  • In this video we take a look at The Dreadnaught Factor for the Atari 5200, which was ported by Activision back in 1984. The original version was done for the Intellivision in 1983 and the idea is credited to Tom Loughry. It was also ported to the Atari 8 bit line of computers. But the big question in this video is: does Dreadnaught Factor hold up? Is it still worth playing? Or should you avoid this Stary Destroyer of a game at all costs? Lets find out!
I rate games on a scale of 1-5 and here is what each scores means!
5 out of 5 is PERFECT! These are rare games that everybody needs to experience for themselves!
4 out of 5 is Great! This game is well worth a look and a purchase.
3 out of 5 is Good. These games are flawed but most people should enjoy them.
2 out of 5 is Bad. These games are VERY flawed and very few people will want to spend time with them.
1 out of 5 is GARBAGE! Everybody needs to avoid these hot piles at all costs!
I also occasionally review peripherals and other pieces of hardware. I rank these as being Recommended, Not Recommended or Undecided. These ratings should be self explanatory...

    1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
    2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
    3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

The ship is supposed to look like the Buck Rogers starfighters we saw every week on TV just a few years prior to this game.

Thanks for clarifying because it just looked weird to me. I'm not familiar with the buck rodgers TV show so it makes sense I wouldn't recognize it.

Dude if you took dreadnaught factor and that intellivision game that has you doing the trench run and the 2600 empire strikes back all on one cartridge it would make the perfect sci-fi game!😮😮😮

I think it is a great game. The 5200 is an incredibly underrated system. Space Dungeon and Robotron 2084 are probably my favorites but there are several great games that get overlooked.

I recently got a second stock controller so I could play space dungeon! It's an incredible game I'm really enjoying that one too! I agree, the 5200 doesn't get enough love

Good review. Enjoyed this game on the Atari 8-bit computers. I think a 7800 version would be great to have.

Funny you should mention that. It's a game inspired from another game but it's still a similar idea and premise and it's being worked on for the 7800. Dreadnought Assault!

I must admit that I did daydream about flying a spaceship, but more so it was the Millennium Falcon. My brother and I also would get sticks out of the woods to fashion into light sabers. As far as the game goes, it definitely looks solid.

I had this on Atari 800 computer and it was one of my favorites. The sounds the graphics all the same but played it with an 2600 joystick. I assume that it plays better with 2600 joysticks over the 5200 version. Never got to play it on 5200 so not sure. As a kid I remember going to Sears and playing Pac-Man on the 5200 and I hated the controls, not having a self centering joystick makes most games hard to play.

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  3 месяца назад +1

I didn't think the controls were all that bad on this one with the stock controller, but there are definitely games that suffer from that thing. But there are a lot of great solutions out there today for aftermarket controllers.

Love The Dreadnaught Factor for the 5200. Great game that I would give at least a 4 and a half, maybe even a five.

Great review and insights, Jon. I have yet to play it and somehow ended up with two copies for the 5200. Is it a generational thing? Who hasn’t day dreamed about strafing and bombing a capital space ship? I grew up with plenty of shows and movies that featured such giant ships from Star Wars to Battlestar Galactica.

That's one of the biggest complaints. Personally I like it but I can see it being half of a full game. Like there should be something else to it. But overall it's fun and I really like it

I did find two homebrew sequels on the 8-bit featuring new ship designs which were also fun to try out.
