Plot Field Trip- Part 1

  • On September 10th 2015, we went to our secret plot sites to investigate some of the trees planted over the past few years. Along the way, we gather seed, discuss future plans, and Steve relates to us the successes and failures of Chinquapin restoration efforts.
We recommend watching it in 720p if you can. Our new camera tends to pixelate movement across "busy" landscapes like the clearcut we're in, making the video quality seem worse than it is at first. We are trying to address this problem in future videos.

I harvest a lot of Allegheny chinquapin nuts from trees that I’ve planted. Leather gloves and needle nose pliers are great harvest tools.

If I knew where that is and if I could get there, I would volunteer. Build 12 foot fences around the plot to keep deer from eating the trees.

We prefer keep our plots natural and as undisturbed as possible. A 12 ft high fence would not be possible in such remote areas, but we'll see what comes up in the future with more scientific study. For the moment, we are doing everything we can through observing nature to learn how to best grow them, and to get enough trees producing enough seed to keep the species alive at all. Once we have a seed source, we can potentially move toward less remote and secretive research plots, more volunteers, and a better genetic profile.

If it would help I know where there are a couple of seeding chiquapin trees. What part of the Ozarks are you in. Would it be productive to root cuttings and replant after the roots are established.

I'm in Arkansas and possibly the same county as the fellow from the nursery who gave you the seeds if his name is Stan by chance.
