- RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH MR SLIM GAILLARD & HIS TRIO ! Bulee "Slim" Gaillard (January 4, 1916 February 26, 1991) was an American jazz singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist, noted for his vocalese singing and word play. A related singer in the idiom of humorous jazz singing is Babs Gonzales, who also flourished in the 1940s. Along with Gaillard's date of birth, his family lineage and place of birth are disputed. One account is that he was born in Santa Clara, Cuba of a Greek father and an Afro-Cuban mother ; another is that he was born in Pensacola, Florida to a German father and an African-American mother . There is also question as to whether he was actually born in Detroit. Regardless, Gaillard grew up in Detroit and moved to New York City in the 1930s. Gaillard first rose to prominence in the late 1930s as part of Slim & Slam, a jazz novelty act he formed with bassist Slam Stewart. Their hits included "Flat Foot Floogie (with a Floy Floy)", "Cement Mixer (Puti Puti)" and the hipster anthem, "The Groove Juice Special (Opera in Vout)". The duo performs in the 1941 movie Hellzapoppin'. Gaillard's appeal was similar to Cab Calloway and Louis Jordan in that he presented a hip style with broad appeal (for example in his children's song "Down by the Station"). Unlike them, he was a master improviser whose stream of consciousness vocals ranged far afield from the original lyrics along with wild interpolations of nonsense syllables like MacVoutie O-reeney. One such performance is celebrated in the 1957 novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Gaillard later teamed with bassist Bam Brown; Slim and Bam can be seen in a 1948 motion picture featurette -- with the Gaillardese title O'Voutie O'Rooney -- filmed live at one of their nightclub performances. In the late forties and early fifties, Gaillard frequently opened at Birdland for such greats as Charlie Parker, Flip Phillips, and Coleman Hawkins. His 1945 session with Parker and Dizzy Gillespie is notable, both musically and for its relaxed convivial air. Gaillard could play several instruments, and always managed to turn the performance from hip jazz to comedy: he would play the guitar with his left hand fretting from the top of the neck, or would play credible piano solos with his palms facing up. Gaillard appeared in several shows in the 1960s and 1970s, such as Marcus Welby, M.D., Charlie's Angels, Mission Impossible, Medical Center, and Along Came Bronson. He also appeared in the 1970s TV series Roots: The Next Generations and reprised some of his old hits on the NBC primetime variety program, The Chuck Barris Rah Rah Show. By the early 1980s he was touring the European jazz festival circuit, playing with such musicians as Arnett Cobb. He also played with George Melly and John Chilton's Feetwarmers, appearing on their BBC television series. He later appeared in the musical film Absolute Beginners (1986) singing "Selling Out".

Slim had his career reinvigorated after Dizzy Gillespie found him washing dishes at ernestine Anderson’s jazz club in 80’ or 81..I was there when he called George Wein and said something like ‘ I found Slim Gailard’..mr wein immediately got a summer tour together and slims career was back on track ,he was the toast of the european festival scene until he passed away..
He had a great turn in the 1986 film Absolute Beginners doing a number called "Selling Out" that I used to play to end my register shifts at Tower Records

Here's another appearance from that era:

I saw him play in Glasgow, Scotland around that time - he was great, and chatted to us after the show. Lovely fella.
Sounds similar to what Keith Richards did for Johnnie Johnson.
my friends are obsessed with this they wont stop saying DUNKIN BAGEL
Now I am hungry; lol!
Oh-voughty-rootey
Very Hip and most Welcome...we grew up with the 78's but seeing Slim Play is a real treat !
That drummer is Benjamin Sherman "Scatman" Crothers. Mostly known for being the voice of none other than Hong Kong Phooey.
@@markswann Also played the police officer in The Shining.
@@iancurtiswishlist4996 I don't like being wrong for any longer than is necessary so thank you for correcting me. Didn't know that he;d featured in One Flew Over. What a fascinating character he is. I've just found a book about him "Remembering Scatman Crothers" by Gary E Taylor. I'm on vacation for the next couple of weeks so might put that at the top of my reading list.
@@iancurtiswishlist4996 Just to get even more obscure, he took over the voice of "Go Man van Gogh" in the cartoon Beany & Cecil after the original voice actor (none other than Lord Buckley!) was killed

...Scatman Crothers became quite an actor thru the 1950's onward he was in film after film...so from soundies like this one to...movies to television...to bigger and bigger parts...it's good to know... it's good to see him in these early films being a musician...I am glad he was able to keep going with his career... I'm glad it all paid off!!!
I remember him from "Chico and the Man" "Stick out your can... 'cause here comes the garbage man!"
Better Things brought me here.
Me too!
Same
Me too!
My Bubbee brought me here after I caught him singing it and I was like “is that a real song!?” Lol
"Splash! In the coffee" - loved this track for years after seeing it on some old channel 4 show on jazz. Infectious joy
"Smash" in the coffee....
At 1:05 it does sound like "splash"...
There is a documentary here on RUclips where he explains his birth place as Cuba. I think he is so missed and under rated. What a genius! We play Slim on 78's regularly. My kids cant eat a Potato Chip without singing. (look it up if you do not know that one very catchy) He is my favorite jazz musician. Funny & talented.
Potato Chip is hilarious!
Truly a great musician that needs to be born again and appreciated
Slim was so cool and talented! Play the piano and guitars, and Lord knows what other instruments he could play?
I remember Slim even though I was just a little kid when he died. Slim was so hip, he had difficulty seeing over his pelvis. And Slim was so cool, you could store a side of beef in him for a month.
Delightfully droll and hipper than hip!
Bam Brown on bass, a very comical sidekick while he lasted. Kinds ended up going crazy, but sure was funny in his day. With Scatman Crouthers on the drums, this was quite a trio!
Beyond hip. Slim was so creative on his guitar lines.
Heard this on Better Things, now here I am!
SLIM, SLAM, and BAM! ON FILM!
Slim and the cats are groovy-o-rooni
Just in the pocket..no fireworks. I'm jealous. just right there.,,wump wump wump.
He was the first person to record a song titled "Rock Around the Clock" which, although completely different to Bill Haley's, the title was said to have inspired Jimmy de Knight, co-composer of the Haley song.
This is fantastic! I always knew Scatman Crothers was cool, but this proves it!
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT
Great trio! I especially love the bass-man!
That's Bam Brown.
This just makes me happy!!
Great video. I met Slim back in the early 80's, a real gentleman.
Yep us too. Such a gentleman in deed.
This brings me so much joy...
1:52 That drummer had me rolling with laughter 🤣
Trio excelente. Música muito gostosa de se ouvir.
Enjoying this with my bourbon-orooni!
Without a doubt. You are so right!
Yep another great old post, Thanks Nicky always look forward to your posts, nice work.
un monument ....de doc ........SUPER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They were delightful; special nod to his bassist.
I had no idea Scatman Crothers was a musician and played the drums. You learn something every day.
You can't be both...("How many are in the band?" "It's a trio. Two musicians and a drummer")
@@musicofanaticmaybe I’m missing a joke or something, but drummers are definitely musicians.
@@jordanposnik6663 The guy above said something about Crothers being "a musician AND played the drums"...both! Yeah, too literal...drummer jokes...being one, I got a million of 'em!
I love this, thankyou
The Definition of 'high as a kite' :D
Glorious!
Great song!!
FANTASTIC MUSICIANS !
THANK YOU.
Ahhh jazz! After watching this guy I'm now a fan:)
OMG!!!!!! Love this !!!!
The drummer is Scatman Crothers, of "Chico and the Man" "Sandford and Son" and "Hong Kong Phooey" fame. Oh and he had a part in "The Shining"
And "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"...
He was also the Autobot Jazz from the Transformers cartoon and movie
he also had his picture on the san fernando phone book in the early 80's, i think. this was the first real supergroup power trio. i don't care what anybody says. thanks for posting this historical stuff.
Nice..............in the coffee!...........
Thanks to my Brother Scott McNeal who led me to this site!! This was one of my late Pop's favorite songs he sang to us!!
to cool!
the best
So cute. Found it after Swing Ninjas cover. Dont need to sweet my coffe for a week now. So cute and sweet. Let me play that again please.
This should be in the Syllabus of every College course.
Vouteeeeeee.
Pickled herring-o-rooney…. I can only love it. Most any food song is worth a listen and the fact that the bagel goes Smash! in the coffee more so. A lot of Slim & Slam, and Slim & Blam are on cd with great stuff from USO shows.
These guys are great !!! Thanks for the post!! I think this song was in a movie in the 90's with John Goodman and Richard Dreyfuss ? Can't remember the name but, they were forest fire fighters flying tanker aircraft ??
"Always"
Dunkin Bagels - Smash in the coffee!!! The best.
That drummer is TOTALLY FUCKING BADASS.
such beautiful traditional Jewish mcVroutie. who can believe,I am asking. and scatman on drums yet!
does have a bit of a klezmer vibe...
Allreet-solid
Sophisticated lyrics. An early 2unlimited? No no, no no no no, no no no no, no theres no limit.
The Central avenue crowed.
that's Mr. Scatman Crothers on the drums!
...good eye there...
Nobody like Slim & Slam, or as seen here, Slim & Bam, with Bam Brown replacing Slam Stewart on bass after WWII.
The correct lyric is not "splash" but "smash... in the coffee".
This song was a minor cult hit for my Elastic Band in Jerusalem in 2011-12.
For a similar swinging Jewish food song by Slim Gaillard, check out "Matzo Balls".
I wonder if this song inspired the founder of Dunkin Donuts that came out in the 50's. ;)
Most likely.... Donuts are eminently more dunkable in coffee than bagels! Slim also combined matzah balls with gefilte fish, when they belong in chicken soup.... "normally"....
Dunkin Donuts should certainly license it and create an ad campaign
Зачёт!!!
Just a sittin and a rock
I wish Rhinestone Thong would do a cover of this song! That would be awesome!

Better Things S04E01
Slim , plays an epiphone ,,,Cool ,,,,
A proper Epiphone!!
This song is used in Better Things ...
Pickled herring, bagels, and a few other things he said were 100 percent JEWISH exclusively in America at this time. Sounds like he spent time in a Jewish Deli...in NYC or New Orleans. . yea ..he says Matzah Balls ... He was around the Jews somewhere or he wrote the tune as a comedic piece for us Hebrews at the time. Great player !!!!
It happens like that. My family is 100% not Jewish, but my father grew up in a Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx and loved Jewish deli food and knew every type of Jewish deli food like an expert. I remember as a kid, instead of a Snickers bar or some other candy, he'd go into a deli and get half a pound of vanilla flavored halvah, and they'd wrap in up in wax paper and tied it with a string and that would be our big treat. Still love the stuff, but it's harder to find nowadays.
He would fit right in with the NYC Jewish community at that time! Lots of good feelings and laughs!
His father was a German Jew, although he didn't grow up in New York. He was born in Cuba and didn't come to the States until he was grown.
O'Vootee
O' roonie
Charlie Christian, we hardly knew ye.
Is this at Billy Berg's, in LA? This would be the same time as Bird and dizzy played there.
Scatman Crothers on drums.
better things
why can't we make songs like this nowadays? people always talking about having girl/boy friends and those about sex and material things.. talk about the simple things like dunking bagels in your coffee x)
@MegaDoc83 Sure is.
As a Tottenham supporter hahaha I will have this as one of my most favourite tunes.
Chriddof brought me here.
Solitaire..
Dunk in my bagels right now. It’s arrooney
No mention of Bourbons here. strange.
over a hundred years old, amazing
O-roonie-mo!
Slim was WAY hipper than Chappelle. it takes MUCH more talent and skill to PLAY/master a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, like Slim did.
Was that Scatman Crothers on drums?
+stepchildofsoul
yes!
+Barry Kolsky I ended up googling it, but thanks. I found out Scatman was on some other records I have, too. He's one of my favourites.
Yes, they sure do BECAUSE they are HEBREW musicians. Like these (2) great pianists here on RUclips who listened to their music: Ray Charles & Oscar Peterson Play A Blues Duet - Very Rare. Enjoy!
Nope. Modern Day Jews are the descendants of the Hebrew Israelites. Not black Americans
Rice-a-roni!
SMASH! (In the coffee)
Better things...
80's Dunkin Donuts
All of this will return...sooner than later. The Most High has only given us a TASTE of the music that's designed for beautiful planet Earth. We have yet to hear all the heavenly chords, just some. You might enjoy this music by (2) brilliant pianists who listened to this music, here on RUclips: Ray Charles & Oscar Peterson Play A Blues Duet - Very Rare. Shalom.
When the Lord rules we will see humor in entertainment that will make people laugh so hard we will have tears running down our cheeks from joy.
I hope you are right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always pictured him smaller than this...
Slim Gaillard was quite an interesting person. He was the Dave Chappelle of his time.
Slim was not cynical humor... Dave was.
I come here cause of watch mojo
superb musicianship, subversive and facetious , deflating the self importance of these jazz freaks ....coool.
Yes - insightful encapsulation of events there, Des. My impression was - messing around with sincerity and commitment. Messing around in the most sincere and committed way.
But dunkin DONUTS though lol
Slims daughter is Marvin Gaye's 2nd wife who was a teenager when they met and they had kids together...
What year is this?
1947
idk what music your listening to that talks about having girlfriends and materialistic shit... u just have to look in the right places and not pay attention to what the media supplies for everyone... thats there attempt at dumbing everyone down... BTW this song was stuck in my head this morning while i was dunkin my bagels in my coffee!
The fuck he say in the beginning?😂😂 What?😂
Is that Fats Navarro on bass?
:-)
Man how much weed did Slim consume before this performance, that is fantastic guitar playin
Its a shame that people think you can only be happy if you are high on something.
Not to mention he can write, sing and play piano like a dream..we need to support more people like that in the modern day. They're out there but don't get enough recognition
@@reginaayat5390 A very tasty piano player, for sure.
