me up the bum. Nearly there.
I have a '68 that my step-father gave to me. He was the original owner and was able to give me the original title and other paperwork. It is a future restoration project that I am looking forward to. Seeing your work here is inspiring and educational. Fortunately, since I don't have the equipment or booth, mine won't require painting as it is entirely chrome. Should be a lot of polishing.
Right now you are my Discovery Channel. I binge watched most of your channel and now I've got to wait for new episodes. Great work, fantastic workmanship and grateful that you're sharing this with the world.
Great vid. When I was working a guy asked me to weld a leaking tank, i flatly refused I said that I would rather buy you a new tank than risk welding it.
Absolutely gorgeous! I could watch you all day Mate! Something about watching someone that knows what they’re doing that peaks the interest! 👍🍻 Starting a 1984 GPZ 900r tomorrow with a buddy, you’ve inspired us to do it the best way we can. Thank you very much!!
I dont think there are any better restoration guys for painting than yourself or mymechanics, you both do the most top notch work. My mechanics with hand painted details with a brush, and yourself with absolutely peeeerfect masking and all the perfect final touches like perfectly placed decals. I could watch you tape up and put stickers on for days mate!
Absolutely gorgeous finish, dude! One cracking tank! I know loads of people have already said the same but I would love to see a full-on restoration of this beautiful little bike! Take it easy, Andy 🤘
Now I know that it's an old timer motorcycle fuel tank that needs improvement. It was easily mistaken for old glazed ham at first. Was our eyes deceiving us?
Very nice indeed. I have never seen a 160 Monza before, only the 250. Interesting that these old Ducati's have right hand gear change, just like the British bikes of the time. A school chum of mine got a 200 Elite for his 16th birthday back in 1963. Most of us were lucky to get an ex-GPO Bantam!
Learned something watching your paint prep. Quick spray with black or some color when wet sanding, this way you know you got all the areas evenly. Awesome tip.
@@RRCRestoration Already watched it. Great job Sir. If I ever make it out to the Isle of Man TT I may have to stop by Scotland to shake your hand. Take care and keep up the good work!
You did a really great job on this tank and great on 'how to' with a reasonable amount of skills, I have a good area to work reasonably well kitted out mechanically but not for paint, I have a circa 64, 200 elite along with a few other little interesting Italian bikes in need of full restoration. I look forward to you going into the motor. Thanks.
Great job, just one thing as signmaker . If you do vynil like that. All layers at once on decal , you end up with air pockets. You must carefully place those decals to let air escape or just you do it in layers. Than air cant build up behind golden background. Everything else is superb skill and will. Keep up good work we will be here to support! :)
Thank you for the tip, ill be sure to remember that for the future as i always end up with trapped air under big decals, these weren't bad as they are small but thanks for the info it'll defo come in handy.
Something very odd just happened. When I clicked on your community link for this video, it was already indicating that I was 22 minutes into watching it, yet in fact I wasn’t even aware of it until now!!! The red progress line showed that the video was 3/4 played. The only other device connected to this account is my iMac which is switched off, so I have no idea how that could be possible. First time this has happened. Thank you for sharing your restriction of this tank. Such a sweet little bike - which I always thought of as toys when I was a lad.
RRC Restoration Thank you for clarifying that. I was wondering if my desktop had been hacked by a random bike restoration fan…! 🧐 Your work is not just good, it’s top drawer. But you know that. I’m 63 and I learn something from every video. One of my favourite hobbies is catching guys out making a mistake and not admitting it, getting something wrong, passing on duff info, or just being lazy. Why? Because I like to learn from other’s mistakes (they’re cheaper), and therefore spend less time calling myself a T*wat in the workshop. But I’m delighted to report that I’m yet to catch you out in a single error or deficiency. I was wondering if the tank colour was a match for the Ducati original, but it looked great anyway. Painting is my least favourite job, so I’m paying particular attention because am determined to get the process right. ‘It’s all in the prep’ has never been a truer piece of advice. Thank you for generously sharing your skills. It’s much appreciated.
Definitely did not expect a reply on that comment! Really appreciate how much you engage with the community! Keep up the great work, I'm really loving all the motorcycle content!
In a period of my life I owned this bike, mine was with a metallized gray tank ..... I remember it had excellent acceleration and good speed ... good times
22:17 - Nice technique of coating the top surface with black paint before sanding. I'd have never thought of doing that to find out if I've sanded enough. I've learned loads of techniques from your videos. Thanks so much for posting them.
I've just discovered your channel and subbed. Looking forward to a binge watch later today. There's something about Ducati singles of this era that I love.
TIP: I found a stack of old commercial-sized baking sheets and use them for prep, drip, etc, trays...great for putting under stripping projects, under a brake caliper still attached you're cleaning, etc....3' x 2' approx...if you can find a few they're excellent for many many things.
I got excited at the end, got so drawn in forgot it was only part 1 and thought we were gonna get to see the mechanical work as well 😂 such a tease you are!!

Awesome! Thank you! :)

I absolutely love the styling of the older motorcycles and this is one of them, love to see it finished
You and me both! :)
The 'square style' singles weren't generally considered one of Ducati's better looking efforts, but it is a nice clean design.

A giant ham would be a very cool paint job for a bbq enthusiast!
your paint finishes are on another level ..... absolutely stunning, cant wait to see it back on the bike

You’re videos are the best restoration and repairs on RUclips,, looking forward to seeing more
"This isn't a restoration!" It will be when your friend sees that tank, and realizes that the whole bike needs to match 😆
Yeah it need to be a restoration
that gas tank @ 8:16 looked like a baked ham!
The ham thumbnail was perfect lol
amazing hand job man .... you make it an art form... i love what you do

Yes!!! An example of the Ducatis I knew and loved.
From one painter to another. Nice job brother. 😊

Unbelievable work.

Your work is always awesome. Wish I had a tenth of your skill!
The final 5 coats of 2-pack clear coat - how marvellous.
That is what separates the professional from the DIYer.
Bellisimo! Of course, now the owner will feel the rest of the bike pales in comparison and will want a full restore. I see what you're doing!
mwahaha yup you've guessed what my plan was, as soon as he sees the tank it'll make him want the rest of the bike done ;)
Now…this is a man that knows his stuff! Great work as always pal 👍🏻
Thanks 👍

something about sandblasting is so soothing & satisfying, I can sandblast all day
Perfect restoration, as always!
Sanding through the masking tape is a trick I have never seen before. Very nice move.

And still the old pillar drill is relegated... 😉 Lovely job on that tank, makes the rest of it look like it needs TLC, glad you're doing that.
You sir have excellent taste in motorcycles 👌

Haha thats my fear, once the tank goes on the rest of the bike is going to look quite worn but it is what it is lol
