Will Mario Cristobal recover from Miami’s 23-20 loss to Georgia Tech? | The Joel Klatt Show
• Will Mario Cristobal r...
I feel bad for those Miami players. Joel said it perfectly. Got some rebuilding to do in that locker room. Just crazy. I'm glad this is sending recruits to Oregon lol, but I feel bad it had to be like this.
It's going to send recruits to my Noles 😊😊😊😊
I read somewhere that if a team is ahead, has the ball, with less than 40 seconds to go, with two downs, and the opponent has no timeouts, there is a 99.9% chance that the team with the ball will win. Miami decided to go for the 0.1%...and succeeded.
Good one 👍
I think the odds are actually worse than that. By worse, I mean much higher in the favor that GT would lose.
Joe Pisarcik would be proud of Mario. :)
Agree 💯! Tyler should have told the OC or Mario to go f them with that stupid call and run the victory formation. I am hurt man
i am laughing,, as i turned the TV to another program , knowing the V formation was the LAST play,,as this game was over and GT played a very good game.. little later I knew the post game score wasin error
1st. Didn't take a knee. 2nd. Miami allowed GT receivers to get behind them.
When Miami rolled out the Brinks truck for Mario, I warned them about Mario's lack of capacity to be a Head Coach at this level. I was attacked ad nauseum. As a Duck fan, I saw so often how Mario got completely outcoached. Then, I saw him make this very same boneheaded move against Stanford - exact same move, exact same result. Mario is a great guy, well meaning, great recruiter, but at this level, he can't compete with the coaches at elite levels. Not many can, but he certainly can't.
Win a championship bro you ducks fans are the worst
Cristobal is an amazing recruiter, and every bit the game coach he was at Oregon
What makes things worse is Cristobal had the audacity not to admit to his mistake. In the post game press conference dude decided to address the running back “not being good enough to keep two hands on the ball.” So wrong…
Fire Cristobal. Worst coach in the league.
He's not wrong
@@chrisaustin22 Running back shouldn’t have been put in that situation to begin with. Still 100% Cristobal’s fault.
No one is going to fire him for that.
That’s not a quote from his press conference
You just made that whole quote up…shutup
Mario actually called time out before a kickoff. His first game acting as head coach at Oregon.
Lol that’s amazing
😂😂😂😂
Did it against auburn in 2019 too. I was like really dude? First play of the SEASON? And you call a time out?
@@FlawlessKam I am a WVU fan and 2 years ago they got almost got a delay of game on the first play of the game but took a timeout instead ..at the 15:00 mark in the first quarter lol
Head Couch has a fiduciary duty to make sure the team wins.
You still allowed Ga tech to go down the field with 20 seconds and no timeout and score while your in cover 3 thanks for not mentioning that
Defense was in shambles after that error.
they were obviously shocked and stunned
I Don't think they were expecting to come on the field with 1 minute left
This happened to him at Oregon when he played Stanford… Different team, same Cristobal…
Didn’t watch the video, huh?
@@mikeverkest Klatt is a clown those two games are extremely similar for cristobal Klatt doesn’t know what he’s talking about
@@Datníğğa123he literally said it was similar but not the exact same and then actually explained the scenario. Klatt is completely right 😂
@@kizitokatende412 exactly
u didn't watch the video
Miami Hurricanes have lost 7 straight games, coming off a BYE Week… based on that logic, there’s no reason to believe they’ll avoid the letdown after another deflating loss
Seeing as how they always have a season ending letdown after losses like this
The bye week was after playing highly mighty talented TEMPLE lol
Meanwhile, Cristobal is sleeping soundly on top of his pile of money!
So true about the Arizona decision not to go for two. With the overtime short fields huge advantage Caleb Williams. I said the game was over when they kicked the extra point in the 1st overtime. Great analysis of the Miami debacle!
I said and posted the same thing on Arizona's football fackbook page.
Miami ad should have fired Cristobal after that game.
Oregon ran it on a 2nd & 3 with :57 seconds left, they could have easily also just taken a knee. It was just as bad as Miami's game on the weekend. What makes it worse is that Mario obviously didn't learn his lesson five years ago.
just watched that snippet of the game. that game was nowhere near as egregious as this. ball was snapped at 58 seconds of gameclock on 2nd & 3, but stanford had a timeout. that's the key part you left out. assuming a kneel down on 2nd instead of a run, stanford calls TO at around 56, and oregon takes another knee on 3rd, and runs off an additional 40 seconds. now it's 4th down and the clock is at around 15 seconds
in that specific situation, cristobal did the right thing by trying to pick up a 1st down on the oregon 40, when it was 2nd and 3 and possess the ball till the end. just unlucky on their part that they fumbled
ruclips.net/video/J0F7ZOPjWVU/видео.html
Not :57 seconds, 57 seconds. :57 seconds is actually a little over a half a second.
Stop being ignorant, Oregon could not kneel and would have had to punt and potentially give Stanford another play on offense. Watch the game again, look at the time AND notice the timeouts situation. Take a seat.
@@kmir224 If Herbert takes a knee on 2nd there would've been about 55 secs left when Stanford used its final TO. Take a knee on 3rd and there's 15 secs on the clock when Mario calls TO with 1 sec left. Punt and Stanford takes over at their own 20ish with 10 seconds and no TOs. If I'm Oregon, I like my chances.
@@aloha_uehara if you like your chances, awesome. All I'm saying is that the majority of teams would run the ball on 2nd and 3 if the other team had a TO. However, the decision to run the ball under 40 seconds when GT had no TOs is egregious, unconsciable, and undenfendable. You simply CANNOT do anything but take a knee, and ensure victory. Anything else, and you risk losing, which is what happened
2:30 I’ve heard multiple national people say Miami has not been in victory formation and kneeled it a single time all season and it’s not like they didn’t have a chance to kneel 8t they were undefeated until 1 second left in the game last Saturday
Terrible call to even put the ball in harm’s way but the runner was 1000000% down. Maybe the ref wanted to punish Mario for running the ball 😂
@@jerryjessup9192 absolutely false. Did you even see what happened? The defender CLEARLY rakes the ball well after his elbow touches the ground. It’s not even remotely close.
@@jerryjessup9192 the angles they showed during the game made it 90/10 that he had the ball. The angles they’ve shown since then are indisputable. ESPN has a sky cam angle that clearly, indisputably shows him going all the way to the ground with complete control, a rake AFTER he’s down, and then the ball coming loose. It was a terrible call.
Down or not why was GT even in the game. Typical Mario playing down to competition, running a vanilla, 1980’s offense. You guys wanted him bad, you got him. Thank you from Duck fans everywhere.
@@mollyclum2302 we’re literally running an air raid now. You clowns sound like bitter ex girlfriends because your school is getting treated like a mid major for coaches looking to move up in the ranks. Every loss you come out of the woods to gloat, and then when he wins you lose internet access. It’s pathetic, and you should be embarrassed to be so petty and revisionist. Mario built Oregon into a relevant program after they’d slipped for years, and then he went to another program that he viewed as a better destination. Get over yourselves and stop stalking every single piece of Hurricane news insisting you’re *so* happy he’s gone when your behavior telegraphs hurt pride and desperation for spin.
Even with the atrocious decision, it looked to me that the runner's elbow was clearly down before he fumbled. :\ I can't understand why the ruling of a fumble wasn't overturned.
If we scrutinize the refs calls too much they'll end up being lawyers up and down the sideline judicating the review procedure , it's long enough as is
is that what you took from this? miami should have never even been in a close contest with a ga tech team that got routed by bowling green last week lmao
Take a knee, game over. Doesn't matter what the refs think, they allowed themselves to be in that position
@@MrChillguy7you know the snap is eligible to be fumbled right?

Not one OUNCE of credit to GT not giving up. NOBODY would be talking about this if GT didn’t capitalized off it
His elbow was down and Miami played horrible all game
Well Miami losing is the bigger story that's social media for you 🤷
Referees hate us and we did NOTHING to deserve a win. NOTHING. Coaches and Players FAILED horribly. Officials always hate on us it's nothing new. But not taking a knee RUINED the season and recruiting in one night.@@madeindade3052
The story is that it was one of the worst coaching mistakes ever. A sure win if they take a knee. GT capitalizing is the karma part. Good for them.
“Didn’t capitalized”, good Lord. English major, were you?
I haven't heard the coach take full responsibility for it . He is sharing the blame with his players. Bad move. Those Young men aren't to blame. UNC don't care , they gonna beat Miami ! Then what ? Ugly
Sharing the blame?! To me he's passing it off!! Throwing them under the bus!!
Some people never learn. Look at the Dodgers with Kershaw. They have put their trust in him literally every single year since 2013 and every single year since 2013 he massively lets the ownership and management down. Hopefully Cristobal learns from this but considering he has a history of this I doubt he will
Yea my son told me that they game him the ball first game and I was like what are the dodgers doing!! Yes he did good one year and they won the World Series but there offense was incredible but what has he done before that and after in the playoffs nothing!!!
Mike Riley did something similar his first year at Nebraska. Had a 6 point lead against Illinois with about a minute left, and it’s 3rd and short. Illinois out of timeouts. Terribly weather game too, wind was hitting over 30mph. He elects to throw on third down, instead of running or taking a knee. There would have been 20 seconds left, at most, if Nebraska ran and failed to pickup the first. Nebraska ends up punting, and Wes Lunt takes it down the field, scores the TD. Sometimes these coaches are too stubborn to get out of their own way.
If he gets fired, I hope they hire Prime. Prime and Miami would be perfect.
Ain't gonna happen, he's FSU period!
Miami spent hundred million dollars for this Buffon???
Keep on spending can’ts 😂😂😂😂
Notre Dame did the same thing on their final possession against Duke, but they didn’t fumble. Still a coaching mistake.
Those kids deserved better.....
Yeah
Worst coaching decision ever??
Miami can't afford to pay a recruiter 8 million dollars. Because that's what he is good at. He did the same thing in a Standford Oregon game. Make our OC head Coach !
Klatt - You saying the QB should have overruled Mario’s call …. You don’t overrule Mario. He overruled his OC at Oregon regularly. The only person able to stop Justin Herbert when he was QB at Oregon was the offensive “genius” of Mario Cristobal. Mario, great recruiter but I’d rather have a kid who’s good at Madden and the x-box calling plays.
Let’s see if he can rally this team. Because every year they start off great then a game like this happens and the entire season is on a downward spiral. Coming up are: NC, Clemson, FSU & Louisville. Good luck. (Sarcasm)
Miami is done. Stick a sharp fork in them. You just do NOT recover from something like this.
I was NFL bound until them Sebring Lightning bolt boys took out my knees in the Heartland Championship game of the 7th grade Junior high school round of 64 in 1997. Them good ole days as the running back for them Hardee Junior High Wildcats.
The fact that he had that happen 5 years ago when it wasn't as egregious, makes this one an even MORE egregious error. When I was watching game highlights, I could not believe what I was seeing. I've been watching college football since the '70s and have never seen anything like this. It always irks me when coaches, who get paid millions, make simple errors like this that cost their players a game. I agree this is a sure-fire way to lose your team.
The Miami QB absolutely should have refused to carry out that play. Everyone, including Cristobal, would've thanked him later.
The entire clowns on the defensive staff need to be fire. Unbelievable
YES ,FIRE THEM ALL😆😆
Defensive staff shouldn’t have even been in position to play defense again.
Not just the so called fumble, they should have taken a time out and st their defense before or after the TC debacle
Joel played in different era, quarterbacks have absolutely no authority to veto the head coach nowadays.
The Miami coach does something like this every year. And he throws the players under the bus
Miami head coach definitely lost some players and staff on that call. Uphill battle going into their next game to get that confidence back. Especially seeing how they were undefeated and ranked.
Best post yet. This is the real problem now for the canes
Still seems like no one talks about Chaney being down. Error by the refs......
Honestly, who cares. When the game was won and stupidly put at risk for...I guess stat padding, and you put the game in the hands of the refs, expect them to make a questionable or wrong call. I'd consider it a fitting punishment for that play call.
Take the knee that doesn't happen game over talk about that
@@dupreehundo Thank you. 👍🏾👍🏾
It’s not just Cristobal. There are coaches that make $5 million + a year that make bafflingly stupid clock management decisions EVERY week!! Dabo, ryan day, james franklin, brian kelly, etc.
I thought all coaches know to take a knee when in control. Didn't we learn that for all time after the Eagles and Giants ending?
😂What are they teaching college quarterbacks? NIL.
Agree the QB should be more aware, not to mention the OC
Once the game is under 2:00 min u kneel and walk out
And isn’t it MIND-BOGGLING that someone making 6 or 7 million dollars a year DOESNT KNOW THAT!!
Why is the media purposely ignoring the fact that the RB Don Chaney didn’t fumble?.. and it was clearly visible in review that he was done before the ball was stripped out. Which means the Refs blew the call after replay and cost the game??
Exactly correct. His elbow was down before the ball was stripped it really wasn't even close.
Whilst you’re completely right, the reason everyone is up in arms is because the poor kid shouldn’t have been in that play to begin with. Cristobal should have called for a knee to be taken and he didn’t, dude is solely responsible for this loss.
You are absolutely correct!!! I've heard that the head ref was from Atlanta, GA. 🤔
I rock with Coach Prime and I will say this referring overall has been horrendous. That said dont let the refs have the ability to decide a game
It wasn't clearly visible, that's precisely why the call on the field stood- there was no angle showing the elbow and where the ball was at the same time. If it had been called a non-fumble on the field it would have stood as well for the same reason, no clear angle.
Yeah and the icing on the cake is that there were a lot of recruits at Hard Rock that night watching Mario convince them to not come play at Miami. We’re seeing a program that once was the most dominant in the land, struggle to get out of its own way. It’s pitiful.
Cristobal will be closely scrutinized for the rest of his tenure at Miami. He should be secretly investigated for gambling now that this has happened for the second time at two different schools.
If we had been up by enough and it happened, this would be forgotten. The entire game was out of kilter. Many say the refs were wrong on the fumble call. Yes--of course, it was totally unnecessary of Cristobal to make that call. But lots of weird things happen in college football, so I hope the team bands together to support each other and the coach. That is what we all want to see!
It doesn't matter the entire game was out of kilter! Despite TVD playing terrible and other blantant bad calls by the refs against Miami, they had the game in their hands by just kneeling on 3rd down. You don't put the ball in harms way! NFL HC and staffs have learned from the 1978 Miracle at the Meadowlands when Giants QB fumbled with a few seconds left and Eagles Herman Edwards picking up the ball and running the ball back for the TD and win. They don't f around during that time of the game. It doesn't matter if its a weird game or monkey are flying around, they kneel the ball in that situation every time.
Pete Carroll is happy we can now move on from what WAS the worst play call ever.
The prevent defense was the real killer. It’s been loosing big games for years. I don’t understand why coaches go away from has been working the rest of the game.
Georgia Tech going to get some bulldogs this year! Epic win for the Yellow Jackets! GO BLUE!!!
Now that was a good win, if you want to call it that but don't go talking crazy 😅😅😅😅😅😅
@kaydee2126 Really? Did you not watch the SC & Auburn game's?
Ah, no your not
Don't exaggerate. Y'all are years behind UGA😅😂
He’s lost that team. No way those kids are going to buy into that complete incompetence. Plus he tossed that poor kid under the bus at his press conference. I’m seriously expecting multiple transfers.
Mass exodus. Watch.
@salaamhall3343 when he left Oregon word was that there was massive amounts of discontented players in the locker room since he had us obliterated twice by Utah with the same game plan and had lost to Stanford after beating Ohio State that season.
There was about to be a massive exodus but then Miami backed up the Brinks truck and we brought in a huge upgrade in Dan Lanning. I think you're probably right about a massive exodus coming.

How dare you question the decision making of our Coach.
He is going to have to beat NC to overcome that one. I am pretty critical but I am not going to ask for him to be fired. Its a learning process. Just have to get beyond it and not do it again.
Nothing will over come his stupidity as a head coach, due to the same mistake twice,,over paid, he should use his$$$ to help homeless VETS
Make sure Miami keeps him😂😂😂😂😂😂
If he didn't learn from doing it in 2018 at Oregon when is he going to learn! Every NFL HC and staff young and old the last 30 plus years always kneel the ball in that situation every since the 1978 miracle at the Meadowlands. It filters its way down to college, HS and pop warner. Its clear, Mario doesn't get it! This is twice in 5 years. Its like he knows something, everybody else doesn't know!
And yet no one, including the players, did not realize this?
TVD or the Players couldn't have stopped that decision not to kneel. Because Mario runs it llke a KGB agent. He's paranoid of the media and players ability to communicate. Remember come get your son?
He doesn't take responsibility. He still hasn't after a second time answering for his decision. He scrambled the brains of his players. He should have and could have kneeled the prior play and still ran out the clock.
After meeting on the sideline. They were under his total control with no hint of kneeling.
It's Absolutely stunning. He put them in State of Robotic Denial. It was stunning.
On two plays.
They probably thought they were dreaming, an out of body experience from a self-preservation Coach.
This is exactly why linemen SHOULD NOT be HC's
WRONG:it wasn’t fumbled, it was stripped, big difference but same outcome. How the defense let the receiver get behind them is unbelievable… but I loved it😝
on the stat sheet, it counts as a fumble (more accurately, fumbles lost)
Stripped ball = fumble (in many if not most cases). As for the defense letting Leary get behind them...as egregious as that was, it should never have come to that.
Mario is who Mario is and if he hasn’t fixed his issues by now it’ll never get fixed. He is a great recruiter & a good guy, and a great OLine coach. He is absolutely horrible when it comes to in game coaching, making adjustments as the game goes on, not willing to allow his OC’s implement their kind of offense because he’s got that OLine mentality of wanting to just run it down the throat of the defense. He had Justin Herbert for 2 years & refused to use his arm talent properly because again he wanted a ground and pound offense. He just refuses to check his own ego & allow those around him to do their jobs. I give him 2 more years max at Miami before they finally realize he’s an avg at best HC & fire him. But hey, we tried to warn Miami fans of what they were getting in Mario & all they said was duck fans are just jealous & salty lol. I guess they’re starting to see what we tried telling them 2 years ago 🤷♂️😂
He is a good recruiter and for Miami. That is good enough.
A program like Miami is expected to compete for championships
@@thefranchise4698 Miami needs to win an ACC championship first or at least play in one. When did that last happen?
This take is filled with reddit info and a mix of cowherd influence. Interesting Klatt
"what in the world?" 🤣🤣🤣
They were trying to get Don Chaney the running back to 100 yards rushing.
Well, I guess they accomplished that, because going into that play he had 99 yards, and it appeared he picked up at least 4 yards before he fumbled.
It’s not that big of a deal…it will all forgotten in time, you can also fumble the snap if your taking a knee just as easy it’s happening many many times before
Took a knee in the Rose Bowl with Herbert.
Go Jackets!
Maybe Mario bros should focus on the quality of play instead of dropping bags...
I can’t. I’ve been trying to figure what would make that play necessary and I keep coming back to corruption. What HC makes that call and then not explain it as “I fkd up”
Way to lose your team. Them boys headed for CO
Hes not a great recruiter the Big Money NIL people in Miami are recruting these players, just like in Oregon bigmoney Nike money got players there
No! He is a great recruiter! Don't lie! Also, don't compare Oregon and Miami! Miami has South Florida as is recruiting base then the rest of the Florida, regionally and nationally! Miami the last 60 to 70 years has been a national recruiter!
It's ingrained in college games to run up the score. The coach wanted more points for a better BCS ranking. Jokes on him.

He also said two hands on the ball😂
Cristobal is the current version of Ron Zook. Great recruiter and terrible coach.

Likely $60M reasons why.
My guess is he was trying to show up Georgia Tech.
Yeah it would be hard looking Mario in the face after that. Best thing he could do is win the next 2 and all would be forgiven.
Maybe Miami should fire him for Urban or Deion
And a thing with Mario Cristobal he didn’t take accountability first he deflected blamed his players first, and then said the coaches have to be better too that’s him in a nutshell. 😂
Also the offense of coordinator who came from Houston is a silly rabbit but I say again if that would have been an African American who was the offensive coordinator he would be let go
Cristobal is only good for recruiting. He needs to let his coordinators handle the coaching.
Oregon and Oklahoma are both better off now that they've moved on from their (overrated) exes.
So yeah, it was a bonehead decision by coach Mario, but Miami's defense had an opportunity to stop GT on the last drive and didn't. Don't let Miami's defense off the hook.
