I can totally confirm the Sleep Onset Insomnia thing. 2 years ago, I had really bad insomnia for about two months, because every time I went to bed, I would sit there worrying that I wouldn't get enough sleep. And the annoying thing is, it is a self sustaining cycle. The more you worry, the less sleep you get, and thus you worry about not getting enough sleep more.
I've had similar issues. It's not always worrying about not getting enough sleep that keeps me up, it's usually just my mind wandering before I realize that I'm not falling asleep. I've found that listening to videos by SciShow, Sixty Symbols, VSauce etc., helps keep my mind from wandering and I fall asleep faster. I make a playlist so I don't have to look at my phone to pick a new video and I keep the volume low enough that I can just barely hear the words clearly and have Premium so I can turn my phone screen off. Ideally, I'll monitor my caffeine/alcohol/nicotine intake and get some exercise throughout the day so that sleep comes easy but having those playlists is a very effective backup plan when sleep just won't come for me.
It said "physics of the everyday" course for me. But I'm sure it said that for everyone because video descriptions can't be personalized to individual user activity.
One that works for me every time, though it does require holding still for a moment, is to suck in a breath of air, as much as you can, for eight seconds, than suck in a little bit more and hold for around eight seconds. I do not know if it is because of the CO2, I always just though it inflated your lungs and prevented your diaphragm for being able to spaz out for a few moments, but I have had a lot of success with it, which I am glad for, because I get frequent hiccups.
6:41 it probably comes from an old article that said that your body needs the equivalent of about 8 glasses of water per day, the thing is the article also mentioned that a good chunk of that amount comes from the food you eat
One day, i was working at sunny field for a grate part of a day. At the end of the day i realised, that i drank 10liters of water and did no take single piss. 2 years after i heard about some girl drank same amount of water per 4 hours and died lol)

I've had sleep issues my whole life. Here's some things to avoid: if you absolutely must use a phone or laptop in bed, use a filter that shifts the color towards red/orange, like f.lux. Blue light delays melatonin production a lot more than warmer hues of light, as it is more like daylight than dusk. I also did the 23andme genetic testing, and one result was that I'm likely a slow caffeine metabolizer; a significant number of people process it much slower, so an afternoon coffee is still going strong at midnight. Once I stopped drinking anything caffeinated after noon, my insomnia lessened. Also, if you are taking melatonin, there's such a thing as too much. 3mg is 10x the correct dose for the vast majority of people, and overdosing on it can cause a rebound effect that wakes you up instead of helping you sleep. A huge number of over-the-counter products are overdoses.
When I get the hiccups, I don't need to gulp anything or hold my breath, I just take a couple sips of water. Sometimes, when I don't have water, I can even just swallow my saliva and it works! I think it's because I'm able to focus enough on calming down while drinking it that my diaphragm resets.

As odd as it sounds, I can cure my hiccups with a single deep breath. It's just one of the many odd things I can do, like flare my nostrils, pop my ears without yawning or swallowing, and move my entire forehead whenever I feel like.
Couple of interesting points: Mental activity factors into energy consumption as well. If you make your brain do a lot of heavy lifting, like hours of crunchy math calculations, you're likely find yourself getting hungry, having burned a few hundred calories doing so. This is why they encourage kids to bring things like banana chips or trail mix into AP exams in high school in the states. Regarding the purple sky, the blue also dominates because our sun's spectrum peaks in the yellow, being a class G star and all. This means it has a good deal more output in the blue than in the violet and ultraviolet. So though everything west of the green gets scattered all over the sky, there's more of the longer wavelengths to go around. Also, the scattering is to blame for the annoying effect of shade and even clouds blocking the sun not doing much to protect from sunburns. The UV gets scattered all over the sky like the rest of the higher frequencies, and so if you can see the blue of the sky, your face is getting hit with UV.

Here are my answers to the questions, just since no one ever asked me for my opinion. 1. This has only not worked for me once in about a year, and on other people I've told to do it once as well. Take a deep breath through your mouth and hold it. Swallow twice. Breath normally out your nose. If it doesn't work once, find some other home remedy-esque solution. 2. Drink a glass of chamomile tea before going to sleep, lay down to go to sleep at exactly 10:00 (Obviously with a margin of error), start sleeping on your left side, and be in a darkened room for around 15 minutes or more before sleeping. Melatonin production is increased the less light rhodopsin in your eyes (the protein responsible for detecting light in low-light environments) detects. If you're in a dark room for so long before sleeping, your body will produce the melatonin before you go to sleep, allowing you to get to sleep quicker. The dark room is simply a personal experience suggestion because when I'm up at or around 11:00, I just turn off all the lights in my house because the light genuinely aggravates me. As I turn off the lights, I get sleepier. 3. I have been told that you should drink half your weight in fluid ounces. For example, I weigh about 210 pounds, so I should be drinking about 105 fluid ounces per day. The numbers in the video somewhat match up to the video, but that would mean that an average woman's weight is 180 pounds, a value that I cannot verify. Additionally, that would mean the average man weighs 250 pounds, which doesn't sound too farfetched, but I'm not necessarily a professional in healthy weights for human beings. Hank says to drink when you're thirsty, and this is entirely founded. When your body has less than sufficient water, your body produces ADH, which is antidiuretic hormone. This hormone is pumped into the nephrons of your kidneys in order to make either the proximal collecting duct or the distal collecting duct (I can't remember which, the main difference is their location in the nephron) more permeable to water. It is also what makes you thirsty. It is also one of the few hormones that work in a positive feedback loop, meaning the more that there is the more that is produced. As you drink water, less ADH is produced, making the nephrons less determined to reabsorb more water. In short, drinking when you are thirsty is perfectly acceptable and more than acceptable to your kidneys. 4. Yup. When I wrestled in high school, I was coming home and nomming on more food than I had ever eaten in my life and still lost a load of weight. Practice was 5 days a week for 2 straight hours, and that was more than enough to use up a large portion of my energy reserves. 5. Not a whole lot I can add to this other than rainbows are pretty and the end of one is directly below you. Check out Vsauce for a better explanation. 6. Agape ~ Unconditional love, usually used to describe the love that God has for all of creation. I venture to say it can extend to the same love that a mother has for her children. Phillios ~ Brotherly love. It differs because when I tell my brother "I love you," it is a type of love I can easily follow up with "But I'm going to murder you if you ever eat Cheetos with a fork." Eros ~ Erotic love. (Hmm, wonder where the word erotic got its root from) Telling a spouse "I love you" is much different from telling a clergy member "You are loved here." TL:DR ~ An Internet guy tells everyone what he thinks the answers are to these questions using big words and long-winded explanations all because he likes to share what he knows with anyone and everyone. Stay tuned for the sequel.
I used to drink about 6-8 liters of water a day when I worked as a cable guy in Barstow, CA during the summer. That would still feel like not enough sometimes. Just for those that don't know, Barstow has weeks in a row during the summer where it would be 115+f/47c all day.
For me, the best way to cure hiccups isnt holding your breath. Its more holding your breath and tensing up like you are exhaling but not letting anything out. I had the hiccups for over a week straight and it was the only thing that fixed it. Anytime I get hiccups that won't go away now, I do this and it works every time.
I have a quick question, what takes doctors offices so long? Like if I have an appointment at 9am then I don’t get called back until 9:45 or like when I finally get back there and then have to wait 20 more minutes until the doctor actually shows up. What are they doing back there?
I seemed to be fine sleeping in light and seemed to only able to fall asleep watching certain RUclips videos these days. Coffee makes more sleepy than actually awake. While anything contains caffein aside from tea just give me minor headaches.
If I have even a cup of tea in the morning, I think that does make me feel less like going to bed at night presumably due to the caffeine. It's hard to believe it could have that much effect, but it seems like it.
I just hold my breath (and my diaphragm?) for 5-10 seconds and if it doesn't work the first time, just try again until it works. Takes one or two tries usually.
I often pull my pants down, and do the helicopter while shitting behind myself, when people scream in terror it’s usually such a high pitched sudden noise that i get jumpscared and... viola... Hiccups are gone
Most effective way to fall asleep I've found so far, is a trip to the dentists chair. No kidding, I had to keep myself awake last time because I constantly faded in and out of sleeping. I thought it would bother them if I did fall asleep. Turned out afterwards it wouldn't, so I'll definitely grab that chance next time, if I feel tired. They told me they already have a few patients who sleep while being operated on. I'm probably gonna end up joining that team tbh..
I get rid of hiccups by sipping water by pulling down on my ear. It creates a weird feeling in the back of my throat. Sometimes one ear doesn’t work and I have to do the other one. But it always works for me with one ear or the other
I'm really good at getting rid of hiccups! I just sit and focus for a minute and 95%+ of the time, theyre gone :) unfortunately sometimes I'm too lazy to do that and just let them happen for a while..... my dad is really good at it too, but I don't think I learned it from him because our methods are different...
My hiccup trick is to breath in until you can’t take in anymore air, then swallow until you can’t swallow anymore. Always works for me! And seems to mix both of those techniques
Vorlons ask: Who are you? Shadows ask: What do you want? Lorien asks: Why are you here, What do you have worth living for? Me; Why are you bothering me with questions?
I've successfully scared the hiccups out of two people in my life. The second one was the easiest and the best! My friend had the hiccups and also had a warrant out for his arrest. We were in the car and all I did was tell him the cops were behind us. He didn't find it funny, but it worked!
I have a technique for stopping hiccups which is fail-safe. Seriously, every time I came across a person with hiccups, I show them and it works 100% of the time and is yet to fail. I'd be happy to publish a video on the technique if there is enough interest.
5:02 That's untrue. The right hypnotics can easily knock you out for hours. Normally you don't sleep 19h but with a high dose of e.g. diazepam you can.
I have a fool proof way to stop the Hiccups. Breathe in and hold your breath for 5 seconds, then release and hold for another 5 seconds, repeat until they stop.
This is very interesting since the collection of questions may show that we all still battle these common issues and there hasn't been a trusted body that has informed the masses nor a body that is trusted...
Hey @SciShow could you please make a video about the heredity of hair color? In school i learned that the Gene for blond hair is recessive. So that if all four of my girlfriends grandparents, her parents and siblings are bright blond there is basically no chance for her to have dark brown hair(except for mutations...good luck with that). As you can imagine that sparked quite a discussion at the dinner table. German Wikipedia also claims that if both parents are blond they can not bring forth a child that is not blonde. After some more reading it became obvious to me that mendel’s rules do not apply since the genes for pigmentation are spread over multiple alleles. But how exactly does it work and why do prediction made with Mendel’s rules match so closely?!?
I found the only 100% way to stop the hickers here on the net . put a piece of paper towel over a glass of water . drink the water by pulling it through the towel . works every time .
The only thing that has ever stopped hiccups for me works 100% of the time. Swallow air like you're going to make yourself burp, then don't burp. Relax and hold your breath for a few counts, then breath normally. If you actually make yourself burp, just try again without burping. You're welcome!
Scaring myself, relaxing my diaphragm, drinking water, sugar, and several other methods have always helped me. However, years back, I had an experience where I hiccuped every seven seconds for three straight days. (3.25 days actually...)none of it worked.
Hiccup Solution: Large spoonful of peanut butter. So far has worked on everyone I know and works rather instantly. Don't know the science behind it but it works.
Stopping hiccups. This one works for other people. Ask someone with hiccups to "hiccup in my ear". Sounds funny, but I am serious. Be a little persistent because most people will say no. Ask that they trust you, and lean in. I don't remember where I learned this but it has worked for all but one of about 50 people. The one that it didn't work for was a sibling of mine. I personally think that it may work by embarrassment, and my sibling was not embarrassed to hiccup in my ear. I know that 50 is not a statistically significant number but it still is impressive. Let me know if it works for people who will give in to your request. Added: obviously this will be something you will ask of people that know you. I have never asked a stranger.
I'm an adult and up to no good. I'm in love with a color. Lately there has been major hiccups every time I tried to make out the rainbow's purple color. How much water do you think I'll need?
Thank you about water Consumption. I Sister and I disagree. She has a set number of glasses at your house after drink or ounces per day. Also she used to believe that you cannot become dehydrated and under 72 hrs. I had food poisoning once upon a time, I was hemorrhaging fluids move from my stomach I am the end point of digestion. I finally got him to take her to the emergency room, but Browning is cramping and I was having trouble focusing. Some three large bags of water and glucose, and several glasses of water later, my test came back I was hydrated and No longer throwing up or diarrhea. I tried to explain them and since it depends on where you are and what is going on and what you’re doing as to how much water you need to drink. Ie: Working outdoors in the summer in Florida, I drank a lot of water well over a gallon. I also took salt tablets. My clothes would be dusty white from sweat and salt. Moving to Arizona, I also required more water every day. However, in Missouri, I don’t need as much water every day when I’m not out side working and sweating. Are use as a clue as to whether or not I’m getting enough water, is the color of my urine with consideration of what I’ve been eating. Example if I eat a lot of beats i’m going to have red urine. As for calories, when I was working in Florida outside I ate around 3000 to 4000 cal a day I kept my weight at 125 -130. Normally when I’m not working sitting watching television, I burn about 1600 cal max a day. I’m fat, because when I was injured, and couldn’t work, I had trouble changing my diet to where I needed to be. I have lost over 100#, but I found it difficult to get down any lower. As I age I need less and less food. Adding to my difficulty.
*Someone on Scishow NEEDS to pin this* I found a way to get rid of hiccups and it works EVERY TIME! • *TAKE A SIP OF WATER* (DON'T DRINK IT YET) • *TILT YOUR HEAD BACK AND SWALLOW THE WATER*
Ive always found the easiest way to get rid of hiccups is to stop moving, jam your fingers into your diaphragm in that little notch thing under your sternum and breath deep and slow. . . Never failed me, but it may very well just be placebo that causes the change as im always 100% convinced that itll solve it within 10 seconds

Growing up my grandma always called hiccups "spontaneous combustion of the diaphragm" which doesn't have quite the same flow.

It differs because when I tell my brother "I love you," it is a type of love I can easily follow up with "But I'm going to murder you if you ever eat Cheetos with a fork."
Eros ~ Erotic love. (Hmm, wonder where the word erotic got its root from) Telling a spouse "I love you" is much different from telling a clergy member "You are loved here."
TL:DR ~ An Internet guy tells everyone what he thinks the answers are to these questions using big words and long-winded explanations all because he likes to share what he knows with anyone and everyone.
Great compilation! (even though I have seen all the videos in it)
For me, the best way to cure hiccups isnt holding your breath. Its more holding your breath and tensing up like you are exhaling but not letting anything out. I had the hiccups for over a week straight and it was the only thing that fixed it. Anytime I get hiccups that won't go away now, I do this and it works every time.
Ok but that’s HILARIOUS thinking about how people claimed that they weren’t sleeping when they actually were 😩
How appropriate that MICHAEL took the love question, because I love him 😍 ❤️
Excellent!

Can you please do an episode on how to have optimal health as we age, both in body and brain?
Why do I feel so vulnerable when my feet aren’t covered by my blanket at night? Is this proof of the boogie man?
I usually get rid of hiccups by forcing myself to burp.
I just hold my breath (and my diaphragm?) for 5-10 seconds and if it doesn't work the first time, just try again until it works. Takes one or two tries usually.
I often pull my pants down, and do the helicopter while shitting behind myself,
when people scream in terror it’s usually such a high pitched sudden noise that i get jumpscared and... viola... Hiccups are gone
I drink coffee. According to Google, coffee is supposed to cause hiccups, but whatever.
I fart it helps
@@WilliamSkafast But google isn't a source. So whatever google provided you with as the answer possibly came from a questionable source
"Tiny boot knocking". 😂😂😂
I get rid of hiccups by sipping water by pulling down on my ear. It creates a weird feeling in the back of my throat. Sometimes one ear doesn’t work and I have to do the other one. But it always works for me with one ear or the other
I'm really good at getting rid of hiccups! I just sit and focus for a minute and 95%+ of the time, theyre gone :)
unfortunately sometimes I'm too lazy to do that and just let them happen for a while.....
my dad is really good at it too, but I don't think I learned it from him because our methods are different...

I am watching this at midnight on my laptop!
I feel like a cucumber with anxiety.
I've successfully scared the hiccups out of two people in my life. The second one was the easiest and the best!
My friend had the hiccups and also had a warrant out for his arrest. We were in the car and all I did was tell him the cops were behind us. He didn't find it funny, but it worked!
Why is the sky blue? “There are a surprising number of elements” 10:43 I see what you did there... 😆 Ba-dun-tss
I have a technique for stopping hiccups which is fail-safe. Seriously, every time I came across a person with hiccups, I show them and it works 100% of the time and is yet to fail. I'd be happy to publish a video on the technique if there is enough interest.
Love is...in the eyes of beholder.
5:02 That's untrue. The right hypnotics can easily knock you out for hours. Normally you don't sleep 19h but with a high dose of e.g. diazepam you can.
1. Hiccups- taking 10 sips of water. 2. Sleep- if you can’t put your phone down use an app that blocks blue light that keeps you awake.
So the human brain is basically making it's own coke? Damn human body, you're amazing in both good and bad ways
I have a fool proof way to stop the Hiccups. Breathe in and hold your breath for 5 seconds, then release and hold for another 5 seconds, repeat until they stop.
One thing about hiccups is you don't want to chug the water as much as you want to keep a steady stream of it until the hiccups dissipate
This is very interesting since the collection of questions may show that we all still battle these common issues and there hasn't been a trusted body that has informed the masses nor a body that is trusted...
Oh man Im excited to try the [COURSE NAME] course on brilliant
Regarding hiccups, the phrenic nerve innervates the diaphragm, not the vagus nerve
"A brain on love looks a lot like a brain on cocaine" is a phrase I never thought I would hear.
3:40 Doesn't that mean reading keeps you awake aswell as you use light to be able to read?
meditation, and that's all...
Thanks sci show
Scaring myself, relaxing my diaphragm, drinking water, sugar, and several other methods have always helped me.
Lemons and bitters for lemon works idk why but it does
Few years back?FEW YEARS BACK!!!?
We can thank the Greeks for the heart being so important as they wear the first to place Intelligence as a key purpose for the heart.
*Someone on Scishow NEEDS to pin this* I found a way to get rid of hiccups and it works EVERY TIME!
• *TAKE A SIP OF WATER* (DON'T DRINK IT YET)
• *TILT YOUR HEAD BACK AND SWALLOW THE WATER*
Top 10 questions science *CAN* answer
Ive always found the easiest way to get rid of hiccups is to stop moving, jam your fingers into your diaphragm in that little notch thing under your sternum and breath deep and slow. . . Never failed me, but it may very well just be placebo that causes the change as im always 100% convinced that itll solve it within 10 seconds
Science: Hiccups are involuntary spasms of the diaphragm
Evolutionist: we hiccup because we used to be frogs lol
WE WANT MOAR
I am weird as hell. I just cant sleep without watch tv (Netflix, you got it) and the show must be interesting because if is not I can’t sleep either!
A man walked into a bar and asked for a glass of water. The barman reached under the bar fetching a shotgun pointing it at his face. Why Was The man thankful.
