Remembering Neil Peart

  • Excerpt from Drum Workshop's 'Drum Day LA' event, this moving, beautiful clip features John Good (Vice President of Drum Workshop) and Russ Kunkel (The Immediate Family, legendary session drummer) visiting the Drum Workshop 'John Good's Gallery' and reminiscing on their experiences with the late Neil Peart.
Drum Channel founder Don Lombardi comments: Neil Peart's loss was devastating on two levels. First, of course, to the entire drumming community. As Jimmy Chamberlin recently commented, “A piece of Neil lives in nearly every contemporary drum part in rock- whether people realize it or not.”⠀

Secondly, on a personal level. Before every tour, Neil would block out a Drum Channel studio for a full month to practice before Rush rehearsals even started. One big lesson I definitely learned from Neil is always be prepared.⠀

While he was at DC we would have lunch every day in my office and he would always want to know what other drummers might be coming in to visit or record. It was always amazing to me that he was just as excited to meet his drumming idols as they were to meet him.⠀

There are so many great memories. I once bought a light at Restoration Hardware because I thought the wing screw design would be perfect for the Time Machine set- and Neil agreed.⠀

When he liked something he would just light up. If he thought something was not quite right, he would never say he didn’t like it. He would just say, “Let’s try something different.”⠀

Neil cared greatly about education for drummers and the importance of having a good private teacher. He almost quit drumming at one point but his teacher encouraged him to keep going.⠀

There is a lot that we can learn from Neil as a person and a drummer. We will do our best to continue our mission... as he wanted it. - Don Lombardi

The world? Let's be reasonable. The world has over seven billion people on it. Most of them went on about their day after Neil Peart passed away, and couldn't have cared less. I am willing to bet that a lot of the world doesn't even know who he is. However, to his fans out there (who don't even make up 1 percent of the world) I am sure this was a powerful video. There was always a calm, knowing that those guys were out there, doing they're thing. And now it had come to an end and I just can't seem to put it down, to leave it be, Neil influenced me as much as a person as he did as a musician. The world is a darker place without him

Neil was my Mentor, My Main Inspiration... HE is the REASON I even BECAME a Drummer/Percussionist!
I saw RUSH 46 times in my life! The Very FIRST time was opening for KISS in 1975! I WAS until that time a DIE-HARD KISS Fan! THEN the house lights went out...
And they started playing "Bastille Days"... and I SAW "THE PROFESSOR" for the FIRST TIME and I was BLOWN AWAY! I turned to my older Brother and asked him,
"Kevin... WHO is THIS?" And he smiled and said, "You know that album with the Snow Owl on it... 'Fly By Night'? Well THIS is the Band! THIS is RUSH!"
AND I was a DIE HARD THROUGH and TRUE "RUSH FAN" From THAT NIGHT ON!!!
    KISS WHO??? LOL
I Miss him SO MUCH! My Heart Breaks EVERY TIME I see a pic of him {The are ALL over my Home!} Or Hear his speak or see one of his kits or hear a RUSH Song...
    My Heart just Re-Opens! :(
HE WILL NEVER EVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!
WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU NEIL! YOU CHANGED OUR LIVES FOREVER FOR THE BETTER! And the WORLD Is a Lesser Place WITHOUT YOU! :(...

Late 70s me and my brother purchased our first ever drum kit. It was an old Slingerland. The first song I learned was God of Thunder by Kiss. Peter Criss was my first drum crush, but the day I ever heard Neil Peart and Rush my life changed forever. I'm now 58 and haven't played drums for many years, but I never lost the love. Neil's influence has effected me in more ways than I can name. Without music, without Rush, without drumming and without Neil Peart I cannot honestly say I'd still be here. How to tell someone you've never met that you love them I suppose can only be summed up by the number of tears you shed due to their passing. Our sorrow is his legacy. We are both, Neil and us, entitled to those tears. And the meek shall inherit the earth...

I don't know. I thought Rush was a great band, at least for the first 8 studio albums, and were great live right to the end.
It seems like Peart could be a really cool guy with those he allowed into his circle.
But he generally looked upon the fans with contempt. I know Geddy and Alex like to say "He was just shy", but even if he was (odd occupation to choose if he truly was shy), he was still rude.
If Geddy and Alex were similarly 'shy' it could have really alienated their fans.

As a fan since 1976's 2112, I was truly honored to have met Neil not once, but twice in 1988 during the Hold Your Fire Tour and as a young fan I was so honored to meet him. He was just a normal, humble and amazing giant. At the time, I was a room service waiter at the hotel where he, Lee and Alex were staying. I certainly was so lucky to have met him the day of the concert (which I also attended) and the morning after. We traded a couple of sentences and I was on my way. The day I heard that he had passed was one of the saddest of my life (and I'm in my late 50's). My heart (like so many others) was/is broken. RIP Professor...
