    Thank you for including the film MAKING LOVE. I was a sound editor on that feature, doing fully 6 reels of it. I knew it would be groundbreaking, and even at the studio (Fox) it brought out quite a bit of homophobia amongst some of the technicians. It's the only film I worked on (out of 65 features) where virtually the entire film was re-scored because the director was very unhappy with it. "It's supposed to be ROMANTIC--not sound like PSYCHO1' So we shut down for about 2 weeks until the rescoring was finished.

      That is so amazing! Thank you for sharing that with us, and also for being a part of such an incredible movie that is now part of history.

    Accolades to you for your excellent work!! As an elderly gay man I remember how bad we were depicted in films and how things have changed....in part because of people like you!

    This was a beautiful and insightful video, but I have one gripe… where is Priscilla Queen of the Desert on this list? 😱 1994 film starring Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp, a story about 3 drag queens who go on a road trip through the Australian outback! Iconic!

    Lovely overview of queer cinema, nicely edited and narrated. Especially love the twee change of costume conceit. You really burrowed into the subject, too. So glad you recognized Parting Glances, a personal favorite of mine. Plus you showed the moment which always brings me to tears, when the lead tells his dying friend how much he loves him. Longtime Companion is another rather forgotten classic these days, so thanks for that. You also included Victim, whose pioneering effort is too often overlooked. I was surprised, however, you mentioned To Wong Foo without noting its original, Priscilla. I’d also have liked to see Beautiful Thing and Victor/Victoria among your notices. But overall IMO you did a great job, so thanks a million!

    One complaint. The Tragic Gay trope was present from the very beginning of cinema. 1914 A Florida Enchantment has a mob chase a man in a dress to his unaliving. The 1919 Different From The Others has blackmail & self-unaliving. And that has continued through to one of the most acclaimed gay films ever, Brokeback Mountain, which ends tragically for both partners

    Screwball comedies in the 30s and 40s were a good way for them to get around the hays code with use of innuendos. I think bringing up baby 1938 is a good example of this. Its said to have the first use of the word 'gay' in the way that we understand it today and Cary Grant makes reference to the gay clubbing scene in New York. It wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, but if you knew, you knew

    I always believed the relationship between Jack and David in Wings was much more complicated than either of their relationships with Mary. Their friendship survived even her involvement in it and that kiss is not how two straight men would be, even back then. Even with one of them dying.

    Surprised you didn’t mention Some like it hot 1959 one of Marilyn Monroe’s most well known films (and my favorite film of hers) It’s great how the films ending escaped the censors.

    Marlene Dietrich's name would more accurately be pronounced, "Mar-LAY-neh DEE-trick". As for "Maedchen In Uniform", the closest I'm going to get to THAT is 'MEDD-ken'. So much for my German tutoring!

    These are all American movies but there are quite a few vintage gay themed movies from Europe such as from France, England, Italy

      I agree, it's a bit limited in scope. Victim and Maurice are British movies, and there's the singular mention of Todo sobre mi madre (Spain). I would say, Fassbinder in Germany was a great queer director, Almodovar in Spain made many more queer themed movies. But for a 20m video, this is still a good effort.

    Wow, I love watching LGBTQ+ movies, as well as analysis of such films in videos on RUclips such as this. So why is it that I have only discovered your channel just today?!? Excellent work! You have a new subscriber. Additionally, thanks for featuring yourself in front of the camera, as well as the work you put into wearing period clotbing. Your charisma leaps off the video screen! You should have worn that cowboy hat longer Mikey. 😊👍 Keep up the good work! 😘🌈

    the little mermaid is also based on hans himself so not just the villain is queer coded. and i kind of hate that u would put 2024 behind brokeback in the thumbnail. we have to be more honest about our art forms than those who are trying to erase us

    Excuse me for being skeptical but when video essays like this comes up, I'm reminded by James Somerton. It gives you wartime flashbacks. It was traumatic. Can never tell who truly is doing it for the community or for the clout. Maybe you did your research. I still watched it till the end tho.

    • @MikeyCortes
      @MikeyCortes  11 месяцев назад +6

      Hi there, no worries. I appreciate you staying till the end of the video. To be honest I had no idea who James Somerton was, I had to look him up. Ever since I started this channel I did so to help myself come to terms with who I was back when I was a teen, and also because I've always been a huge fan of film in general. But I also wanted to share my opinions and my findings with the community and so I created this channel. I don't upload often, and this video took me about a month of research, which I gathered from about 6 different sources. I researched every single film I mentioned to the best of my ability as well as other important historical facts that were relevant to the video. I took my time and tried my best to be as accurate as possible, which is also why I dressed up for the different eras; I didn't want this to be a generic video because I care a lot about these historical movies. But yeah, the research for this video took me quite a while, so much so that I almost abandoned the project at some point but I wanted to do it so I took my time. I hope you have a great day.

    Not to be overly picky; but I have a (somewhat picky) point of view that, if one is pontificating on a subject, one should take care to avoid obvious mispronunciations, among other things; they can do damage to one's credibility. I think a more accurate pronunciation of "Salome' would be somewhat Germanic; hence, 'ZAHL-o-may'; since it is based on the Richard Strauss opera. A minor point, true; but I like to show a little respect for correct pronunciations of non-English titles, words, etc. They certainly have as much validity as works in English. That said, thanks for your presentation! Dissemination of our history and our cultural existence and contributions are very valuable in validating our heritage.
