Thank you for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova. Diana actually turned 16 on 31st May 2019, but was 15 at the time of this performance. The show she is on here is Ты супер! (translated as "You are Super") and it is for children who have found themselves without parental care at some point in life. According to the programme, Diana was abused by her biological mother until around the age of 3 years, and ended up in an orphanage. While there, a massage nurse named Irina Ponik took care of her, and a strong bond was formed, to the extent that a year afterward Diana was adopted by Irina, and Irina has been her "Mom" ever since. It seems that for the first year or so Diana would hardly speak, and singing lessons were recommended, and the rest is history. Diana is now with a loving family, and her music training goes from strength to strength. Since winning the show, she has received much support from Igor Krutoy, the bald guy on the judges panel, and who is one of Russia's foremost composers and song writers. You may have seen him play piano for Dimash sometimes. Diana's cover of "Rechenka" a Russian folk song, on the same show in 2018 is something else, and very much worth watching. I've watched other vocal teacher's and they all pretty much agree that Diana is singing on a yawn. The show is called, You Are Super and it's for children who are less fortunate and children who are in the orphanages. It's to give them a chance for a better life. Diana was abused by her birth mother who is an addict and alcoholic. She eventually put Diana out of her house when Diana was just 3 years old. This was in Russia in February so you can imagine how cold it must have been. Diana also had a broken arm. Relatives took Diana to live with them but eventually took her to the orphanage. A lady working at the orphanage ended up adopting Diana. Diana wasn't speaking so her adopted mother took her to the doctor and he suggested that Diana be enrolled in singing classes. And that is where Diana found her voice.

A yawn with a tongue that is sliding backwards into her throat. She manages it pretty well without falling into a strain.
Texas les61 Rosannasfriend very interesting about the yawn. I hadn’t thought of that. To me this is a low larynx sound. Someone else also said they thought she was generating an overtone in the low register. This is a technique used by some bass vocalists in acapella groups. The false chords apparently produce a sound one octave lower than the vocal folds. To me though Diana’s sound still sounds more like a low larynx sound than an overtone. Cher sings similarly and you can hear Shakira use it often but not as pronounced as Diana’s.
Its an open throat technique, similar to a yawn for the resonance, but she's a contralto which allows her to get that low, and she's also dropping her larynx to the throat floor for maximum resonance... She is also controlling her soft palette to add brightness to the tone. So its a combination of 4 different things. If another female tried to do this same technique it would sound like this but probably not nearly as low because Diana is a true contralto, and most women can't hit notes anywhere near that low. What makes Diana so unique is that she has such a low register but can sing very high into the head voice range. She can also control her voice better than most professional singers, and use varying degrees of the aforementioned techniques at will, in any combination, anywhere in her range. Combine that with her ability to deliver soft, breathy vocals, varying levels of belting, varying levels of resonance with total control of where she is resonating her voice, and she's damn near unbeatable... this is why her voice is so unique. If you add to this the level of passion she sings with, she's simply ahead of her time. Never really been a singer quite like this, with this much passion, heart, control, technique, and sheer ability. So condensing all of that into "singing on a yawn" is kind of dismissing what's going on here. There's a whole lot more going on than that.

Thank you for sharing Diana with the rest of the world. Diana, a young teenager from Russia who will make you feel things that you will not forget. I believe people that have experienced hardship or trauma in their live can sometimes channel that pain in their singing. Read Diana’s backstory about being neglected, abused and discarded by her mother to the streets at 3. Diana ended up in an orphanage and could not speak until she started to sing. She is able to bring mystery, beauty and empathy to everything she sings. Truly a one in a billion singer.

What is she doing with her voice? It's incredible. It's like she's subcontralto. And I agree that it sounds almost electronic or has a heavy Cher modulation to her voice, but I think it's really her as well because of how she slipped into it in one of her early phrases.
Those are some really deep notes she's singing, and if I'm not mistaken, she's actually singing in a lower key... what the hell? This is one of my favorite songs to sing in my baritone register, and she's brought a whole different atmosphere and energy to this song. It's very fascinating.
