- Riley 9 Sports Car built by Rob with Tiger Moth airplane engine Auckland New Zealand 2011. This car won the pre-1960 class race at the February Leadfoot festival in New Zealand 2016.
This is an incredible beauty as well as an engineering balance between nightmare and genius....
John, the builder also restores vintage aircraft and crafts superb sailing yachts! Mike
That is the just the coolest of cars!! What a marvellous job he made of that!
The builder does what they used to do in the 1930’s. Builds cars, races them. Rebuilds aircraft and flys them, he even builds the finest yachts and sails them! A real cool guy. Thanks for your comment, Mike
The car is as beautiful as the incredible sound coming out the engine that is music to the ears! Everything is so well balanced on this special, simply delightful. I love the engine rev to the speed of the car, it goes like an electric car with with so much bottom end torque!
Ronit, Glad you like it! Mike
I congratulate you on a wonderful conversion!
+Squarerig Two Thanks for your comment- Rod will be pleased! Mike _ AirflowNZ
Genius use of an aero engine and it sounds fantastic! Well done!
Dave, Thank you! Cheers! Mike
Great looking special! Nicely done.
Craig, Glad you like it! Mike
Bravo!! What an epic achievement. I love it! Col, Bay of Islands.
Col, thanks for your comment. I am sure the owner/builder will be pleased to learn that! regards, Mike - AirflowNZ
Bill - glad you like Robbies great work. Cheers, Mike, AirflowNZ
I've always wanted an areoengined car 🤩😍
ISTP, this guy also rebuilds aircraft and constructs beautiful small yachts, a true craftsman! Mike
Must have been quite a technical challenge. I think this must be either based on a Gypsy Moth engine or an inverted Tiger Moth engine modified to make it run with the crank at the bottom . Either way it must be a task keeping an inline air cooled engine supplied with enough cooling air at low speeds.
The builder used an inverted Tiger Moth engine with cooling obtained with a fan from a Porche Mike
That is stunning.
+Ben Lloyd Thank you Mike - AirflowNZ
Despite living in Coventry (uk) I dont know much about Riley's,but i've never seen a better looking one than that, the line, detail and finish are remarkable, where can i see more images of this car please?
Bloody kiwis.. despite being at the edge of the world they are both inventive and tenacious. They do very clever work and they never brag about it. Quiet achievers and damn smart . Richard Pearse is a good example.. of course most people have no idea who he is and history has mostly ignored his work. And this is coming from an Australian.
James, thank you so much for your honest and thoughtful comments which I have shared with the Riley builder. He said its things like that which make you feel good! cheers, Mike - AirflowNZ
@@AirflowNZ WHAT????, a Bloody Aussie booming up a Kiwi? unheard of.
I agree with you though, This is a beautiful example of Kiwi craftmanship.
I absolutely love this Riley Special. Please could you put me in touch with Rob who built it?Many thanks JB
Check out Roycroft classic car race. This is a short documentary with the Riley featured.
Bloody marvelous!
Gerald, I have passed your comment to the car builder! regards, Mike - AirflowNZ

Michael, many thanks for your comment, Mike
Super!
John, thanks for your comment, Mike - AirflowNZ
Hi Mr Bob - so far I have not seen any other Video on this great machine. Regards, Mike, AirflowNZ
Wow!
Hi i love the video very nice machine this guy has built. Is there anymore video's of this marvelous machine on youtube anywere ???
Love it. Good inverted engine! How is it mounted in your car?
Craig, now the cylinders are facing upwards and not down, special engine mounts were fabricated by Rob the builder. The car was built by the owner who is a friend of my son. Rob has rebuilt a Tiger Moth which features in one of my other videos, it;s the black fuselage one. Cheers, Mike - AirflowNZ
Interesting car. Were there any particular problems involved in turning the engine upside down to non-inverted?
promerops - How big a list do you want! Info not on Google and many of the problems Rob encounter are best forgotten! Lets just say you just have to put an oil pump in the sump which not can have an oil level that can be measured! cheers, Mike - AirflowNZ
Does it not overheat? The airflow would normally come fro the propeller.
A Porsche fan was used with owner making ducting. It does the job nicely! Mike
Just found out Tigermoths had Holden engines
Shame that Holden has closed down! Mike
Why use an aero engine, rather than a Ford Duratec or a current bike engine?
This was a joke right?
NZ Salt Flats Racer Well, I'm actually quite curious. If I was building something like this, I'd use something like a Ford Duratec , Vauxhall 16-Valve, Ford Flathead, or a period twin cam.
He probably did it for a) period and theme correctness, b) it's what he had, and c) because there are few things cooler than near-bottomless torque from an aero engine :D I also love the aesthetic of the engine spilling out from the bonnet, much cooler than any Duratec or flathead to me (and I LOVE flatheads)
He used an aero engine instead of a Duratec engine for the same reason you don't serve frozen pizza in a wedding; driving it is supposed to be a special occasion!
Period twin cam? Like the Riley engine?
