Is CREATINE Worth The Hype?

- Creatine is a popular dietary supplement that is commonly used by athletes and fitness enthusiasts to improve physical performance, build muscle mass, and enhance recovery. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound that is found in small amounts in meat and fish, but can also be produced by the body.
When taken as a supplement, creatine has been shown to increase the amount of creatine stored in the muscles, which can help to improve performance during high-intensity exercise, such as weightlifting and sprinting. Creatine supplementation has also been shown to increase muscle size and strength, as well as improve endurance and reduce fatigue.
One of the main benefits of creatine is that it can help to improve recovery time between bouts of exercise. This is particularly beneficial for athletes who engage in multiple bouts of high-intensity exercise over a short period of time. Creatine supplementation has been shown to reduce muscle damage and inflammation, which can help to speed up the recovery process and allow athletes to perform at a higher level for longer periods of time.
Other potential benefits of creatine supplementation include improved cognitive function, reduced risk of injury, and enhanced overall health and well-being. While there are some potential side effects associated with creatine supplementation, such as dehydration and gastrointestinal issues, these are generally mild and can be avoided by following proper dosing and hydration protocols. Overall, creatine is a safe and effective supplement that can provide a range of benefits for athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. The latest research on creatine has confirmed many of its well-known benefits, such as improved strength, power, and endurance during exercise.
Additionally, recent studies suggest that creatine supplementation may also have neuroprotective effects, as it has been shown to improve cognitive function in certain populations, such as older adults and vegetarians. Moreover, some research indicates that creatine may be beneficial for individuals with certain medical conditions, including Parkinson's disease, depression, and traumatic brain injury. Overall, while more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of creatine supplementation, the current evidence suggests that it is a safe and effective dietary supplement that can provide a range of benefits for both athletes and non-athletes alike.

Such a refreshing take. Simplified, fun and informative. I am liking the emergence of no BS fitness channels in the last few years.
I’ve lost 4 stone in 6 months whilst maintaining muscle mass, it’s been a slow process but adding creatine has definitely improved my training performance. I train 3 full body workout days a week and keep my step count up and after 4/5 months it became tough especially as the weight came off me, added creatine to my diet and I genuinely have not looked back. Also a very cheap white powder which is not something you can often say.
Well done 👍!! How many calories and protein grams do you take? I’d like to lose weight like that … it doesn’t sound slow at all!
I've lost about 3 stone doing nothing but running, no creatine, no weight training, no protein shakes. Bodyfat down to 12% body muscle % UP from 44% to 47%
I've no doubt at all that a little bit of muscle has gone, but a tiny fraction compared to the fat that's gone.
Net result is a higher portion of my mass being both muscle and water (water up from 56% to 59.5%)
Yes, I'm totally aware these numbers add up to more than 100% and no, I don't know why my composition scales do that.

Mate can I just thank you. Been a watcher for a while but this video has finally made me go for creatine. Like you said, it just looked to good to be true with the price and was worried about the possible bloating effects. Thanks for doing a well informed video on it mate
I am 50 and have used creatine on and off over the years. But just recently I have started taking the tablets routinely every day. I can see and feel a vast improvement in energy levels. My gym training sessions are better resulting in muscle growth which I was struggling with prior to using Creatine daily.
Great video.
Straight the point and made it simple for a beginner to understand! Love it.
Love your blunt, honest information presented in a humorous, modest manner.
I'm 57, 6,1 82KGs have been lifting for two years now. Been on creatine for about 2 months now. I didn't expect much. However, this week I dumbbell-pressed 30KGs (60KGs) 9 reps. I've noticed a considerable increase in a few weeks. 1 month ago 3 reps then 5 reps and now 9 good reps. If you had told me 2 years ago I would dumbbell press this weight I would have laughed. I also did 50 proper pull-ups from a complete drop. 10 x 8 x7 x 5 x 5 x 5 till 50. Before Xmas and my COVID I could barely get do 3 (it was COVID, that destroyed my gains). I will never stop taking it along with protein. But that's it, I don't bother with any other supplements. I hope this helps other older guys... Thanks to James for the straight talk.
You can even drop the protein if your diet is good enough but then again it's a very convenient and cheap source of protein
I am so happy I found your channel. Everything you say and explain is already well known information(from Creatine to Clenbuterol)… but I love the way you are breaking it down and really hope that many people, especially youngsters who are so easy influencing will find your channel and will not only learn but will start to show some critical thinking. I noticed improvements in and out of the gym about 3 weeks after starting creatine. Feel more energized daily, less rest between sets and more muscular endurance, and lifting heavier than ever. I noticed I got a bigger pump at the gym as my arms stopped fitting into certain shirts after a few high volume bicep / tricep exercises. Hitting new pr's every session consistently.

Loving the content and the honest no bs approach to the delivery and simple matter of fact dialogue. On creatine use I am a normal chap who likes working out and exercising and when I’m not chilling I’m at work Monday to Saturday so I class my self as a normal joe. I have used creative for the past 4 weeks and I stick to 5 and a bit grams once a day and I want to say i feel it has helped but if it hasn’t and it’s a placebo as you pointed out I am happy with that as the bag costs around £30 and last ages. I have made sure I drink plenty of fluids as I gather with the muscles holding more water the last thing I need is to dehydrate and get head aches. Again thanks for keeping the content coming. Cheers fella
what i havent seen anyone else talk about and it made me happy to see you say it is the upset stomach. when i was loading up on creatine with those 5 a day 5mg each, i accidently took 10mg 5 times a day for 5 days... i thought that the scoop was 5g flat so i took 5 scoops, it wassent until 3 days after the loading phase was done that i weighed it and it was 10g. for that week i couldnt trust a fart or any thing that would shake my stomach, i shit myself 3 times by just walking and multiple times by farting. it was the worst week of my life

Loved the video and the simple-to-understand route that you take to explain things absolutely brilliant James. I have been taking it for about 4 months and haven't noticed any gains or changes yet. I will continue taking it for hopefully cognitive benefits and hope I see improvement elsewhere.
I took creatine years ago (in my 30s) and it helped me get more buff than I was in my 20s. I've recently started training again and due to high blood pressure, it took me a little longer to get back into a good physical state. I then started to use creatine again and it paid off very quickly. Lots more stamina and I feel I can push myself a lot more. I feel it's probably even more of a benefit now, compared to when I was in my 30s, as I'm not only older but also vegetarian. I feel people that have a vegan/vegetarian diet should be made aware that without the natural creatine within meat products, taking the powder is probably going to bridge a huge gap.
When do you take it before a work out?
@@wolvezy yes. As I want to be well hydrated before going to the gym, I aim to drink it with my water. Easier to remember to have it that way. If it's a day I'm not going, I'll just take it before bed (i work out after dinner, at night) so it's generally the same time each day.
@@Darkelan ok thanks

Hands down my favourite channel
Awesome, to the point and no bullshit. Thanks.
I would love to take creatine but unfortunately my body didn't react well to it. I've only got one fully working kidney (the other one is like half), and they did not process it well. It increased my creatinine levels significantly (which is a chemical waste product from creatine). This caused my 1.5 kidneys to work in overdrive. Which then in turn caused me to get some serious illnesses that are normally very uncommon to get. So based on my experience if you have had any kidney issues in the past I would suggest not to take creatine. Great video though, love your work Jimmy!
+1
Just had a scan for my kidneys so I stopped taking creating. Waiting to hear results back now🥲
Good advice. I've had kidney issues and found that creatine caused peripheral edema (feet and ankles)
Same here, I still have both of them but I too had to stop taking creatine cause my bloodwork showed kidneydamage. It was not alarming but it WAS caused by the creatine. It is indeed not for everyone. Also stopped taking protein shakes. Liver and kidneys do not like them. I realised it is all just a money bussiness and you don't realy need all that sh*t to build muscle 💪
@@instrumentaldude8349 Creatine shows up as excess in your blood work so it’s important to let your doctor know if you’re taking it so that they can assess you better
I've only had a positive experience with creatine even though I was skeptical at the beginning. Many years ago I was competing at a high level in sports and my body didn't look like it at all. However, once some of my friends got on it, after only 2-3 months they started looking great. Once I got on it, I reached my peak physical form at that point within 6-9 months and felt like I could flip a truck :D The one and only ''down side'' to it is that you are going to have to drink a lot of water, but if you are already good with it, there is no reason why you shouldn't take it.

Based on personal experience, I kinda recommend you do cycle it, mostly to compare muscle growth and performance. Once I got into creatine, I would go months taking it daily, then getting 1~2 months without it. The noticed difference made me stop taking it entirely. Fatigue levels were the same (but I'm 25, so...), but my Prs started growing consecutively, and muscle growth too. My body most likely starts inhibiting creatine production when presented in high levels, case of supplementation. So, money to waste, in my case.
That's why I recommend to cycle it.
Yeah bro im 23 and cycle my creatine as well I've had a 30 serving bottle last me about 2 months and I know for a fact i push my body to the limit and it still holds up, especially on a leg day. right now im trying to shred my bulk and then I'll finish tjis bottle of creatine to put on a bit more muscle after my cutting stage.
Started taking it just over a month ago. Weightlift 2x per week, boxing 1x per week, running 5k 3x per week. No change to that program throughout and I’ve gained a pound of muscle & increased all my lifts. Had to really experiment with when to take it. Before bed upsets my stomach the least. Recovery is faster which means I can push it a bit more in each session. Very happy with creatine & keeping it a part of my daily routine. I did not do a loading phase at all and so I didn’t notice anything for around 3 weeks so all the gains have suddenly popped up in the past week.
Does it upset your stomach even without the loading phase?
@@nolimit29nah, I did 25g a day for a week for the loading phase and it never upset my stomach. Nobody I know has said they felt ill from it.
@@nolimit29I loaded up with 10g a day for my first time on creatine, I had 10g a day for about 2 weeks then down to 5g, no issues other then a few more trips to the toilet a day hah

i’ve taken creatine on and off for a couple years now and i’ve only ever experienced the positives. i loaded creatine for 7 days, taking 20g, and didn’t experience any stomach issues. i’m 6’3 and 95kg so experimented with 10g a day for a couple months, didn’t notice a dramatic difference between 5g and 10g, other than looking fuller, i have since reduced my intake to 5g (to save money), but as pointed out, it is only roughly 30p a serving, and there are plenty of discount codes for it on myprotein. would fully recommend to anyone thinking about it. great video james, loving the new style of video recently

At 6:30 you mention Finasteride and Minoxidil. I've been on both for about 17 years. Finasteride side effects are very minimal in most guys and you only take 1mg a day, which is enough to reduce DHT in the scalp. Only fewer than 2% of men experience the side effects of Fin such as erctile disfunction and, for most of those that do, they only last a few weeks. Minoxidil doesn't have the side effects of Fin. Minoxidil stimulates hair growth, whereas Fin reduces DHT, which is why its necessary to use both for effective slowing down of male pattern baldness. Don't worry about taking both Fin and Min for hair loss. They work in 85% of guys.
thanks mate, just don't wanna roll the dice! I'd rather shave it, it dries quicker haha but appreciate you
Mate had two hair transplant and take 0.5 mg dutasteride and minoxidil no side effects and I was a Norwood 7

The 2% side studies are bs. Wouldn’t trust the people behind that tablet for shit.
Idgaf about my balding and also creatine doesn't increase DHT. That one study was bogus and that effect on hormones has never been replicated. Their subjects were probably blasting gear or some shit
I hope this helps whoever might be considering it. Definitely recommend it!

sounds like its worth trying this supliment.
I was taking creatine for a while, i didn't really attribute much progress to it, just thought it natural progression. But when i stopped taking it jesus i noticed, I'd pretty consistently lose 1-2 reps off all of my final sets (usually in the 3x10 rep range). Definitely getting back on it!
I was taking 2 scoops daily for the best part of 3-6 months, i had to go for a blood test and they said that there was a surplus (too much) creatinine in my blood, putting either my kidneys or liver under alot of strain and they wanted to keep me in over night!
So dosage monitoring i find now is SUPER important
Your content has improved massively recently
Nice framing @2:14, really helped get your point across
Creatine monohydrate has doubled in price in the last few years as people have come round to realising its efficacy. I'm 49 94kg and have been training on and off for 34 years. I don't do a loading phase and also like to come off for a few weeks after 10 weeks or so on it. I don't even take protein supplements now, just eat 🥩 🐟 🍗 etc,but creatine I would recommend to anyone.
Funny story with the creatine scooper, when I was 18 and just starting lifting I ordered some creatine as I had heard the big boys using it. Come to use it and noticed there was no scooper, so I thought oh it’s ok I’ll use my WHEY PROTEIN SCOOPER (25gs). Not only is that single scoop absurd I was also told to load it so take 4 scoops… I was taking 100gs of creatine for a week before my body swole up and my friends thought I got fat.. also I couldn’t trust a single fart and think I shit myself 3 times that week. One thing though I was strong as fuck coming off it and had no effects there after.. just a funny story

Great vid! My experience with creatine was 14 years ago (jeez I feel old saying that). So anyway I started with the loading phase and then went on to the recommended dose. My strength gains and bulk look went through the roof and so quickly too. Only downside for me is that I suffer from acid reflux and maybe even GERD. Creatine has a lot of acids in it and did flare my stomach a bit so went off it. But anyone without that problem should be fine! Be conscious too of being heavier. I know scales don’t always matter but if you’re a footballer, runner etc, you may not want to be heavier as you will slow down!
I was on rabeprazole for 35 years, the way to control acid is by drinking cabbage juice and then take ACV, now never felt so good.
@@liveloveride1676 thanks for the tip Sir. I will look into this 👍
I would say if you’ve been prescribed one of the …azole drugs it does more than reduce stomach acid, it has a protective function as well.
And this advice will probably have changed by the time I finish typing this but the Omeprazole*, Atorvastatin*, Ramapril*, (?Aspirin) combo when you hit the age of 50 is probably the best chance you have of living a better quality of life for a longer period of time.

Creatine has no impact on hair loss. That one study was bs and that effect on DHT could not be replicated in any other study. Their subjects were either blasting gear or getting some steroid contamination from somewhere

I haven't used creatine in about 5 years, but I can clearly remember the negative side-effects I had with it. I would sweat profusely in the gym, presumably because I was now holding much more water weight (I was about 80kg at the time, 6ft). When I ran out of creatine I went cold-turkey so to speak, and for the week after not taking it, I had the worst depression; full on low mood, lethargic, angsty.
Despite this I'm ready to give it another shot. Hopefully I'll have a more positive experience this time, given that I know what to expect this time round. Thanks for the vid.

@@pinnah8355 thanks for replying, I forgot to come back on this! I've been taking it since my first comment, and I haven't had any negative side effects. Strength wise I've definitely improved, nothing dramatic but still improvement. This could be down to just consistently training 4-5 times a week though, so impossible to say.
I'm terms of negative side effects, I can't say I've noticed a signicant increase in water weight, and I'm not sweating as much as my previous time using creatine. Again, could be because the weather in the UK has been very mild this summer.
I haven't stopped taking creatine during this time so unable to comment on the negative side effects described when coming off.
I'm taking roughly 5g a day, but the scoop is 3g and then I have to wing it on the second scoop. I also sometimes forget to take it on days when I'm not training, so maintaining a constant level of creatine in my body is an issue. That being said, I haven't noticed any side effects from inconsistent usage.
All in all I'd said its probably worth taking. If the research is correct about the benefits, for price you can pay (a 2kg bag was about £40 on amazon) it's probably worth taking it for even the smallest of benefits.

I'm on it now as a dedicated supplement rather than just mixed into a pre workout can.
Just finished testing week in our performance classes at the gym and got PBs in 6 out of the 8 lifts.
Could be the training cycle, could be the creatine. Could be both.
Like he says, why not, if it's an advantage.
I started training at 55 about a year ago. It's been almost a month of creatine use (yes, I did the loading like a bell end), coupled with collagen, whey and cod liver oil, I have noticed cognative enhancements, physical endurance and explosive potential (like the feeling of wanting to run for no reason). I feel some kind of primal surge of anatomical self correction. Put more simply I've been horny AF. I do mildly use maryjane and modafinil as stimulants (of which I feel aid in training). I tend to avoid anything that's "almost a gram", I'm done with peaks and troughs.
Mary Jane don't stimulate anything, other than estrogen.
@@davekennedy6315 perhaps you are right, I am very much new in this fitness, thing. But the reality is if someone feels stimulated when using maryjane, and that stimulous promotes a desire to work harder, be more attentive, rest more efficiently, then great for them. Whilst, we need testosterone, we also need estrogen for balance. Not every drug/stimulant/supplement/nootropic works for everyone. I don't feel any less of people that don't feel a deep, creative drive with marijuana, in fact I envy my music mentor that can't touch it. But I think alcohol is kinda shit, I can do without it. If you are saying I need more testosterone to counter too much estrogen then thanks, but I had stated I am a mild user and very active...
@@Daffy-Deck yeah, I get you. I used to use it in my teens and personally it wrecked my training. I was weaker, less motivated, just around slower and was living in that constant Cannabis brain fog/fug (slower thoughts, horrendous memory, just very 'dopey') But drugs do effect people in different ways and I do miss that creative/art appreciative side, so I get you on that too. My problem is that I have an 'addictive personality' so I was smoking constantly and soon moved on to other substances, always to excess. I'm 48 now and clean of everything and back training the last 3 or so years (first 2 years natural, last year or so on TRT dose of Testosterone) at home using mainly compound excercises. I feel great and look pretty good for my age I'd say, having put on around 30lb of muscle natural and another 15lb with TRT (along with bodyfat cut) I love it when I hear from fellow older trainers!
@@davekennedy6315 I agree with you about how marijuana is detrimental to some people's well being. Personally I am still weary of enhancers for testosterone because I don't know what I am doing and I would rather face dysmorphia than make stupid mistakes. But I am intrigued with your progress, after a fasting phase my body just wants to eat and eat. I will look into TRT, but think I need at least a year to know my body under stress. Well done on your motivation, I think it's important to be an inspiration to all ages. Weighted calisthenics is the one for me, like you it can be done at home, discreet etc. Yes, I would like the "Brad Pitt/Fight Club physique", but I am strength training not bodybuilding, I train with melee weapons so speed and agility are more important. BTW, you don't have an addictive personality, at the time you were young and the environment was unstable. You're good mate :)
This has helped me a lot! thanks again James!
Rocking the ThruDark. Nice!!!
I took creatine on & off for several years. Found it fantastic for workouts, recovery, energy & improved brain function (memory, speed of thought, reaction time etc).
Unfortunately I believe it has given me a receding hairline, and (although I feel fine), blood tests from the doctors suggests my kidneys are pretty fucked (I've definitely been drinking enough water), so I'm taking a full year off to assess the results on hair loss & kidney function.
I do miss taking it though, and will probably go back to it later this year. Can always get a kidney transplant and wear a wig 😊
It hasn't given you a receding hairline because that one study about creatine and DHT was bs and that effect could never be replicated. You got hair loss because you're a man and most of us get it anyway
creatine used to be insanely cheap its actually gone up a ton compared to say pre 2018 prices
Wrong
Dude, I've been following all sorts of people in the fitness industry such as Jeff Nippard, but man there's something so entertaining and different about the way you present these information. I'm not even halfway through the video yet and I'm already laughing myself off.😂 Love it, bro! Instantly subscribed.
Really like your videos bro. Thx mate
Just found your channel. Excellent mate!
Yeah I haven't been taking it this time around, I just started going back to the Gym a year ago, and I've made a lot of progress. You've convinced me, I'll start taking creatine again.
Great video James. I definitely get skits after taking creatine with morning coffee and considering I drive for work and have no access to a toilet for hours, it is bad. So I push taking it till the end of the day. I noticed a few pounds weight gain when starting to take it but that evens off. Have noticed better performance in workouts and more focused mentally.
Oh Sally! This man is so funny. Literally the funniest fitness youtuber. Also makes so much sense.
been checking out your channel, James, and gotta say, you make learning about all this shite about as fun as i can imagine. thanks.
This guy is REAL!!!! 👌🏾
Cool channel, great information, no bullshit, like the humour, subscribed.
bro how are you not more popular?? fkn love it mate
Love your vids. I think they’ll be even better if you put screenshots of the study is that you found which support your argument as you’re talking about them🙌🏿
I am going to say this was the best and most entertaining video about creatine and straight to the damn point. I started taking it about 2 months ago and just did the 1 heaping scoop a day and that was it, I didnt attempt to do loading. I take mine at night but i have a routine between certain working task that I go make and drink my shake and then 30 minutes later I workout.
I like this guy - no nonsense - keep it simple, getter done!
Keep the scoop from the last tub. Best creative advice.
Great video, unfortunately I spent the first minute laughing that you would be so annoyed at the Vshred advert it made me watch first before seeing this. Great work as always.
Great video cheers
I love watching your videos man. I just started using creatine a couple of days ago, so it was definitely worth the watch anyway. But yeah, i enjoy your no bullshit answers and humor. Keep the videos coming man. 😁✌️🏻
Thanks for the info 😃
