But we all know each character is actually more than that. Monica is traumatized by her parents, overcame obesity, worked hard to become a respected chef, and is loving and nurturing in a way that the other characters are not. She is the "mom" of the group. She makes their holiday meals, does the decorating, and comforts others when they are down. "Shrieking control freak" is only a small part of Monica's character. They all have multiple dimensions.

I never got into that one (I was a General Hospital fan, back when it was really well written.. like poetry..).. so I can't remember her name, but she was huge. Although, for the record, you SHOULD assume everyone is heterosexual until given reason to believe otherwise, because you should always assume the most likely scenario in any given situation by default. Assumptions are not a bad thing by nature. If someone is late, you SHOULD assume they have a good reason, if someone is crying, you SHOULD assume something is wrong, and if someone is talking about romance, you SHOULD assume they are heterosexual if they haven't given an indication in either direction, because that's significantly more likely than any other outcome. Even in the United States, the country with by far the highest rate of homosexuality compared to most others, more than 75% of the population identifies as heterosexual, thus validating said assumption. I think it shows how much growth Chandler has gone through to have enough confidence to not automatically feel slighted Monica starts freaking out she won’t experience the firsts with someone else again, or resolve to jealousy tendencies like another character has done lol. It probably just further motivates him to not just be grateful he doesn’t have that anxiety again, but at least will give him motivation to keep the relationship he has with Monica fresh.

I can't, I just can't with that Joey losing the award scene. Before I watched Friends for the first time, I always thought actors were so polite to each other. I was like: please, someone make a scene or something, make this interesting. And when I saw this, I swear I laughed like ten minutes non-stop. To this day, it still makes me laugh so much!

Although after finding one article that said that Union was the first black actor on the show, I must point out that no, "Friends" actually had TONS of black actors on the show. It's just that none of them were main characters or love interests (aside from 2 cases, of course). While the core cast was white, the show overall is more diverse than people give it credit for.

But yeah, regardless of whether the six Friends are all white, you can't deny the obvious chemistry they all had with one another. If you had to choose one of the actors to switch out with a black one, who would you pick? The answer would be NONE of them, it simply wouldn't be "Friends" without the six actors that were chosen, they were all perfectly cast. As for Gabrielle Union, from the little I've been able to find, it seemed she received condescending behavior from the director or whoever, treating her like an amateur when she was already an established actress. Also, I saw a post by somebody saying that "Ross and Joey went from fighting over her to fighting over a monkey," which isn't what happened. Joey only brought up the monkey to make Ross look bad to Gabrielle's character. Some people are just determined to take things out of context.

The "Soapie" is just kind of like a magazine award - like a Soap Opera Digest award. They aren't necessarily for acting. They're kind of like just for most popular character. That's the way I took it. There used to be a bunch of soap opera awards back when there were a lot of soaps still on the air here in the US. They were huge in the 80s and early 90s.

Exactly. I'm surprised Oscar didn't realize that. Like does he forget Chandler hasn't been able to get one thing over Monica this entire time? Sure, you can say that they came to a compromise but in that one episode where he didn't want to spend all his savings on the weddings he relented in the end, so Monica either way. If Monica told Chandler about the deal, same thing would have happened. Chandler would have given it up for Monica again.

We have an award here in SA called a Soapy, named after this episode. I've got one. Got more excited about it than other, more important awards, just coz of Friends.
Even now $100 is a lot to spend on a date. At least here in the midwest. You can get a fantastic dine in meal for 2 people for $40-50 where I live. Spending twice that, even if you went to see a movie before the dinner AND went bowling after you'd still not spend $100 where I live. $100 on a date is crazy talk in my world lol.

Good observation about Rachel. But that’s due to Jennifer Aniston’s acting. She’s pretty much perfect in later seasons. She also became the most famous around this time and after Friends. I think, by the season 10, you can tell who kept working on their craft and got even better, who still did a decent job, and who kind of just relied on their talent but didn’t work very hard anymore. It’s just my opinion, I’ll just say that Jennifer and David were on top of their games.
Has anyone else ever noticed that the dress that Monica is fighting over in the shop is not the same one that they have her wearing in both of those scenes? The one from the shop had what looked like thicker beaded shoulder straps, while the one she's wearing in both scenes is a lot plainer and doesn't have the added detail.
Don't quote me on this but a little fun fact that I heard is that the actress playing the woman who Monica was fighting over the wedding dress is Jennifer Aniston's (Rachel) friend and her pointing at her and going "HEY" was a little nod to that. It honestly kinda sucks the woman won in the end. Like she manipulated and got her way. I guess in the end though there's no real harm other than Monica having to find another dress.
I love Episode 17. Part of me wishes Chandler knew about the dress fiasco, but I love that Monica chose Chandler's band over their wedding dress, and actively avoided letting Chandler feel guilty for that. I feel like the typical romantic dispute storyline in fiction has the man give something up for the woman, and Monica made sure that didn't happen here. A truly selfless act of love. And the plot between Ross and Joey is just great comedy. As for Episode 18, I like that it explores this very male-stereotyped crisis through Monica. In its early seasons, the show would often point out the traditional differences between men and women and joke about them (without criticising). By this point though, I think the show has moved on from that, or at least its approach has become a little more nuanced. You still get some of that traditional 'men versus women' commentary, but the show is conscious enough of it to explore alternatives (20:18).
I am Rachel. I have ABBBBBBBBSOLUTELY tried on wedding dresses twice so far with no groom in sight. The first time was because I was moving overseas, didnt know what might happen while I was gone, but wanted to have that moment with my friends. Nah I could never take a liking to Rachel. It especially bugs me how till this date, many ppl hate Emily who's a million times better n justified than Rach.Rachels feelings only rekindle when Ross is committed. Jessica Ashley is played by Alison Sweeney, who actually was one of the main characters on Days Of Our Lives for 25 years (up until 2022). Also, John Aniston, Jennifer Aniston's father, was on the show from 1985 until he passed away in 2022. The name Jessica Ashley is a combination of the names of Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson.
The actress who plays Kristen is Gabrielle Union who is most famous for Bring It On, 10 Things I Hate About You, She's All That and Being Mary Jane just to name a few. Allegedly, they called her in for this guest star role to fulfill the diversity requirements. She has mentioned in recent interviews that she wasn't treated well.
The other bride-to-be, Megan, is played by Andrea Bendewald, one of Jennifer Aniston's best friends. She was even a bridesmaid at her wedding to Brad Pitt and Jennifer was her matron of honor at her wedding.
The presenter at the Soapie Awards is McKenzie Westmore who was on two different soap operas: Passions and All My Children.
Goofs: The dress Monica finds at the store where the sale is is not the same dress she tried on before, but then the dress changes back to the original when they are admiring it on the couch and when she tries it on in front of Chandler.

It's both interesting and disheartening to learn that Gabrielle Union wasn't treated well on set. I tried looking up interviews for more information, but couldn't find anything yet. Although after finding one article that said that Union was the first black actor on the show, I must point out that no, "Friends" actually had TONS of black actors on the show. It's just that none of them were main characters or love interests (aside from 2 cases, of course). While the core cast was white, the show overall is more diverse than people give it credit for.

Ross and Rachel are supposed to be Jewish, but they are brother and sister.. Chandler happens to be Ross's best friend from high school.. Rachel is Monica's best friend from high school... Joey is Italian and happens to be Chandler's roommate... Pheobe happens to be white. I get upset that people get upset that there aren't more non white peope in Friends, and I don't understand why it's an "issue".... but if Gabrielle wasn't treated well, that makes me sad. Maybe/hopefully it was a misunderstanding because I can't imagein anyone on Friends being mean to her.

Though you made a mistake: Ross and Rachel AREN'T brother and sister, you're thinking of Ross and Monica. Although fun fact: the showrunners confirmed that Rachel is Jewish too.
But yeah, regardless of whether the six Friends are all white, you can't deny the obvious chemistry they all had with one another. If you had to choose one of the actors to switch out with a black one, who would you pick? The answer would be NONE of them, it simply wouldn't be "Friends" without the six actors that were chosen, they were all perfectly cast.
As for Gabrielle Union, from the little I've been able to find, it seemed she received condescending behavior from the director or whoever, treating her like an amateur when she was already an established actress. I wasn't able to find anything about the actors treating her badly, and I hope they didn't.
Also, I saw a post by somebody saying that "Ross and Joey went from fighting over her to fighting over a monkey," which isn't what happened. Joey only brought up the monkey to make Ross look bad to Gabrielle's character. Some people are just determined to take things out of context.
Gabrielle Union, the girl over which Ross and Joey fight, was in the best cheerIeader movie ever, "Bring it on" and she was also in "She's all that" and "10 things i hateabout you". sadly,
she said she was not treated the best on the set of Friends - they only called her in for this episode to seem more diverse.

The "Soapie" is just kind of like a magazine award - like a Soap Opera Digest award. They aren't necessarily for acting. They're kind of like just for most popular character. That's the way I took it. There used to be a bunch of soap opera awards back when there were a lot of soaps still on the air here in the US. They were huge in the 80s and early 90s.

Exactly. I'm surprised Oscar didn't realize that. Like does he forget Chandler hasn't been able to get one thing over Monica this entire time? Sure, you can say that they came to a compromise but in that one episode where he didn't want to spend all his savings on the weddings he relented in the end, so Monica either way.
If Monica told Chandler about the deal, same thing would have happened. Chandler would have given it up for Monica again.

Good observation about Rachel. But that’s due to Jennifer Aniston’s acting. She’s pretty much perfect in later seasons. She also became the most famous around this time and after Friends. I think, by the season 10, you can tell who kept working on their craft and got even better, who still did a decent job, and who kind of just relied on their talent but didn’t work very hard anymore. It’s just my opinion, I’ll just say that Jennifer and David were on top of their games.

Has anyone else ever noticed that the dress that Monica is fighting over in the shop is not the same one that they have her wearing in both of those scenes? The one from the shop had what looked like thicker beaded shoulder straps, while the one she's wearing in both scenes is a lot plainer and doesn't have the added detail.

That makes me sad that Courtney didn’t get an award for this role, Monica is a very underrated character. All the Friends are award worthy.
Don't quote me on this but a little fun fact that I heard is that the actress playing the woman who Monica was fighting over the wedding dress is Jennifer Aniston's (Rachel) friend and her pointing at her and going "HEY" was a little nod to that. It honestly kinda sucks the woman won in the end. Like she manipulated and got her way. I guess in the end though there's no real harm other than Monica having to find another dress.

I love Episode 17. Part of me wishes Chandler knew about the dress fiasco, but I love that Monica chose Chandler's band over their wedding dress, and actively avoided letting Chandler feel guilty for that. I feel like the typical romantic dispute storyline in fiction has the man give something up for the woman, and Monica made sure that didn't happen here. A truly selfless act of love.
And the plot between Ross and Joey is just great comedy.
As for Episode 18, I like that it explores this very male-stereotyped crisis through Monica. In its early seasons, the show would often point out the traditional differences between men and women and joke about them (without criticising). By this point though, I think the show has moved on from that, or at least its approach has become a little more nuanced. You still get some of that traditional 'men versus women' commentary, but the show is conscious enough of it to explore alternatives (20:18).

The first time was because I was moving overseas, didnt know what might happen while I was gone, but wanted to have that moment with my friends.
