I second your opinion @Jagrata. This is a treat to the ears of the people from 80s and 90s era. The landmark of Indian Railways. I specially love WDM2s for their dual tone horns. The one can also be found in this video from Pune shed hauling parcel vans. What a honk. Pure classic. Reviving
Most ALCOs smoke like this normally. These engines were made in the 50s and 60s, so carbon footprints were a joke back then. This is mainly caused by the lack of air from the turbo not being spooled, and a very high throttle position. Once the turbo gets to speed, it should settle down. These engines need some serious work, but the smoke may never go away completely, but it may be diminished significantly.
This video is old. as of 2025, 96.6% of network is electrified. Newer ones by GE, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works are far better than this. But mostly it's electric nowaday. But no doubt smoke is bad , coming of these locos.
I never enjoyed working with ALCO's...especially in the winter. By the time I got around to running them the ones in our fleet were 25 years old and living on borrowed time and parts. but once you got them started...by god could they pull.
It’s all caused because of turbo lag. These aren’t Indian build locomotives, they’re American and Canadian, from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. They could easily rebuild them, but as far as I know, they’re probably being scrapped. Still, in my honest opinion it looks pretty cool.
Mostly It's Swiss tech along with American. But you are right, most going to scrap or Conversion into Electric or Hybrid as Indian Railways is electrifying 100% of its route. 75% already done by start of 2022.
Glad to see these smoking Alcos are being phased out. The fumes were not fun while sitting in a compartment in a train behind one of these. Looking forward to more WAPs
Seems like there could be several reasons for the smoke. Alcos tend to smoke, poor maintenance, throttling up too soon, using high sulfur diesel fuel or asking to much of the locomotive. Thanks for sharing.
***** also running them with a bad injector will create smoke, LOTS OF IT, you can sometimes hear the ticking of the injectors as the driver ramps up the power
Nowadays people might have pseudo concerns for the excessive smoke. But these legendary machines have an inherent nostalgia and enthusiasm embedded in them. No as I travel in Indian Railways, I feel sad as I often miss the oppertunity to travel with them.
Just wow. That’s how the engines should be. Let’s get the steam locos back as well and have these alcos along with steam locos being used for commutation. The modern age AC locos are just dopey and ennui. Whilst the steam and alco locomotives possess such grunt, swagger, the honking and chugging of these engines are too good. It’s sight to behold for all of us
As the gallery into the hardworking alco locomotives when they were working that hard those could have been presented with a smoke show as if they were transported to the era of the locomotive builder and its Canadian subsidiary MLW were still producing steam locomotives.
Fantastic alcos they were the steam engine equivalent in 90s, loved em when I was a kid and now when I am 40 , it still makes my hair stand straight when I hear that slow thumping of engines, electric will turn to automation by 2030 no driver's, end of golden days!!
Anyone that has ever operated an ALCo D/E knows this is just their nature. They have terrible turbo lag due to the non mechanical turbocharger. Once the prime mover gets up in RPM's the turbo is way more efficient, and the engine produces less smoke. These engines smoked like this straight from the factory. I'd be more concerned with the truck hunting the locomotive is doing at 1:50

There were huge margins in the railways. It was a huge debt on our GDP. But for a good we are changing now. Hope it goes well for our nation.

My favorite diesel loco. Check out the turbo whine at 2:45. The video sound doesn't do it justice. Those ALCOs had phenomenal acceleration and you knew it was coming when those loud turbos spun up.
Debraj Deb Yep. The famous "ALCO Smoke" was caused by turbo-lag. When throttling up, the fuel mixture is too rich (too much fuel, not enough oxygen), until the turbo catches up. That is what gave the ALCO's the nickname "Honorary Steam Engines"
This shows that the diesel is not properly combusted. Low quality diesel. They should maintain only smokeless locomotives. Means other than this alco locomotives
This is not due to quality of diesel. It's due to turbo lag. The smoke clears up after the turbo builds boost pressure. These locos are mechanical injection so they are tuned at fixed points and cannot adjust on fly like computer controlled engine. These are more reliable and easier to maintain. They consume more fuel and make less power.
@@brdman8667 I've seen alcos smoking like this where there are no guys filming as well. It is because of turbo lag that this coal tar is released by ALCOs
