Is a dead key one that cannot be played and remains "down"? I teach piano lessons to a family, the children are wonderful students, but the mom got the piano from the side of the street😢. It's rather horrible to play, and it has at least one dead key. On a side note, would it be very hard for a senior woman like me to do piano tuning? I'm afraid the pieces of the piano might be too heavy. I have more often thought of tuning pianos of my students. Possibly??? Thank you for the great video!! Miss Monique 🙂🙏🌷💗
I am interested in seeing the reply from the piano doctor as well. I tune my own piano at home. I am not a professional and I'm quite sure I'm not doing it perfectly, but there aren't any heavy pieces to move. There are 1 to 3 strings per key though so it is tedious and if even one string is out of tune it is VERY noticeable. It took my piano teacher multiple trips to tune my piano when I was a kid getting lessons.
So that the excess doesn't intrude upon the other keys beside it and so that the hammer can swing freely to a certain extent. If the hammer swings slowly, it means the hammers hinge is too tight, and if it swings too fast, it means the hammer is too loose. You want the hammer to be able to return to its original position easily and safely so these measures are done to do so.
holy shit...I had no idea even something that simple would be so in detail...Replacing the pin with your handy dandy pin holder device that has a ton of different pins?!?! wth! I'm sure the big daddy Steinways get crazy with details.
Piano tuning doesn't cost that much thankfully. A basic job can be like $100-200, and a fix like this might be a bit more. It would be a lot if the piano is in terrible shape and has rotten parts.
I mean, it would make sense if they did charge that much. You have to take apart a whole entire piano and precisely choose a pin. Once small mistake could result in a disaster.
Detail for choosing right size for new pin, is to pick next size bigger from pin that's replaced. That's roughly 0,025mm larger pin. That way it fits tightly in wooden part. Bushings might have to be reamed a bit, since pin is slightly larger.
