Thank you. I only came to this video because I was unsure about how much torque I needed to have on the bolts that go on top of the springs. All the other info was very helpful.

I’m rebuilding a 97 rm125 and was stuck on this clutch part bc i felt like i was missing something. Turns out i wasn’t and this video helped a ton with trying to figure out how that clutch actually works
We've had clutches stick and after separating them they were fine but then after they sat another day they would stick again. Absolutely correct on the extra plate setup. We run them all the time but you must be VERY careful on the installed height, too tall and it'll be hard to find neutral. We will usually modify the outer hub to fix this. You should also explain how the transmission gets it's oil from the clutch basket on some bikes. Most people don't realize how this works and it doesn't show an oiling diagram in the manual like the engine has! Good video as usual.

I just installed a new clutch disk assembly and new clutch cable on my 07 Suzuki Boulevard S40 and I noticed after everything has been put back together shifting up isn't so much a problem but down shifting most of the time is really hard, and if I'm in first just sitting there I can't put it back in neutral until I turn the bike off. I was thinking maybe I needed a new push pin as the clutch wasn't disengaging all the way but now I'm starting to wonder if I needed to pay closer attention of the steel plates. So I may be pulling the bike back apart again tomorrow to check that out.
I have a dragging clutch - been that way for years. I can’t kick it in gear cold but can when hot if right after a stall, though still with difficulty. Otherwise clutch operates fine. Using thinner gear oil may have caused the hot vs cold difference. The part about sticky plates is interesting. Everything in there is expensive. A set of factory friction plates is bumping up against $250. A lot of money with not a lot of confidence it will change a thing.

That notch it the fiber plate is the light spot or the heaviest spot so they have them staggered so it's not unbalanced just like the color dot on tires that's the light spot and you are supposed to put the rim lock in that spot
Hi Joseph. Not always the case even as rational as it sounds. Many manuals state to line up the notches and Yamaha for ex, states to line up single or double notches. The clutch tree >>>> how far to screw it in before tightening the nut? I ask cuz, I understand it shouldn't be bottomed out like it was from the factory. Thanx
When I think of pressure I think flats should face each other but if it’s flats agains friction and in the case of things like springs in fly wheels maybe it’s a good idea to meet it with the round

Hi sir, I've experienced the same problem the one you said the friction disc doesnt separate from the plate when the clutch cable is pulled..is it the oil makes that problem? DT100 2stroke motorcycle.
Oil can be a factor. Many times an oil change alone does not solve it though after a wrong (or cheap) oil is used. De-glazzing the plates is a first step or friction plate replacement with the correct oil from then on. 👍 Thank you for taking the time to comment! Hit that subscribe button if you haven’t please! I did a bottom end rebuild on my RM 125 I put the old clutch back in it cuz I had some life left in it and when I put it in it didn't disengage so I took it apart check my work put it back together still bad put a new clutch in it still bad the baskets do spin independently but I feel the clutch is sticking but it just won't unstick
I just noticed your oil recommendation the guy handed me an 80 weight which was slightly off from what they recommended but he said it would be fine so thanks for being thorough enough to give me another option to look at without even replying to my comments

All I can say about the "notches" is the Yamaha TZR125 or 250 also has exactly the same with notches, you guys can dig into that, it says that it has to line up opposite of each other in order to seal correctly and grip in a certain balanced way. Go check it out !
I recently bought a kawasaki 80 1988. It had no top end, crank bearings were seized, but evening else was there. After locating the proper parts and reassembling the motor I'm having issues with my clutch engaging/disengaging and getting the tranny to shift to neutral. I have to note that when i got the bike with the seized crank bearings i could find neutral and the clutch worked as well. Pull the clutch lever the bike would roll in gear. I how I'm explaining this well. Because I've followed all directions in manual the bike shifts threw gears can't find neutral double checked neutral set screw kick starter great primary gear water pump shift lever. Is my clutch wrong? What did i do wrong?

Yes. Use an old steel plate and weld a rod to it to act as a handle to hold it while your torque the nut. So would that explain why my clutch on my 1979 Yamaha yz250 is sticking because I'm using 10w40 4t oil not recommended for a wet clutch but I have w75 for wet clutch
Maybe im mistaken but you did not put the Clutch push rod in,ive looked at other videos of case assembly also and i didnt see you install the rod,am i mistaken or did you forget it?

hello, i just picked up a 2000 rt100 for 150$ runs great, but in gear the bike doesn’t move, u can feel it try though. i took the clutch off and the side didn’t have consistent grooving, but it wasn’t the best either, the plates didn’t look worn down but as this is my first time ever opening up a bike, i’m not too sure lol. i just bought a fiber set, and springs and i’m hoping to make this a quick flip. none of the plates were warped either. will update soon

My neightbour has a zzr600 1993 with the offset outerbasket finger and he installed it with the last fiber touching it and rode around. He took the clutch back out and rotated the last plate so it wasnt resting on that tooth and inline with the larhe gaps between the fingers like the rest of the fibers and took it for a spin. He said there was a considerable power gain when he had it in the latter configuration. Possibly is a longevity function or possibly a restriction function. But you for sure lose power when putting the last plate on that tooth. You should dyno it

I was out riding with my friends on my 1999 husqvarna 125 and the "clutch pedal" just flopped, without pulling the clutch lever in I could freely move the selector up and down gears, and when we tried to get it moving there was a scratching/screeching sound when we slipped the clutch then instantly lost power and stalled, any ideas?

pls help! Does anyone know if this work video apply to a suzuki 4stroke sp370? My bike will not consistently move into neutral and the internet thinks that, "The detente at the end of the pawl lifter on the cam driven gear that the shifting shaft acts upon could be getting stuck as it's old and worn out. The pin costs $2.95 and is worth replacing. As well, the spring that provides force against the gear shifting cam could be worn". anyhelp would be appreciated
I dont get it, how are those springs putting pressure on the pressure plate in this setup? The springs arent even touching the plate, nor are the bolts

broke my clutch diring disassembly. Didnt have the proper tool so tried to pry against the case to lock it together. I screwed a fiber plate to a metal plate and used that to lock the two sides of the clutch together to remove the nut. it was way over torqued in my defense and the plates were about junk anyways.
Exactly paused at 29 seconds in the video,, is there one washer or two,, mine only have one and it rubbing slightly,, could be wrong just want to know if you could verify,, tkz...

Maybe not...lol...here's a freebie...deglaze the fibers and steels if they are in spec and use the correct oil that won't "glaze" the plates. Also, the clutch gets glazed by improper free play adjustment or lack of free play when handlebars turned lock to lock. Now go sub to my newsletter....lol better yet become a member and get 20 min with me on live chat...:) Keep Wrenching, Shane Conley, Instructor/Motivator/Motorcyclist
The clutch is so bad on my kx125 that I can't start it in gear or it immediately dumps if it starts, and when it doesn't start in gear it just bumps me forward lol time for a new one
I've seen clutch basket locking tab washers with small bits missing from them . caused by being over used . the tab bent over in the same place . usually the bits are found floating around at the bottom of the casing. it's a sign of poor workmanship so everything needs to be carefully inspected.
Why would it matter which way a clutch friction plate and a steel plate matter how it's laid. Just like brakes once they wear and it's all about the friction, all serviceable wear parts. Really no different than taking sandpaper to any material the physics just don't care which direction. Just my opinion 😊👍
There sure is a lot of debate on this...even between manufactures... We sure love you taking the time to comment. Are you coming to the next live session?

This seems like an awesome college course for someone who loves riding motorcycles! Is this course available in a distance learning format???
I have a dragging clutch - been that way for years. I can’t kick it in gear cold but can when hot if right after a stall, though still with difficulty. Otherwise clutch operates fine. Using thinner gear oil may have caused the hot vs cold difference. The part about sticky plates is interesting. Everything in there is expensive. A set of factory friction plates is bumping up against $250. A lot of money with not a lot of confidence it will change a thing.
Hopefully the community here will chime in, if not that's a great question for Shane directly! He offers 1:1 training. I'm not sure on specific videos. We are just the call center.

If I can ever be of service to you, here is a video explains how to connect with me.

I ask cuz, I understand it shouldn't be bottomed out like it was from the factory.

Hey bud...glad it helped. We get 400 comments a day and hit up channel members first. Just not enough hours in the day. As for the oil I like to stick with OEM or Belray gear saver like this: amzn.to/2IY5Li3

Is there an easy diy tool to lock the basket for the nut to torque?
Yes. Use an old steel plate and weld a rod to it to act as a handle to hold it while your torque the nut. Here are some examples of ones you can buy so you know what they look like: amzn.to/34ytDiE

So would that explain why my clutch on my 1979 Yamaha yz250 is sticking because I'm using 10w40 4t oil not recommended for a wet clutch but I have w75 for wet clutch
I have a question why did you not soak the clutch plates in oil prior to installing that way they would be lubricated upon initial startup?
If you looked closely there was some residue of some kind of fluid/liquid on them. I think he did he just had them out long enough to drain off.
Maybe im mistaken but you did not put the Clutch push rod in,ive looked at other videos of case assembly also and i didnt see you install the rod,am i mistaken or did you forget it?
This very was part of an entire engine disassembly/assembly series so every part was in one of the videos. Here is the playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLAtBOuPaEyt_pO6zS6U7Rpjk-uCEYZZ8O

hello, i just picked up a 2000 rt100 for 150$ runs great, but in gear the bike doesn’t move, u can feel it try though. i took the clutch off and the side didn’t have consistent grooving, but it wasn’t the best either, the plates didn’t look worn down but as this is my first time ever opening up a bike, i’m not too sure lol. i just bought a fiber set, and springs and i’m hoping to make this a quick flip. none of the plates were warped either. will update soon
We sure love you taking the time to comment. Good luck on the flip and when you make all the cash, don't forget to donate to us form the free video lesson! 😎 We work with a lot of "flippers" on the techline and help you avoid costly mistakes! Use it if every needed.

You should dyno it
I just bought an old 1968 Suzuki k15 and it doesn't shift, I was wondering if you could tell me anything that could help. I haven't taken it apart yet because of space so I haven't really seen much on the inside. Your videos are really informative by the way.

sometimes the clutch engages where's way tighten clutch up buy lever then you will have clutch drive need to hot spot of weld on clutch engaged

My bike will not consistently move into neutral and the internet thinks that,
"The detente at the end of the pawl lifter on the cam driven gear that the shifting shaft acts upon could be getting stuck as it's old and worn out. The pin costs $2.95 and is worth replacing. As well, the spring that provides force against the gear shifting cam could be worn".
anyhelp would be appreciated
Great video thanks!

Shane Conley you could just say I need a new clutch and oil change lol
Maybe not...lol...here's a freebie...deglaze the fibers and steels if they are in spec and use the correct oil that won't "glaze" the plates. Also, the clutch gets glazed by improper free play adjustment or lack of free play when handlebars turned lock to lock.
Now go sub to my newsletter....lol better yet become a member and get 20 min with me on live chat...:) Keep Wrenching,

The clutch is so bad on my kx125 that I can't start it in gear or it immediately dumps if it starts, and when it doesn't start in gear it just bumps me forward lol time for a new one
Spencer S me too same my clutch is just as bad as your's haha also on a kx125!
More like the clutch basket has notches in it. I've replaced 6. That did the same. They get pounded on
I've seen clutch basket locking tab washers with small bits missing from them . caused by being over used . the tab bent over in the same place . usually the bits are found floating around at the bottom of the casing. it's a sign of poor workmanship so everything needs to be carefully inspected.
Why would it matter which way a clutch friction plate and a steel plate matter how it's laid. Just like brakes once they wear and it's all about the friction, all serviceable wear parts. Really no different than taking sandpaper to any material the physics just don't care which direction. Just my opinion 😊👍
Atf is best
There sure is a lot of debate on this...even between manufactures...
