Union Carbide made a lot of money off of Carbide Willson's patent for calcium carbide production. The company would later be taken over by DOW Chemical in 1999 for $8.89 billion.
Churchill Falls power plant is the 2nd largest in North America, and makes almost 1% of the world's hydroelectric power. It isn't your typical dam, but a series of dikes that direct water to a natural reservoir/lake (the generating plant is underground). It's a very controversial facility for many reasons: it flooded the traditional hunting and trapping grounds of the Innu people (and was built without their consent) and it's been at the centre of a centuries-long argument between Newfoundland/Labrador and Quebec.
* Correction: The footage shown at 5:03 to 5:06 is actually Chicago-the result of a mislabeled bit of archival.
They should teach Canadian history like this in our schools. imo Canadian history is NOT boring and there are so many interesting stories to be told. Please keep these videos coming! :-D
I'm an American and I agree, I enjoy learning about Canada. I thank all Canadians for their friendship. Peace.
They should show all these videos in schools!
These could be played in classrooms! :)
Agree 100%. I am a Canadian Army veteran and have always been a student of our history. Don't let the old American movies fool you, Canadian history is also exciting, time we started really talking about it other than in negative terms
Yes, teachers use these in classrooms.
Canadians are unaware of just how much we have historically contributed to some of the most important inventions and industries in the world. It’s a shame we aren’t taught much of that in school. We shouldn’t know more about Americans and their history.
I'm from the U.S. and I enjoyed this history video.
Thanks
Great video, thanks for all the effort.
A fellow Canuck watching in Fiji.
Sailing around the world
You deserve much more views buddy, Canada is a country whose history is very less known around the world.
This should be a series on Tv
We LOVE this channel. What an amazing presenter you are!!
I love the spirit Canadians had back then.
I love these. Never learnt about Canadian history in high school, so grateful for these uploads!
Please keep them coming!
We're trying! Thanks!
I love the storytelling here.
Wow, I've been to those ruins, and I've also visited the Churchill falls generating station in Labrador. I never imagined the two as being connected.
ikr, they should have named the station Willson Station.
More of these, please. Especially ones that start with "The Mystery of ... (something Ottawa-related)".
Or just Canada related
Ok, so I had to double check, and Churchill Falls hydro-electric plant is currently 10th largest in the world. Still pretty incredible, but no longer the largest.
Thank you, was looking for this comment
Lucas Leandro glad I could be of assistance. 👍
Randomly came across this...so glad I did. Excellent work! Cheers from Northern ontario! Subbed!
Hope you get many more views to further your project! What an amazing way to tell Canadian history. You've got the perfect voice and storytelling style to do it.
Thanks for the kind words! We just hope we can keep the train rolling!
Visited the plant before the pandemic- loved the view of the ocean, never knew it had such a famous founder. Great video :)
Accidentally came across this. So glad i did!! I've visited these places but your video brings it back to life. Keep them coming!

Thanks! It'll be difficult to predict what's next, every episode we've shot so far is very different!
You know there is basically porn on RUclips too right?
Loved hearing this history!
Just found this channel, figured I'd start at the beginning. I also noticed that you're still posting (as of two weeks ago), well played! Thank you.
And I thought Meech Lake was just an Accord.
cool Honda makes a meech lake model?
Maybe the real mystery of Meech Lake is how Québec is still in Canada.
Excellent videos came across them accidently now binge watching the channel

Those ruins are truly a fantastic place. They should be preserved because they are the testimony of the perseverance of the human spirit. A great man and a great story. Keep up the good work, guys!
Excellent content and presentation! Canadian mad scientist, eh? Who’d have ever known about this very alternative history?

Awesome! I love your videos!
Wow. Great show.
Thanks for the great video. I love learning about Canadian history. I am in Toronto and like seeing old pictures of downtown Toronto in the 1880s and having modern pictures next to them.
Keep up the great vids!
I lived in Chelsea-Hull for years and spent a lot of time in the Gatineau Park and I dont know where those ruins are. Very cool. Thank you
awesome story canadiana
I have visited those areas before and it feels good to know what happend there years ago
reminded of the great Bill Bryson :-)
Greetings from Winnipeg
@2:50 that looks like a pretty decent spot from which to revolutionize an industry....
Great lake ,the best bass fishing near Ottawa.
As an historian, could you do a video about inventor Cyrille Duquet?
I grew up in that area and know Meech lake well, we ski across it in winter. I knew nothing of this story, my history teachers should be ashamed.
Top video nuf said
Very interesting, thanks for this..... and yes my second name is MEECH.
Too young, we lost a gem. May he RIP.
5:19 -5:20.. he sort of looked like the actor, David Ogden Stiers!
Damn...I gotta go check that lab myself.. it's maybe 20 or 30 minutes away
This is an awesome story. So many great inventors lost everything.. Look at Tesla.
I’ve been there it’s a great running trail
I saw meech lake and right away thought of the meech lake accord.
What happened to the fertilizer part?
amazing! so has quebec been following wilson s dream?
Been there live right next to it.
Where is the video about the legacy of RUSH?
Ha I've been there. I remembered reading the info their and it didn't give this much detail.
Between 5:02 and 5:06, footage of Chicago was shown instead of New York.
Good eye! We checked and it was a wrongfully titled clip from Archive.org. We will make a note of it in the description.
You should be making school documentaries...
I go swimming at meech lake all the time never knew
Why did he refused to grant unanimous whatever ? What happened ? Was it a good thing or detrimental thing ?
Elijah Harper link broken
Why did I know this story would end bad......eh, they always do don't they.
Tuck yer shirt in there bud and I suggest you let that marinate ;)
Does he know his shirt is not tucked in? AND there are strange noises coming from his mouth...
Was the dam destroyed by a man or did it collapse on its own?
You make one major mistake on Meech Lake accord. Meech Lake was stopped by Clyde Wells who said no to his Liberal party overseers . Harper was a just a second one to say no he could not have stopped the accord.
A bit of constructive criticism for the narrator should he choose to take it on board; intonation is important in communication. Your message would be better delivered by emphasizing the key word or syllable of a sentence, signaling to the listener it's importance to the idea you are trying to convey. The more words or syllables are emphasized, the less effect the emphasis has. It also results in a cadence that is unnatural and a bit jarring. I mean no offence by by this. The subject matter is quite interesting. But the manner in which a story is told is nearly as important as the story itself. That is my bit of feedback, for what it's worth. I hope it's received in the spirit it was intended. Cheers.
No longer the largest in the world, more like 16th.
Not much of a mystery.
This like only in japan
The real mystery is who dressed you.
Tuck your shirt in for christ sake.
You're absolutely right. He's a great presenter, but his dress sense is appalling.
So nothing about the Meech Lake Accord, pity..
why is your jacket so small? you didn't nab it from a passing schoolboy did you?
Overly enlarged colon. Duh.
No way. That guy found that stuff already built there and took it over. There are ruins across the country from way before our history suggests.
Why are you dressed like you're wearing the clothes of someone 2 sizes smaller than you? Where is this other person and why can't you get your own clothes?
I walked that same trail in grade 2... some 54 yrs ago
Cool 💞👍
