    The compassion in this video made it feel like such a safe space. I’ve done laundry for forever, but there’s tons in life I wish was explained to me for the first time so kindly, these things can seem so overwhelming before you get the hang of it!

    Please continue making videos explaining basic adult "common knowledge" functions explained so kindly like this with shopping tours and explanations of what each of products are!! These videos could be so helpful to people on the Autism spectrum who commonly struggle with these kinds of care activities! Other ideas could be doing dishes, or simply just making a purchase at a store using different payment, or how to prepare for a job interview. This video was great, so patient and detailed.
    Side note - I laughed so hard at the part you said we'll be doing laundry until we die. It was so real.

    This is super educational and relaxing at the same time. I actually enjoy doing laundry but I’ve made some horrible mistakes in the past 🙈 (red shirt turned everything pink😅)
    But now I have a college kid and a high schooler who are learning all of this. You would be surprised how many kids in my daughters dorm had no idea how to wash their clothes. This would be so helpful for them❤

She always told me to not touch it for fear my arms would get stuck in the ringer like my cousin, 😮. Then she got a regular washer when she had my brother. Progress! I do my laundry like you! Thank you for this knowledge Mary! I have an ADHD laundry tip to share, especially if you struggle with the putting away stage! I used to dread laundry so much but this made laundry a completely neutral task for me.
    I sort my clothes by type before I do laundry like tops, bottoms, and then everything else. I set up three baskets so i’ll usually sort when i put my clothes into the hamper to minimize this task on a day i’m doing laundry. When it comes time to put away the laundry, everything in the load is already sorted (and makes socks much easier when a load is mostly socks, underwear, and towels). I also find this helps with staggering laundry and not needing to do more than one load in a day because you’ll wash your pants load when you’re running low on pants and won’t need to do a couple of loads of laundry because you’re low on just underwear. Hope this helps some fellow ADHDers, or others who dread laundry day!!
    I’d also like to add that if you don’t air dry at least some of your clothes, you should. Aside from taking care of the garment, you have a good excuse to forget about your laundry for a bit and take your time slowly putting things away as they dry😂

    • @BuriedTeeth
      @BuriedTeeth Год назад +1

      Oh, interesting tip! I have POTS and putting away laundry is an extremely exhausting task 😓 this sounds like it'd help... But yes, taking clothes out of wash to air dry also helps the rest of the load dry faster in the dryer. So while air dry might seem like a cumbersome, unnecessary thing, it can actually be more efficient!

    • @jasmint3207
      @jasmint3207 Год назад +1

      Dryers also use a lot of energy, so you can save money and ressources by air drying. I air dry everything (unless it's too humid., that can cause mold)

    I love the “laundry style” phrase. It’s so accurate!! My whole family thinks we’re super crunchy because we use Free & Clear detergents. I just have horrendous eczema, but now that I’ve gotten so accustomed to the scentless detergents, I can’t stand the smell of fabric softeners and heavy fragrances. I swear I can also smell when people need to clean their washer due to overuse of softeners.

My mom had me doing laundry when I was in grade school (along with cooking and ironing). All three of us girls had to learn that stuff. For some reason my brother got a free pass. The place I’m renting now has a high efficiency washer and I detest it because they are just too high maintenance for me. I miss my old Sears top loader washer.

    one thing i see people do all the time is overfilling the washing machine. leaving enough room for the clothes to properly rinse is really important. another thing of note: fabric softener damages clothing. not saying anyone shouldn't use it if they like it, just be aware that you're going to notice your clothes degenerating faster. or, i guess if you've always been using it, there won't be a difference for you, but i realized after i stopped using it and stopped using too much detergent, my clothes started lasting a LOT longer. on the note of detergent, i've learned from professionals that you shouldn't be using more than 2 tablespoons for even the largest load you can fit in your machine. that was the game changer for me. i know it seems like more soap = more clean, but that's not technically how it works on a chemical level. hope that helps someone! :)

  • @chefkdowg
    @chefkdowg Год назад

    I never use fabric softener, and I wash everything in cold water.
    I wash my dress shirts in cold water, no bleach, and use shout for stained collars. On a pre-soak and delicate cycle, Then hang them up to dry.
    Suit jackets, slacks, nope! Dry clean once every couple of months.

    My college boyfriend was clueless on all home chores. I asked, how/why did your parents not teach you?! He said that when he was first taught, he wasnt good at chores right away so his mom just did everything. That made me sad. Children need to learn, and parents need to be patient with their early struggles. I know i made plenty of crummy family dinners as a kid, but now i cook pretty well. I wonder if this happens in a lot of homes--parents giving up on making their children do chores properly.

Knowing he would need to do laundry without a machine I taught him how to handwash and sent him off with a bar of Fellsnaptha. His troop made a washing machine with a bucket and a plunger and took turns using it. Not my son, he got his own bucket and hand washed everything. "Mom, I was done way before everyone else and I was cleaner". He did a great job. This was a great video. I enjoy doing laundry and consider myself good at it and I learned some new tips!

    Okay but why am I secretly excited to learn potential tips about doing the laundry even though I’ve been doing it since I was a kid 😂 Also, I would love another librarian video, but more focused on welcoming us to the community and showing us all the different services the library offers? Also you’ve done so many library videos so maybe you’ve already done this and I forgot/missed it, but you just have such a welcoming energy and I think it would be a great vid ❤

    I do laundry by pouring my entire laundry basket into the wash at once, pouring in detergent and turning the machine on. (my stuffs all black/dark colors and second hand anyway so it doesn't matter)

      Having your clothes be mostly similar colors is very handy for the wash 😅 i used to have only a couple whites and didnt ever wear them cuz i didnt have enough for a whites load. But i realized that whites look very professional so i bought more and now i feel more comfortable wearing them cuz i know i can easily put together a whites load. But most of my clothes are darks 🤣

    Well done Mary! Learned a lot and have on my list a lint lizard. So I totally know you were joking about “don’t dry your cat” but whoopsies I accidentally did that to my Siamese twenty years ago. We lived in Ohio and she loved warm places. While I was getting clothes out to hang she jumped in. I had no idea and closed the lid and turned it back on. I walked out and her a clunk clunk noise. My mom asked if I was drying shoes and I said no. She ran to the dryer, opened the door and out jumped the cat. Didn’t stop her from getting back in though 🤷‍♀️

    This is such a perfect video for you to do! You know the channel that is something about stuff you call your dad about? And the guy does stuff that dads help with. You’d be great for the mom version. My mom died when I was a teenager but she was never a great cook to begin with. You’ve taught me quite a bit about cooking. But also opened my eyes to tomato sandwiches and they.are.heaven.

      Hey, I'm so sorry that your mom has died. There is a youtube channel, "Mom, how do I" and there is a similar type of stuff that Mary does. Hope it helps, and I hope u have a great day!
      Edit: It turns out she has stopped youtube. There are some videos, but not that much
