Hi! It's kind of hard to explain with just words, but I'll give an example. If you have a light colored cereal bowl to compare, you'll better understand what I'm talking about. Start with a medium gray moon. Example: Picture a light source on the left side of a crater. The easiest way to start with a crater is to draw a dark "C" closest to the light source. Then draw a light, narrow backwards "C" that is away from the light source. So, a dark "C" on the left side of the crater and a narrow, light backwards "C" on the right side of the crater. You then start shading from left to right. Start on the left (touching the dark C) with a darker shade and gradually fade it to light as you shade towards the lighter backwards "C". [Dark to light inside of the crater] The finishing touch is called a "plane break". You then draw a light C against the left side of the dark "C". This creates the lifted ridge that reflects light. Then do the opposite. A dark backwards "C" against the right side of the backwards light "C". This creates a ridge shadow on the furthest right side of the crater. It's way easier to draw it than it is to explain it, but if you place a light colored cereal bowl beside a lamp you will see what I'm talking about. You can probably even do this with you hand. If you still have trouble, please reach out to me on my Discord channel.
