Nevertheless, Joe Okada (the oldest licensed English-speaking tour guide in Japan) wanted to give his guests a glimpse of the tradition that’s why he started practicing samurai swordsmanship. He eventually became very good at cutting apples in midair which led him to start his own samurai show in 1978 - this became very successful for 13 years with over 130,000 guests. In fact, a lot of TV shows abroad have also invited him and one of his most notable appearances was in David Letterman’s 1998 show. iAmAileen I know I would. I might care to discuss other weapons, such as the spear with him. Out of respect I am glad he wasnt born in the Sengoku Period during the times when all the neighboring Samurai Provinces wasted their time killing each other. Those were days Unarmed Women and Men, including their Children were put in the middle of such chaotic times. Gosh,I'm astonished any civilians were spared during the Sengoku Period. Very tragic.
iAmAileen still, I do admit he's more Ronin than Samurai. I am also a Ronin, and some Samurai disrespected the Ronin too much before taking the time to accept them, first. Yes, the Ronin were masterless samurai. But out of respect,I would say they are more " Unique " in their own way. History says the Ronin took jobs as bodyguards,or taught Bujutsu to those who had need to learn. Some however wandered Japan to take part in Sword Duels to keep their skills intact, and look for a day when they could regain their Honor. Im quite sure the Ronin Wanderer's Way is called " Shugyoushado."
I'm sure if he was around 25 and still under duty of Imperial regime his answers would be different. Because at the age of 16-25 it is the hardest period for a Samurai's career he has to impress his general. For a Samurai death is the last option. So running would be considered as betrayal as per the Samurai custom. Even If there was 100 men a Samurai has to fight as long as his Katana is with him. Those who run they are killed by their own Clan members.
If you ever visit Kyoto I strongly suggest his tour. Sword skills aside. Joe is funny, knows how to interact, and shows Kyoto in away simple tourist wouldn't able to see on his own. Joe had some media make fun of him. But he also is very knowlegable. He even knew about my small country and its politcal stuff and its a far reach for Japan people to know about a small country in Europe :). Had a blast when did his tour. And really would like to visit some time again. Thank you Sensei :)
I'm honestly impressed with just how agile and precise he is with his movements... dude's 89 years old and still got better hand-eye coordination than most people in my class
I felt great affection and respect for this teacher. He has a gentle and gentle look like that of a grandfather, but at the same time that of a warrior who should not be taken lightly. When he talked about running away in front of five samurais… I don't know why, but I have an idea he wouldn't run away. He is kind to tourists, he is keen to show his world of him .. but he also wants respect for that world to which he belongs. I hope he has passed on his knowledge to the new generation. For a moment I had an image in my mind: I saw that younger gentleman, in another era, he and some of his companions surrounded by children near the vegetable market watching them with admiration. And they smiled proud of the respect they deserved because they followed the path of bushido with their hearts, they felt complete, they had the task of protecting their people and this gentleman stroked the head of one of the children, while his companions nodded in silence barely smiling: "Our future, we will take care of them and teach them to do the same. Our people are protected." Inner peace, awareness of who and what one is, the certainty of having one's place… solid roots. I wish the Japanese people to be able to overcome this difficult time by protecting their roots, their people and themselves.
I could imagine this old man when his young, but I would rather it be if he became young again rather than when he was young. For if he was young, he wouldn’t have his skills refined to what it is today, even if his body is older and getting weaker. Though if he became young instead, that is a different story, for he would still have his skills that have been refined by years of training and practice, he could do such things much more ease, speed, and power than his current age.

Incase of 5 of them draw you're weapon faster than you're mind tells you...targeting two of the enemies heads then back off and give you're self a space to counter the next if they attack at once dodge them to you're nearest direction wile dodging cut the nearest enemy's head then stab the other one in the back,if the last one attacks dodge it while keeping some space while slinding you're sword on the unarmored place in the upper body of the enemy. It's all about being fast and doing unexpected moves.

Generalmajor Trull Ooh I see,Thanks for the info but in these times of peace how can samurai complete their duties if they are not on the top of the pyramid?
Denis Hadzibekir samurai means "to serve" (I'm sure you knew that) but that meaning is often misunderstood. A samurai lived a life in service to the emperor in accordance to a code of how they were to go about this service, it's all very complex but the way of the samurai more or less did in fact die off long ago, by that I mean there are no samurai who live that exact life style anymore, much like there are no native American tribes who are exactly as they were two hundred years ago, but their traditions live on in various ways. I think that's what this man is trying to achive. Just because the modern world has no need for what the samurai were centuries ago doesn't mean the man has nothing of value to offer.
How can he be the "last samurai" given his age? The samurai were finished before he was born. Great he's mastered some sword skills. But he is not the "last samurai" as they are all dead.
As mentioned in the description of video above: "Not a lot of people know that real samurais NO longer exist in Japan - the whole lifestyle and system have long disappeared ever since the late 1800s because the emperor favored a more modern western-style army. Bushido is a warrior's way of life, an idea does not die simply because a bunch of people with swords died. The warrior became inner and transcends japan, in Truth, there are many Samurai who do not even know it. Fight on, keep the flame alive! But be like water, flow with the stream of life.
