I read somewhere that if a team is ahead, has the ball, with less than 40 seconds to go, with two downs, and the opponent has no timeouts, there is a 99.9% chance that the team with the ball will win. Miami decided to go for the 0.1%...and succeeded.

When Miami rolled out the Brinks truck for Mario, I warned them about Mario's lack of capacity to be a Head Coach at this level. I was attacked ad nauseum. As a Duck fan, I saw so often how Mario got completely outcoached. Then, I saw him make this very same boneheaded move against Stanford - exact same move, exact same result. Mario is a great guy, well meaning, great recruiter, but at this level, he can't compete with the coaches at elite levels. Not many can, but he certainly can't.

Oregon ran it on a 2nd & 3 with :57 seconds left, they could have easily also just taken a knee. It was just as bad as Miami's game on the weekend. What makes it worse is that Mario obviously didn't learn his lesson five years ago.

just watched that snippet of the game. that game was nowhere near as egregious as this. ball was snapped at 58 seconds of gameclock on 2nd & 3, but stanford had a timeout. that's the key part you left out. assuming a kneel down on 2nd instead of a run, stanford calls TO at around 56, and oregon takes another knee on 3rd, and runs off an additional 40 seconds. now it's 4th down and the clock is at around 15 seconds
in that specific situation, cristobal did the right thing by trying to pick up a 1st down on the oregon 40, when it was 2nd and 3 and possess the ball till the end. just unlucky on their part that they fumbled

Mike Riley did something similar his first year at Nebraska. Had a 6 point lead against Illinois with about a minute left, and it’s 3rd and short. Illinois out of timeouts. Terribly weather game too, wind was hitting over 30mph. He elects to throw on third down, instead of running or taking a knee. There would have been 20 seconds left, at most, if Nebraska ran and failed to pickup the first. Nebraska ends up punting, and Wes Lunt takes it down the field, scores the TD. Sometimes these coaches are too stubborn to get out of their own way.

If we had been up by enough and it happened, this would be forgotten. The entire game was out of kilter. Many say the refs were wrong on the fumble call. Yes--of course, it was totally unnecessary of Cristobal to make that call. But lots of weird things happen in college football, so I hope the team bands together to support each other and the coach. That is what we all want to see!

It doesn't matter the entire game was out of kilter! Despite TVD playing terrible and other blantant bad calls by the refs against Miami, they had the game in their hands by just kneeling on 3rd down. You don't put the ball in harms way! NFL HC and staffs have learned from the 1978 Miracle at the Meadowlands when Giants QB fumbled with a few seconds left and Eagles Herman Edwards picking up the ball and running the ball back for the TD and win. They don't f around during that time of the game. It doesn't matter if its a weird game or monkey are flying around, they kneel the ball in that situation every time.

Every NFL HC and staff young and old the last 30 plus years always kneel the ball in that situation every since the 1978 miracle at the Meadowlands. It filters its way down to college, HS and pop warner. Its clear, Mario doesn't get it! This is twice in 5 years. Its like he knows something, everybody else doesn't know!

TVD or the Players couldn't have stopped that decision not to kneel. Because Mario runs it llke a KGB agent. He's paranoid of the media and players ability to communicate. Remember come get your son?
He doesn't take responsibility. He still hasn't after a second time answering for his decision. He scrambled the brains of his players. He should have and could have kneeled the prior play and still ran out the clock.
After meeting on the sideline. They were under his total control with no hint of kneeling.
It's Absolutely stunning. He put them in State of Robotic Denial. It was stunning.
    On two plays.
They probably thought they were dreaming, an out of body experience from a self-preservation Coach.

Mario is who Mario is and if he hasn’t fixed his issues by now it’ll never get fixed. He is a great recruiter & a good guy, and a great OLine coach. He is absolutely horrible when it comes to in game coaching, making adjustments as the game goes on, not willing to allow his OC’s implement their kind of offense because he’s got that OLine mentality of wanting to just run it down the throat of the defense. He had Justin Herbert for 2 years & refused to use his arm talent properly because again he wanted a ground and pound offense. He just refuses to check his own ego & allow those around him to do their jobs. I give him 2 more years max at Miami before they finally realize he’s an avg at best HC & fire him. But hey, we tried to warn Miami fans of what they were getting in Mario & all they said was duck fans are just jealous & salty lol. I guess they’re starting to see what we tried telling them 2 years ago 🤷‍♂️😂
