  • In this video, I show you how to easily use your Android Phone Or Tablet as a Screen for your Raspberry Pi 400 Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry pi 3 or basically an HDMI enabled device from the Xbox to Nintendo Switch or even a Mini Computer.
This involves perching a cheap USB to HDMI capture card and a USB type C to Female USB cable but in the end, it works great and can come in really handy on the go!

I’ve found you can do this with Windows 8+ laptop (and probably any windows device). Plug the pi, hdmi cables and video capture device together and into pc USB 3.0 port after turning on the pi (I used a pi4). Windows will (slowly) recognise the video capture device receiving the pi output as a web cam. Then you can just open the camera app then select “change camera” and your laptop screen displays the pi output.
Having tried official usb camera connect apps, the simple windows built in camera app worked the best!

This is really cool! I'll just stick with the NexDock, though, haha.

have you experienced any lag when using the Rpi?
My capture card has almost half a second delay, maybe because of video compression inside the card. I'm trying to figure out how to make it as close as possible to real time, maybe there's a way to switch video modes?

Great video. I'm trying to decide if I want a PI 4 with 4 or 8 gb or a PI 400. I have an IPAD, would this work with that? I have several Logitech unifying mice and keyboards I can use, they will work right?

This works with the Vita without a capture device on a n Android phone. But you need the right plugin on the Vita. (Also works on Fire stick).

I didn't consider that this capture card could be used that way. Gonna have to look into this. I'm thinking that this should be possible with any Linux device as well.
I actually already have one of those capture cards already, which I'm using for my DIY ambilight.

    Hey ! Great Content !
I have a little situation that I wish you can help me with. I was wondering if you can use an android phone/tablet as an operating system for a laptop. Can you use an android as a bootable device for a laptop. For instance, I have a 2014 Moto X2 with a messed up battery (it suddenly turns off when unplugged from charging) and I also have an old laptop that I wish to use a monitor and a keyboard. I know there is something that may be useful like the experimental desktop mode in Android under the Developer Options. What I basically mean is can you convert and old laptop into something like “Nex Dock 2” ?
    What do you recommend ?
    Thanks in advance.

Wow I've been looking for a small display for my pi 400! I can't believe this information isn't more widely known.
I'm going out of town tomorrow so I won't be able to actually try it out for awhile but I noticed that the capture card linked is now 30 dollars. I see there are cheaper ones, I don't know which one to get yet.

Funny Geek Moment: I don't know why this video made me think of this, but I spent 5 whole minutes in Google Play looking for a screen caster from Android to my PC until I remembered I did that stuff for a living and already had remote desktop software that could do that. Thought I'd lighten everyone's day with my duh moment. :-)

out of interest, i take it the android tablet/phone or even an intel tablet, would there be enough power available if you connected the tablet to the power input of the pi4/400, looking at your vid i have a spare intel tablet lying around and it charges off micro usb, but has a usb3 out for whatever is needed, if theres enough power maybe that can power the pi400 and make the tablet serve as a UPS power bank at the same time? Or is there just not enough juice available for the pi?

Very cool. Just FYI (and anyone who watched this video), that video capture dongle now costs $30 :-/ .. I'm sure there must be cheaper equivalent ones.

This is cool, I'm just gonna build a tablet case as the Raspberry Pi in it and plug in the tablet, so you can have a good operating system.
