I believe that Apple should attempt to offer support for released macOS versions for 9 or 10 years. Mac hardware lasts longer, the OS should reflect that.
My favorite feature of Monterey is "Erase All Content and Settings" It's going to be very useful to me soon as I ordered the 14" MBP and will have to sell my current one. Will make it much easier on me!
Nice review, Luke. Love the new Notes 'slide-in' and compact tabs in Safari. Most probably the best change for me is that I think Apple have resolved the issue of MBP's getting too hot when attached to a 4K monitor. There are quite a number of reports on these issues and quite a few temp fixes but it appears Apple have included a fix in Monterey. My MBP fans are noticeably quieter and I am going to look at the 'before and after' temps later.
My 2015 MBP 13” came in just under the cusp for MAC OS Monterey, which so far is working grandly, especially after I upgraded both the SSD and the battery.

I'm with you, on my mac, iPhone, and iPad notes is my go to! I used to use apple's textedit anymore, but notes as has taken over and is more robust in my opinion
I actually noticed a change in tabs with the last Big Sure update over a month ago. Going to preferences, sure enough there's compact as well. I'll give it a try. Might try upgrading to Monterey during the weekend (as I don't want to run into any potential conflicts during a workday).
The Quick Note feature is basically the hot corners feature.. You can customize all 4 corners of the screen.. Go to System Preferences - Desktop & Screen Saver - Screen Saver - Hot Corners
The best feature in my opinion is the option to keep the menu bar visible at the top all the time in full screen apps! I have been waiting and hoping for this since I first got a max!
Glad to see old Safari tabs back. Hopefully it will get to Safari 15 on Big Sur as well, as I do not plan to go Monterey yet on production machine. After few updates, maybe
Grrrr damn! I tried compact tab bar and decided I didn’t like it - it looks messy and off centre, and worst of all is the animations - they’re just plain clunky. However I did LOVE the shaded and rounded tabs, and now you’ve really annoyed me coz I now realise that I can’t have my cake and eat it! I can only have rounded tabs if I choose compact, which I definitely don’t want! I can either have pretty tabs with off centre clunky animations or boring trad tabs! I want boring locations but pretty rounded - which I DID have yesterday, but not today - why Monterey, WHY???
It's because people complained so blame them. This WAS how they had the tabs in both views, but with the Monterey release and I'm guessing the Big Sur update that released with it (as Big Sur already had the new Safari) they appear to have changed it back to classic tabs in the separate view. So blame other people. It's their fault we can't have nice things. :P
I find it strange that you find the “compact” tab bar in safari better on a small screen. My daily driver is an 11” Air, and I can’t stand the compact view: I see fewer tabs, there’s no indication that there are additional tabs hidden, the address bar moves all over the place, it gets cramped really fast if you have more than a couple extensions that have icons, and it hides a bunch of the standard buttons/icons. And by default Safari also hides page titles, only showing the icon on each tab, which further complicates the issue of finding the right tab. On a big screen, the compact view might be usable, but on a small screen it’s a mess. I suspect it appeals most to the same people that the new tab navigation on iPhone Safari does: people who use very few tabs. In both cases, the navigation is an improvement over the old UI, *if you have a handful, maybe a dozen, tabs open*, but is way less usable if you have 5 dozen tabs open.

I would like to use an AirPad Pro 12.9 plus stylus on my MacBook Pro as a replacement for my Wacom graphic display. If I understand it correctly, this feature will be added to Monterey this spring. In all announcements I only read about moving your cursor into the iPad display to control it with your trackpad or mouse, but I am mainly interested in the other direction: controlling the MacBook with the stylus. And with touch gestures if possible. This is how tablets work, so I assume this functionality will be added. Right?
How about shortcuts? Could you show us how to create and use them? Do you think they are worthwhile on a Mac? I feel your anticipation for the new MacBooks! I am waiting on your evaluations before I buy the McBook Pro or MacBook Air!
Notes App is great but lacking some key features. One need to have the sidebar navigation available and multiple windows at the same time. Another missing feature is need to resize images once they are within a note. Also need to be able to restor to previous point in case of accidental deletion of contact with a note
