damn. this film was good but i think that the bond, the love between Alexander & Hephaistion should have more attention. There should be more scenes with them both because love between those 2 is a historical fact. That bond is pure and natural...

This relationship was the best thing about the movie. :S I know they said they followed Mary Renault a great deal, but... not enough. :(
    Awesome video.

Many of A/H videos are too sweet and the music doesn't fit to the film - that's what I don't like about them. But this one is simply perfect. Placebo was a very good choice and the cut of the scenes is amazing as well. All in all this was the best video about this couple I've ever seen. 5/5 and added to my favorites. Thank you for uploading.

    Beautiful video!
As for the A/H relationship matter. The "they were a couple" fans and the "thery were frinds" fans seems to forget that ancient Greeks didn't worry about who you had sex with, just what role you took. It was about power and social position. So if a guy took a passive role with someone of lesser social status than him, that was a Bad Thing. But if he took the dominant role, or if he took a passive role with someone of a better social status than him,it didn't matter.

This is my favourite Alexander/Hephaistion fan vid. The editing, the selection of the song everything is just perfect...And yes I agree that Mary Renault wrote the best historical fiction on ATG. This particular line at the beggining is my favourite from 'Fire From Heaven' btw...Excellent stuff!Alexander + Hephaistion forever!

Actually the battle of Chaeronea was a battle
    between NORTHERN GREEKS (Macedonians)
of the northern Hellenic Kingdom of Macedonia,
and the SOUTHERN GREEKS (Athenians and
Thebans) of the two southern Hellenic city states
of Athens and Thebes. It was in effect a Civil war
with the purpose of uniting all the city states
and Kingdoms into a single entity that could call itself
Hellas (Greece). And then United as Greeks could
    go on and conquer Asia.

Are people being lame on here and making homophobic comments? I didn’t see any but obviously you put this comment for a reason so I can infer from context that somebody was being stupid. Perhaps if they were educated properly they would know that throughout history it was quite common for men to wear makeup and engage in homosexual relationships because men were considered equals and therefore capable of a achieving perfection. For most of history, women didn’t even wear makeup, so whose feminine now right? People can be ignorant. It’s best just to pay them no mind, but I can see where you’re coming from. It definitely gets aggravating after a while 😑

Macedonians (who were ethnically Greek) spoke
Doric Greek a rough, harsh and broad dialect of
northern Greek . Doric Greek was probably
unintelligible to a Greek speaking the
southern Attic Greek dialect. Much like the
northern English 'Brummie' dialect was unintelligble to a Southerner
The evidence is clear to see
on the ancient Macedonian Pella Curse tablet which
is written in Doric Greek as are the 17000 inscriptions
on ancient Macedonian graves all written in Doric Greek.

@dimalex8 Further more: Alexander inherited the idea of an invasion of the Persian Empire from his father Philip whose advance-force was already out in Asia in 336 BC. Philips campaign had the slogan of "freeing the Greeks" in Asia and "punishing the Persians" for their past sacrileges during their own invasion (a century and a half earlier) of Greece. No doubt, Philip wanted glory and plunder."There is a lot of research about the early Greek years, read them first before commenting nonsense.

OK, one last time, to Vascular15: At the battle of Chaeronea, fought when Alexandros was 16, he commanded the Macedonian heavy cavalry and his soldiers wiped out the best infantry unit in Hellas. This was The Sacred Band of Thebes, composed of 1500 men, 750 pairs of "lovers" with an older man and a younger man trained to fight in pairs. They fought to the last man. The norm was bisexuality. My point is that had they not been lovers it would have been exceptional by the standards of the period.

[Richard Stoneman, Honorary professor of Greek,

"In favour of the Greek identity of the
ancient Macedonians is what we know of their
language [Doric Greek], their place names,
names of the months, and many of their
    personal names, especially royal names
which are Greek in roots and form. This suggests
that they did not speak Greek merely as
a lingua franca, but spoke it as natives though
    with a local accent."

@dimalex8 . Reed the many thesisses of professor Snodgrass, Emeritus Professor in Classical Archeology at the University of Cambridge: about "Archeology and the Greek State and Archeological Survey" and many more. He did research especially about the Archaic period of Greece (800 BC - 450 BC) that followed the period called The Greek Dark Ages (1200 BC - 800 BC) so there was a Greece long before 450 BC. There is a lot more research about this topic where the Western civilisation was born.

loving a man was not considered weakness those times. Greeks were especially fond of beauty and perfection, no matter if its male or female or even a building. They were chasing perfection in all aspects, the quote " Ever to Excel" comes from homers iliad. Dont compare modern times and society with one 2000 years ago, back then there were not so many rules and taboo's.
Note: Not all were homo/heterosexual, there was also a non sexual love relationship between men called "platonic love"

And - when the answer satisfied the King that
the answer was "Yes", he kept him - the rest
of his life. There are too many references to
Bagoas in antiquity for it to be myth! As with

@bookkeeper57 First- he had one (1) child
(a marriage consumated to provide that son!)
But, as historians confirm - his "lover" was Heph-
aistion; and when he was away he slept with the
famous "Persian Boy" of history, Bagoas, not the
wife(s). Only the mother of his son was a real
marriage - the other three were not taken serious
by anyone except the politicos intended! Funny
how despite all the effort to bury his being gay -
its his love for Hephaistion that endures...

When he crossed the Hellespont Alexandros was careful to observe the historical precedents of his policy to act as the representative of all the Hellenes. He sacrificed at Troy at the altar of Achilles. Hephaistion sacrificed at the altar of Patroclus. This well-settled fact indicates that the two men saw themselves as related to each other in the same way as Achilles and Patroclus. Under the conventions of classical Greece if they had not been lovers it would have been unusual, not the converse

    Ancient Macedonians spoke north-western Greek
which was a rough broad dialect of Greek known
as a composite of Aeolic and Doric Greek.
It was such a rough dialect it would have been difficult
for Athenians who spoke the more refined Attic Greek
    to understand it.
In much the same way the English Geordie dialect was
completely unintelligible to someone from London 100 years ago,
and still today is difficult to understand.

@Vascular15 : why is it weak? Are you using modern standards to judge the evidence. We don't have a plethora of good information about Alexandros. The surviving histories are all tertiary sources: they relied on earlier histories which are lost, and all of the primary sources in the form of writings are basically lost. If you assume that bisexuality is the norm, not deviant, it is strong evidence. Bisexuality in this situation was a norm in Classical Greece.

@maryoik I do not speak greek, you are right, maryoik. Although I do think greek is a beautiful language. I wish I did speak it. I am sorry but I do not understand the meaning of your last posting. I would never understand anyone speaking Greek, that is true. You have a nice night and take care as well.

The historical Macedonians, a tribe of North Greece spoke a north greek dialect... They belonged (partly or not) to the greek language and ethnic group. You should buy a book of Ancient Greek language or an History Book .. If you aren't able to do so, I'll scan a page for you.

The latest genetic evidence on modern Greeks shows
them to be descended from the Seima-Turbino culture,
and that the earliest known homeland of the Greeks
was from the forests of the northern Russian steppes
    2000 BC.
[Chao Tian et al (2009)] " The closest population
to modern Greeks are Southern Italians and Tuscans.
The low genetic distance between Greeks and Italians
(-0.0001 fst table), suggests once again that southern
Italians are are little more than Latin speaking Greeks."

There's no real difference between Dialect and Language... I called it Dialect in relation to a more standard language reality , that's the Ionic-Attic and then the Koinè. But you should know that in greek Dialektos means Language...
Graecia paeninsula parva Europae terra est, sed antiquorum Graecorum fama totum mundum peragrat... Here in our italian schools, people study ancient languages like Latin, and Ancient Greece, we translate authors from antiquity like Cato, Ennius et cetera,

You're absolutely right about that book. I read it a while ago and I thought it was interesting and beautiful. I've been an Alexander/Bagoas fan since then. (Although I love Alexander/Hephaistion as well...)

Macedonian language belong to the Greek, (at leas Hellenic) group. In any case I don't understand why are you posting sentences in which I can read "Tizio Caio spoke Macedonian". And so!? I believe you, but what?! What are you trying to say with that?
Anyway, do you want to show me your sources where I can read Macedonian (Ancient one, got it?) as Slav language.. And with concrete examples.. Then if you want I'll show mine.

@Vascular15 You assume, in your limited knowledge base, that those three ancient historians are the only three that ever wrote about Alexander and his deeds. You are incredibly wrong, you know. There are many many ancient texts as well as artifacts that depict the bi-sexuality of most all men of that age - from all countries. Alexander enjoyed spoils and debauchery on all levels - that is not argued. Most people agree with me. It's the way it was then. Accept it.

@Vascular15 Try reading some Herodotus, Xenophon, Athenaeus, or even Plato - all those writers of classical antiquity. All accounts from each abounded with the commonplace sexual relationships between men - particularly adult men and adolescent boys. There are attic cups and other pottery plates and reliefs on display at the Louve that depict boys and men copulating. Why can't you handle it, Vascular?

So what?? It's a well known fact that the
Macedonians who were proto-Greeks had stayed
behind in the extreme north (what is today the
northern Greek prefecture of Macedonia) and thus
they were uable to participate in the progressive
civilisation of the tribes further south. But the
Macedonians were still ethnically Greeks, they
came from the same gene pool as other Greeks,
they spoke Greek, had a Greek culture,
    and considered themselves Greek.

@Vascular15 Try reading some Paul Cartledge, considered to be the number one leading expert on ancient Green and Macedonian figures. Or - even Quintus Curtius Rufus - as I said - broaden your horizens - expand your small way of thinking. In those times, when two men laid together, it was said the very Gods blessed the union. It was commonplace - in all of Greece, Macedonia, Persia and all of Asia.
