I have been happily using Canon systems for nature and wildlife photography as a hobbyist for the last 14 years. With the arrival of mirrorless systems; I find absolutely no reason why my existing equipment should suddenly become useless!!!
I use 1D Mark IV and 7D for wildlife shots. 5D and 5D Mark II for landscape photography. Fully satisfied with the results. Have also tried 7D Mark II for wildlife photography - excellent camera undoubtedly.
Furthermore, some seasoned photographers are saying "I don't know why; DSLR images look superior to me than MILC images."
So, why bother! Let's continue using our DSLRs for as long as they give services.

Great cameras age well, I am shooting with 3 cameras Canon 1DX Mark II Canon 1D Mark IV and a Canon 7D Mark II I have no plans to upgrade. I have cameras that are very capable of making great images and prints. What most people fail to realize is the fact that camera makers hire consumer psychologists etc to come up with plans to persuade high end camera user that the gear they have is no longer capable of making great images, thus the need for an upgrade! I learned this concept years ago as a business/psychology major!

Those are 3 mega camera bodies you own! Yeah I think the shiny new gear always comes across as looking good, but its not like we are going to forget how to take great looking images just because we didn't upgrade to the latest & greatest. Sometimes we need reminding that we can get the results we want with the gear we have! And if we can't then . . . we have ticked the upgrade box.

Then again, modern cameras ensure much higher hit rates with WYSIWYG exposure simulation and much improved autofocus which tracks subjects far better. I'm talking about hit rates for fast-moving subjects, erratic subjects or any subject in very tricky lighting. Also, you don't need a 1DX sized camera for 1DX speed and performance. The R3 creams the 1DXiii and overall, so does the R5.

Ontop of your comment, what I find funny is that most of these people who go on and on, and on about camera gear just share their images online, and reduced ones too, not full resolution, and hardly ever make any prints 😂

    • @quazisanjeed6395
      @quazisanjeed6395 7 месяцев назад +1

You never need a mirrorless camera as you already own fantastic bodies to capture action. Mirrorless users or promoters never mention that their cameras suffer from EVF lag, an issue these cameras can never resolve. We see everything at the speed of light through our OVF and are able to start capturing action shots from the very first moment it starts. This is never possible with mirrorless system as it arrives late on the EVF. Due to this drawback Sony A9III had to incorporate precapture option which is an additional feature crammed into a small box. Due to multiple features; that camera gives up image quality and low ISO facility.
I use 1DIV, 7D and 5DIII for wildlife shooting and won't ever downgrade to the toy cameras that are advertised with deafening noise. Nevertheless, I admit, manufacturers also need to buy bread.

You're smart to jump on a 7DII now, as the prices for moderately used gear are favorable both for the camera and for tons of great EF mount glass out there, as people migrate over to the R-system cameras and RF glass.
The EF 70-200mm f/4L you're using is a great lens, too (I didn't catch if it was the earlier non-IS model or one of the later IS versions, but optically it doesn't matter because all three are quite good).
I've been shooting with a pair of 7DII for over five years (lots of sports, a little wildlife, and a few other things).
If you want some other lenses, you won't go wrong with Canon EF-S 10-22mm, EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, EF 100-400mm L IS "II", or either of the EF 100mm Macro with USM autofocus.
In fact, for fast action shooting "USM" AF is key. Sigma and Tamron have similar in some lenses, that they call "HSM" and "USD", respectively.
This "ultrasonic" focus drive works particularly well with the high performance AF system in the 7DII. Canon claims Is up to 4X faster than their own STM or "stepper motor" drive (which is smoother and quieter for video). The only exceptions are the macro lenses and the ultra large aperture lenses (f/1.2 and f/1.0) which tend to be a bit slower focusing even with USM because they are designed for precise focus instead of for speed, because of potentially very shallow depth of field.
The very best performing lenses have max aperture between f/1.4 and f/2.8, along with USM. Lenses with less than f/2.8 are still pretty darned good, though... as you'll see with that 70-200mm.
I use Back Button Focusing all the time and that allows my cameras to be set to AI-Servo continuous focus almost exclusively. Further, I usually select "single point" and any one of the 7DII's 65 AF points. Then it's my job to keep that point right where I want camera and lens to focus. Doing this with familiar sports I can count on over 95% accurate focus. And most of the few misses are my mistakes, not the camera's.
Occasionally I will use "spot focus" (smaller AF point, good for "birds in trees"), one of the the "expansion point" modes or a small "zone". Mostly I only use the last three with really fast, erratic subjects that won't be obscured much and are reasonably distant from any distracting background or against a plain sky, etc. I don't get quite as high % of accurate focus using these multi point patterns, but the subjects are difficult to shoot with a single point.
There are also several things you can adjust in the 7DII, to effect how fast it jumps from a subject, to prioritize focus over shutter release, etc. Suggest you download the free PDF 7DII autofocus instruction manual (50 pages) from the Canon website (along with the complete user manual), if you haven't already done so.
Enjoy experimenting with the 7DII. It's a very capable camera.
P.S. You said in video the R7 is sort of a "mirrorless 7D Mark III". I have to disagree. To me it's more of a mirrorless 90D... Build quality, materials, design, weather resistance are not at "7D" levels. I suspect durability isn't either. 7DII is rated to do 200,000 shutter actuations, 90D is rated to do 120,000 clicks. Both those are 10 frames/sec. cameras. So I would hope the R7 with its mechanical shutter able to do 15 frames/sec would be rated for 300,000 clicks. But Canon hasn't said and I'm betting it's not.

Thanks for the info Alan! I like the look of that super wide angle 10-22mm for some quirky shots. I'm playing around with the AF options on the camera, it has so many variables its crazy but I'm sure I'll find something that works for my shooting style. Yeah I did mention that the R7 is kind of like the 7D MKiii, I'm not super up to date with the build quality variations from Canon as I've been shooting Pentax since I started around 4 years ago, I did contemplate the 90D for this experiment at one point, but from reading up & comparing the 7D MKii suits my needs better I think. Yeah i would like to think the R7 has a long shutter life if it's going to be shooting 15fps on the mechanical shutter! On a side note do you know how to find the shutter count on the 7D MKii? I can't seem to find any way forward with this? Cheers

My 7D Mk II should be arriving tomorrow (I traded in my beloved and trusty 7D), and I cannot WAIT! I'm 60, but I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas. As many others have posted, I really like my DSLRs (300D, 20D, 1DX Mk III, plus the impending 7D Mk II), with a selection of reasonably good lenses. I have nothing against mirrorless at all, but my kit serves my needs beautifully, and since I don't shoot any video, there's no great reason for me to invest in the "latest and greatest" hardware.

@@LeeIveson Really nice, thanks! I've found that the pairing of that camera with my 24-105 is a great one, but I've used lenses from my 24mm all the way up to my Sigma 100-400 (which is actually being traded in so I can get a Canon model instead). One really interesting thing is that I found the original 7D made me work a bit harder to get good shot settings compared to the other 3 cameras. The Mk II seems to be a bit more agreeable! So, with the Canon 100-400 coming soon, and with my wife giving me the 70-200 f/4 for Christmas (she's getting a new bathroom, so who won that one??? 😉), the last bit of kit I'd really like to get is a 500mm. My hobby has grown a bit over the years.. I've pre-ordered the Canon R7 still have a 7DmkII ( on a 100-400mm II) it's only got 12,500 on the shutter still looks new. I have other cameras I use 1dmk3 (on a Canon 300mm f2.8LIS) and a Nikon 7100 ( on a Sigma 300-800mm) and a Canon 5D classic. (wide and portrait lenses) I use each with their own specific lenses. I do love astro and sometimes use the 7dmkII with the 300mm f2.8LIS on a Fornax LighTrackII yeah not only it's a great camera for birds (BIF) and wildlife it's got a very good reputation for long exposure astro. I'm getting the R7 as it has the animal eye tracking 15/30fps so can get different wing movements as I track birds in flight and flippy screen for macro. The R7 isn't replacing 7dmkII still a good camera I'm keeping it for the moment till Nikon come out with the Z8 or I get an OM-1 that's been on my mind a lot for the stacked sensor.

Wish I'd seen this video before! I'm a long time pentax k-3 user but just a week ago bought a 7d mark ii. While the k-3 is great for landscapes and slow moving subjects, the auto focus struggles on quicker moving subjects like birds. So far I'm impressed with the 7d to quickly acquire and hold focus (with a Tamron 100-400mm no less). I think the k-3 has better ergonomics, e.g. try setting exposure compensation on the 7d using the equivalent of k-3's TAv mode! The main reason I'd get an r7 is the bird auto focus mode but at 3x the cost, I thought I'd try a used 7d first.

    Shutter Count
I tried for a long time to find the shutter count on my 7DmII, and nothing ever worked, until I stumbled on one program that did show it. Capture One will show you what the count is - and you can download it for free for a 30 day trial. I had downloaded it to try some tethered shooting and see if it was worth it, and I just happened to notice that when it was tethered to the camera, in the camera information, it would show the shutter count. I don't know why nothing else can show it...
The shutter started going bad on my camera at around 1,300,000 shots (I kept having to reboot the camera), so at about 1,400,000 I sent it in to Canon and they replaced the shutter and curtain for about $550, and then I put another 1,000,000 shots on it before I finally sold it (and got an R6). It was still going strong at over 2,400,000 shots - I'd say that's fairly impressive. I loved that camera.

My main interest now is wildlife, when I needed a big lens for the Sony, the best choice at the time was a Sigma 150-600mm (Canon EF) and a converter. I have always wondered what the auto focus would be like on a Canon body. I got a Canon 7D mark ii this week and it seems to be driving the lens better than the Sony. I still love my Pentax gear, but when it comes to shooting fast moving subjects I'm picking up the 7Dii these days. Further down the line I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on a mirrorless camera, it will be very interesting to try out all of the AF tracking features & the EVF.

    Nice video.
I would have chosen the Nikon D500 between these two cameras. That was and still is a great APS-C pro camera for fast action and wildlife. A few years ago I never would have bought a canon camera. Because of the worse dynamic range, high iso performance and colour depth. The D500 has about two stops more dynamic range than the 7D II. For me that‘s an important point.
But there are always pros and cons. There are a lot of great cameras in the market, and the 7D II is one of them. And with the mirrorless cameras things changed again. So today I use the canon R6, as my first canon camera in my live. 😉
Wish you a nice time with your new camera.

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  2 года назад +2

Thanks Frank much appreciated. I did consider the Nikon D500 but for my budget I couldn't afford to buy that camera & a lens that I would want to use with it. I agree the Nikon D500 is a better camera in many ways than the Canon 7D MKii, like you mentioned the dynamic range & ISO capabilities are much better also the buffer for continuous shooting. Another reason is that my main system at this point is Pentax, so this is an experiment at the moment. In the future I would love to do the same with the Nikon D500 for sure!
I must admit the new generation of mirrorless cameras have some outstanding features! Features that have some huge advantages I feel, your Canon R6 looks fantastic as do many of the new breed of mirrorless options. For now though I will keep waving the DSLR flag! If for nothing else I feel I still have a lot to learn about photography & that shooting with the cameras I do will help/force me to be more mindful in what I'm trying to achieve.

    I recently got unexpectedly got
A 7D mark II myself I was quite surprised about the price that I got for as normally entry level DSLRs appear in my price range because I am a budget user and buying pre owned gear is about the only way that I can afford to get a DSLR camera because that's always been the problem with that sort of camera you can very easily end up spending an arm and leg on lenses alone without all the various camera bodies that are available it can
Turn out to be a very expensive
    Habbit if you become addicted
By camera specs but if you just want a good quality versitile camera with reasonable specs then that is the way to go because you don't have to always drop a ton
Of money to get if you are in the right place at the right time
Which is the other half of the secret

The 7Dii is great value for money in my opinion, especially if your not that interested in the video side of things. Photography can become very expensive like you say with all the the lenses & other equipment, so to be able to pick up great deals on yesterday's pro level cameras is a big plus to using older cameras.

This video is funny to me. I have a 7D Mk II with a battery grip. It is built incredibly well. The End. I bought an R7 and other than build quality (which is still decent) it's so much better in virtually every other way, so much so that the 7D Mk II doesn't even get touched.
The R7 has better image quality, better ISO performance, way way way way better autofocus which covers the whole frame, actively seeks the subject and sticks to it significantly better than the 7D Mk II does. It has a greater buffer and considerably faster burst rates.
The camera has a lot of nice touches too, like sensor-shift auto-horizon levelling, focus stacking with in-camera processing. Panorama mode which builds the image as you pan and it's ready as soon as you release the shutter. Has a top shutter speed in EFCS of 1/16000 and a flash sync speed of 1/320 in EFCS. The dynamic range is superior too for when you have to shoot in harsh conditions and cannot use flash. There are so many customisable buttons that you can tailor the camera to your needs and it's more ergonomic than the 7D Mk II. The battery life is significantly better in real world use.
The 7D Mk II is like a vintage car. Beautifully built, but ancient in performance. The R7 is a sleek modern sports car with every option included.
One other nice touch on the R7 is that it calls a burst a scene. If you decide to delete the whole burst, you simply delete the scene and every image in that burst is deleted. This is especially useful on a camera which shoots up to 30fps. The camera has a special mode where it continuously keeps 0.5secs worth of shots into the buffer until you press the shutter button to fire a burst. It keeps the 0.5secs of shots before you pressed the shutter button, plus all the shots after you pressed it. So if you're waiting for a bird to take off or land and your reaction time is too slow, the camera has you covered. This is available in stills and video.

Most of the people who enjoy driving don't enjoy going from A to B, they enjoy what's in the middle. With photography and many other things is the same, if you enjoy photography you usually enjoy the process of taking photos, not just the photos. Modern focusing systems are not for looking the other way and pressing the button. The systems are for professional sports, news and wildlife photographers that are sending their images to photo editors often in very short time windows. Mirrorless focusing systems are superior to dslrs. You simply get a higher keeper rate. I don’t think it would wise to send a bunch of soft images to your editor at the Times in London. Then when he asks what happened you wax poetic about the great old cameras of yesteryear.
