One photo I think you forgot to mention was the Xenia Ohio tornado of 1974. There’s a picture where you can see the tornado up close destroying a neighborhood with a parking lot in the foreground. That photo captured my interest as a child, and years later, I tracked down the location on Street View. It was just interesting to see.
I’ve met Paul with my great grandma when I was younger. She survived with my ggpa and their three kids in a mobile home and she never stopped telling that story. I never knew he took that picture!
I remember looking at these photos when i was little. (like the helicopter near a waterspout photo) seeing them all in books. on tornado internet forums. its so nostalgic. i even call these photos "The Tornado Classics"
I had the book by Warren Faidley : Storm Chaser In Pursuit of Untamed Skies but someone stole it from me when I was a kid. I took with me everywhere. Back then that book was very expensive! I also had a CD disk of The Weather Channel for Windows 98 called *Everything Weather*, I watched that almost every day after school for many years. Of course you cannot mention all of these without mentioning, Twisters: Nature's Fury part 1 and 2 and Twisters: Fury On The Plains
Yes, please do a part two! Thank you for giving us the details on the first photo. I have been trying to find out more about that photo for years. The most information I could get was that it was a waterspout in Florida. Nighttime tornadoes are one of my greatest fears, so that picture creeps me out.
The Tornado Girl photo is so good. Just a massive tornado tearing up the land and the girl is just standing there nonchalantly. For some reason it gives me a melancholic feeling whenever I look at it. A part 2 would be sick btw
I for one would indeed enjoy a part 2. Also, I'm a survivor of the 1994 F4 Lancaster/Hutchens tornado, and I would love to see a video that features this tornado. Thanks!
I can provide pictures, location details, how my residence was damaged, ect. Reach out if you want help in putting together details on this specific storm if you want an extensive breakdown of it.
Weird is a GOOD THING. Normal is boring ... and, honestly, I think all of us who are a bit more honest about who we are are willing to be "weird" making weird normal ... normal but not boring. So, be weird! It's good for you, good for me, good for all of us. Plus, weather is cool stuff! It's like one of the most normal things there is: Weather is ubiquitous. ❤
The foreground buildings in Faidley's shots of the Miami tornado do exist. Faidley paralled the tornado moving south on Highway 70 until reaching Antelope Hills Rd where he turned off to get his final few photos. The trees obscuring the building in the photo are actually about halfway between the shot location and the building behind it, which is at the very end of the road. They surround a small pond, which ironically means if the Dodge in the poster were actually placed there, it'd be submerged in water. (After rechecking, it appears the pond was actually quite temporary, as it did not exist prior to 2019 and has also since dried up. Faidley alternatively then could have stopped at these trees instead, but it's difficult to tell).
See, now you are digging into pictures from my teenage years. Learning the backstories of these pictures means as much to me as when I learned the backstories of the pictures in my history books, both the history and the making of the actual paintings. And I was truly honored to see some of those very paintings in real life recently. That was a huge bucket list moment. Sorry, rambling.....this kind of thing has always fascinated me.
The Whirlwind in lighting photo was used as the cover of the Weather book that got me interested in tornadoes as a child, so I remember it pretty well 😍
Keep the content coming! I’m 36 and I’ve been obsessed with tornadoes since the mid nineties when Twister made storm chasing a mainstream topic of discussion. Every time I see you’ve uploaded a new video I watch it immediately. I live in Illinois so I’d love to see you do a deep dive on the infamous Tri State Tornado of March 18th, 1925. I feel like there’s limited information out there but maybe you can unearth some info that many people don’t know about, including myself. Anyways, keep up the excellent work, good sir.
Being from northeast Indiana, I could probably answer your question about where the Midway tornado struck on Palm Sunday. You were extremely close, but the site where the tornado struck was around the present day County Road 17 overpass. If you Google “Goshen Indiana midway trailer park”, you’ll find some local news articles related to the former Midway site being used to construct the bridge. You also have Tornado Archive that shows the tornado path close to a present day pond and dentist’s office, which are both just northwest of the overpass. So, it’s in that area. By the way, Goshen is pronounced with a long O, so “Go-shen” instead of “Gah-shen.” I love watching your videos Jake! They remind me of being fascinated with tornadoes and weather as a kid.
All of these were quite fascinating, especially the history behind each one. I think my favorite one is the double vortex from Indiana. That one is extraordinary.
A video combining my interest in photography and tornados? Hell yeah! Great video, I'd love more of these! By the way: *really* appreciated you also mentioning metric units in the previous video and I really miss them here. I kinda have to stop the video and quickly do the conversion all the time which is quite distracting.
I like tornadoes, my grandfather teased me about storm chasing and it stuck with me all these years, every time tornado sirens start singing my stomach sinks but I get an adrenaline rush and I love it.
Could you PLEASE make a vid about different types of 🌪 dreams, and their different interpretations? I'm terrified, yet fascinated by 🌪 and have different types of dreams about them. Anyone else have tornado 🌪 dreams??
1990s was a crazy time for weather for the Texas Panhandle! I remember getting excited seeing the local weathermen cover the tornadoes, sometimes even reporting live in front of them!
I think I can say pretty certainly that Paul Huffman's photo is what originally sparked my interest in tornadoes. I grew up right there in Dunlap, and the bank my parents went to had that picture right above the door in their lobby, so I spent a lot of time staring at it while my parents were busy. I remember being told by a teller that the bank was built in the path of the Midway double tornado, hence their having the picture up, but I'm pretty sure it was actually built in the path of the second twin tornado that hit an hour later to the north.
I live near where the Midway Dunlap tornado was captured and my grandparents remember that day, it was hot and humid the sky turned dark and they remember the damage caused by the the 2 tornadoes that hit that day
Absolutely a part 2! Might I make a helpful suggestion? The Perry Riddle photo sequence from June 8th 1966 in Topeka Kansas. I can even give you location details. The parking lot of the Countryside UMC, when people were taking cover in the church's basement. Perry Riddle was a staff photographer for the Topeka Daily Capitol, and the one major photo that shows the terror the people experienced that day resonates all these years later. He was facing west/southwest, and was only about a half mile away.
I’ve been following for nearly 2 years. It makes me happy to see the growth you’ve obtained and I hope you continue to succeed. Very good quality content.
*THAT DOES IT!!!!!* We need a collaboration with Weatherbox. Top ten tornadoes of all time, or something to that effect. List your empirical evidence, and reasons why you believe them to be, etc. The content is fantastic, very informative, and provides waves of nostalgia from my childhood. Nice work Brofessor Swegle!
As a long time tornado nerd, this was a real treat! I'm surprised I've never seen the "Tornado Girl" picture before. If you ever decide to do a part 2, Eric Lantz's incredible photo of the 1968 Tracy, Minnesota tornado is a perfect candidate.
A part 2 would be gratefully appreciated!! So many other iconic tornado photos with stories behind them, in particular, the Wichita Falls Tornado of 1979.
These photos bring be back so much, I remember pouring over weather books and videos as a kid and seeing those amazing shots, especially remember that one with the lightning illuminating the tornado at night. Love these dives into weather and storm media history too, it’s getting me psyched to attend my local SkyWarn courses soon!
0:22 just recommending to you, don't show amazon pages because theyll dox you but love your videos man theyre always really entertaining and high quality
7:53 defiantly the best in my opinion. not only is the picture insane but something about the colors in it with the grainy 80s quality makes it even more eye catching
i love geolocating the locations of tornadoes on streetview. one that i really enjoyed researching was the 2014 mongolia ef4. its also funny because mongolia doesnt have much streetview, but the road the video of it was captured on is the only road in surrounding areas that is covered by google, which made the geolocating a lot easier.
Small correction, but the Palm Sunday Outbreak also hit Ohio as well! There was actually an f4 over my hometown which supposedly was a multi-vortex like the Midway-Dunlap tornado
This video took me back to my childhood. There was a book in my elementary school library about tornadoes that piqued my love for learning about them. On the cover was the very last tornado in this line up and on one of the pages the very first tornado mentioned. They were both such fascinating things to look at and my small child brain at the time couldn’t fathom something that big. Age 28 and here I am on this video still super interested in tornadoes lol
you dropped the video ive been waiting for! 🌪 ive been looking for the inspiration for the ditch tornado from Twister and i think that clip you showed at the end might be it
One of the things I’ve always loved about the Tornado Girl photo is how bright and sunny the foreground is. It’s not just the juxtaposition of the girl and the tornado; it’s the juxtaposition of the girl on a bright sunny day with the tornado behind her. The sky in the background even looks blue. You have to squint to see the dark clouds behind the twister. It’s the tornado that looks even more out-of-place than the girl!
You definitely gotta do a part 2, I loved this video a lot, that first image I actually have in a picture frame as well as some photos of me inside of a DOW and infront of the TIV since my museum was playing Sean Casey’s tornado documentary and I got to see that to celebrate my birthday
I live in Oregon, and we don't get a lot of tornadoes here. However, what got me interested in weather in general, and tornadoes in particular, was living in Kansas during the late 1960s. We had moved to Topeka a year or so after the June 8, 1966 tornado that caused over $100 million in damage to the city and the state capitol building. We could still see signs of the track the tornado took through Topeka, as one of our favorite hamburger places had been built right across the street from an area of denuded trees.
I think this is my new favorite video of yours (though it’s so hard to pick since all your vids are top notch). Learning the stories behind the tornado pics I obsessed over as a kid is so satisfying
A part two would be great! Would love to know the story behind the story behind the photo of the tornado that was, supposedly, of the Tri-State tornado with the stove pipe tornado with a funnel on either side of the main vortex. Obviously, it’s not the Tri-State tornado, but I’d be cool to know more about the actual photo and tornado! Thanks as always for the great content!
Plsss do a part 2! It is almost these exact photos that started my obsession with tornadoes and the weather. So pls make a part we would live to see it! (Maybe even one on famous tornado videos?)
Amazing video as usual! I always look forward to your content. with the upcoming tornado season, it may be interesting to little recaps of major storms and tornadoes that happen in the coming months!
