  • The Truth About Bobby Keys (1943 - 2014) Bobby Keys Life Story
A self-taught musician who never learned to read music, Bobby Keys brought a full-bodied, open-throttle sound to everything he played. He first worked with the Stones in 1969, during the recording of the “Let It Bleed” album, and was immediately drawn to the raw spirit of the band’s music. He became a frequent musical partner in the Stones’ recordings and concerts for more than 40 years. His powerful tenor-sax solo on the 1971 hit "Brown Sugar," which Keys recorded in a single take, became an indelible part of the Stones' musical legacy. He made major contributions to dozens of other tunes, including "Honky Tonk Women" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," and appeared on many of the band's most celebrated albums, such as "Sticky Fingers" (1971), "Exile on Main Street" (1972) and "Some Girls" (1978).
In the 1960s and ’70s, rock music had a notorious set of hellraisers. The names at the top of the rock music wanted list were the likes of John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bobby Keys and, sometimes, even Ringo Starr. This was around the time of John Lennon’s famed ‘Lost Weekend’, a period of 18-month destruction between 1973 and 1975.
Whilst many of the aforementioned names have their fair share of wild tales to tell, Richards and Keys actually shared a lot of notorious moments. For those of you not familiar with the name Bobby Keys, he was the most in-demand saxophonist of the classic rock period, born in Slaton, Texas, in 1943. Keys shared the stage and recording booth with some of the biggest names of the era. However, it would be with English rock band, The Rolling Stones, where he truly made his name.

In 1997 or 1998 I was working as a valet parking attendant at a high end hotel in Los Angeles. The Stones were staying there. I was working one day and Chuck Leavell was standing alone out in front of the hotel. I introduced myself. Leavell was surprised I knew who he was. We were making small talk about music and the upcoming show. Keys walked up and Leavell introduced him to me saying "You must know Bobby if you know me!" LOL. Both are true gentlemen for taking a few minutes to talk to me.

Around 1990 Bobby Keys was playing in a band called the Warsaw Falcons in Cincinnati. The band was founded by Dave Rhodes Brown, a well known local blues and rock musician. I saw then several times, with Bobby, playing in small clubs around the University. Bobby fit into the band very well. They worked up a version of "Can't You Hear Me Knockin" and let Bobby take his long extended solo. I remember that as the other guitarist were taking a solo, Bobby was really good at playing clever little fill licks behind them. Great Stuff!

My pick for a Bobby Keys 'best of' was his solo on Joe Cocker's recording of "Delta Lady". People seem to forget that Bobby was on the Mad Dogs and Englishman tour and played some great stuff on the tour and on the double album of the same name. I got to see him in 1977, in Brisbane, Queensland when he toured Australia and New Zealand with Cocker.

Although I am personally against taking drugs and don't condone the kind of lifestyle that many rock artists live, I am an ardent fan of the Stones music. Bobby Keys was very talented and I was saddened upon hearing of his passing. He made a huge contribution to the Stones music in the studio as well as in their live performances. I was fortunate to have seen the Stones when they were still in their 30's. Mick still has unbelievable energy for being 80..

I saw the Stones in Denver on February 1, 2003, and Keith Richards is THE reason I took up guitar as a teenager. But seeing Bobby was just as much of a thrill as seeing Keith, Ronnie, Mick, and Charlie. I have that entire show on CD, and it just wouldn't have been the same show without Bobby Keys.

The song "Rip This Joint" comes across as a great example of Bobby's crazy rock and roll sax playing. I always think of that song as a Bobby Keys and a Charlie Watts song. Them bouncing off each other is fantastic. A real rocker when you're driving somewhere. So many Stones songs just wouldn't have the same edge if it wasn't for Keys being on them.

the bobby keys era was the stones' best period. the album trilogy of "let it bleed," "sticky fingers" and "exile on mainstreet" is one of the best album trilogies in r&r history. bobby's and nicky hopkins' contributions really gave the band an added kick. never understood why they weren't made permenant members of the band. never even knew what bobby keys looked like (until now.) for some reason i always pictured him being black.
you could add the live album "get your ya-ya's out," which neither bobby or nicky played on, to that trilogy making it a 4sum of truly high quality albums. the live rendition of "midnight rambler" is one of 3 live r&r recordings i think are better than the studio recording.
thanks for this brief history of bobby keys. i always admired and enjoyed his sax playing.

i never thought mick was a good fit for the stones. to me he always seemed too young for them. i think ron wood was a much better fit but the stone's music suffered after "exile." i kinda quit following the stones after that album.

I saw the Stones in summer of 1972 at maple leaf gardens, I was front row to the right side looking at them. At one point, may have been brown sugar, a guy jumped up on stage and stood head to head with mick. Then security rushed the stage and they tackled the guy. Bobby Keys had been smacking a tambourine and it got trashed in the scuffle. I was right in front of him when he looked at me and threw it to me. Had it for years but somebody nicked it. Now that I think of it he would have been playing the sax if it was brown sugar but he was definitely playing the tambourine when buddy jumped on stage

Aside from his playing with the Stones, I think my favorite Keys' track is John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through the Night". I used to play sax in a couple of bar bands in the 80s & 90s and Bobby Keys was always my main inspiration. Surprised to learn he couldn't read music, he was a master of mixing the pentatonic minor and the pentatonic major scales (the building blocks of rock n roll!) To do that strictly by ear takes amazing talent.

The Stones were a r n r band with a sax player. Like Springsteen adopted. This made all the difference. He might as well have been the sixth Stone. I love the loyalty of The Stones to their touring back up musicians.

I agree. The sound of the saxophone played by Bobby made a huge difference indeed. RIP Bobby Keys

He had no intention of drinking it, if I'm not mistaken. He just wanted to see how much champagne could fill a bathtub.

I saw Bobby Keys with the Stones in "81 at Hampton Coliseum. There's a crazy film/doc from that concert that was also broadcast live on pay per view cable channels. My friend hacked the satellite because we lived in Va, it wasn't available there on pay per view, and we had it on VHS, I've watched it many times. I had great seats right above Ian Stewart and Ian McLagan, which was also near Bobby Keys. It was Kieths 38th birthday. A fan ran onstage and Kieth hit him with his guitar. Jagger and Ronnie were snorting coke of Ian's piano and Mick was pulling it out of his shirt pocket... at least it looked like that. Backstage was a melee of crazy shit! Farm animals everywhere, a huge table full of food with a giant bowl of qualudes in the middle of it, men and women in any bathroom.... it was a huge crazy party!.... and a killer fucking show!!! George Thorogood opened... that was the only downside for me.

I of course love all of Bobbys stuff with the Stones. But on Joe Elys 'Letter to LA', Bobby wails on a beautiful solo.. Followed by David Grissom on a tasty guitar. Its at almost feels like Like Joe wrote the tune for Bobby shine.

The 'Whatever Gets You Through The Night' performance is rivaled only by Irv Cox's Starship 'Miracles' blow. But Keys... was dangerously unhinged. It isn't funny or excusable. Deep dysfunction never has been.
