  • The 1st Cavalry Division next fought in the Vietnam War. No longer a conventional infantry unit, the division had become an air assault division as the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), commonly referred to as the 1st Air Cavalry Division. The use of helicopters on such large scale as troop carriers, cargo lift ships, medevacs, and as aerial rocket artillery, was never before implemented, but by doing so it freed the infantry from the tyranny of terrain to attack the enemy at the time and place of its choosing. In 1965, colors and subordinate unit designations of the Division were transferred from Korea to Fort Benning, Georgia, where they were used, along with separate elements of what had been the 2nd Infantry Division, to reflag the existing 11th Air Assault Division (Test) into the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Concurrently, the personnel and units of the 1st Cavalry Division, which remained in Korea, were used to reflag the division into a new 2nd Infantry Division.

    Didn't say much about the Heavy 1st Cav loses in the Ia Drang, Nov,1965. The over land march (withdraw) from LZ X-Ray to LZ Albany was the largest loss of American soldiers from 1 unit, in one day of the entire war (1958-1975)! More than 150 1st Cav soldiers ambushed, attacked, over-ran and "wiped-out" in 2 hours by the 66th NVA Regiment that afternoon! Almost an Entire Company of 1st Cav troopers KIA with very few NVA KIA in that short engagement a few days after the battle at the Chu Pong Mountain (LZ X-Ray, We Were Soldiers Once and Young). 2 times more American soldiers KIA in 2 hours........ than were KIA in 6 days of fighting against the NVA during "Hamburger Hill" in 1969!!! The American Army in it's press release said "light" casulties after the ambush at LZ Albany. Not much of a "Thanksgiving Day" for the survivors of that ambush when after they got back to their Division base camp at Anh Khe and only 30 troopers reported for formation out of an entire 1st Cav company!! So SAD! No wonder Soldiers and Marines in Vietnam called being KIA......WAISTED !!!! And even in Afghanistan and Iraq.......What a WAIST !!!! When will WE ever learn?

    • @gordonlandreth9550

      A lot went wrong during the march to LZ Albany , and the Cav suffered due to lack of stealth , lack of sleep , not enough artillery support along the route , ect . The main thing was that the NVA knew right where they were and where they were going . Then they maneuvered the forces they had to spring a big , close in ambush . Too close to bring in artillery fire . Many lessons were learned that day .

    • @gordonlandreth9550
      @gordonlandreth9550 3 года назад +4

      The tactic worked well because heavy weapons could not be used in a close in fight .

      @@whatstheproblem6606 That is a good question , I would have to check my books about the battle to find out why they were just pulled out of LZ - X - Ray . But to do that march , without careful recon , without flankers and supporting fires leading the way , it meant for big trouble .

    "Licking it's wounds"= only a few hundred dead and we ultimately Lost the war with a 70% civilian death rate

    • @lifeveteran9766
      @lifeveteran9766 5 месяцев назад

      Bullshit. The war was not lost militarily - and that was NOT the civilian casualty rate by allied forces. NVA, of course, - being typical communaziocialists - did target and murder civilians. They used the Hmong (aka Montagnards) as living targets for their soldiers, they impaled toddlers on feces covered punk stakes, and decapitated the families.
      It was the Demodung party here that sold Southeast Asia into holocaust and slavery.

      No, the Viet Nam war, including the commie invasions of Laos and Cambodia. was ordered by Stalin to Mouse Dung in China in 1949 - along with Korea, Tibet, parts of Nepal and India, and Burma. The ARVNs were fighting for their freedom, and would have prevailed except that Demodungs in our country sold them into comminazifasciocialist slavery and holocaust.

    The "Columbus" bound unit was 2nd/5th. A coin toss determined who went where.
    The Ambushed Battalion's CO called all four of its Company Commanders to the Bn CO's position at the front, along with their eight radios, leaving them leaderless, but for the three Platoon Lieutenants in each.On Company Commander ran al the way back to his unit an the rear, losing both RTOs to enemy fire. That Bn CO... I hope he was relieved of command...
