The Metaphys Archetype - Failed Cards and Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

  • In today's video, we'll cover the Metaphys archetype that appeared in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG set, Duelist Alliance. Their first debut card was a Level 7 Vanilla, Metaphys Armed Dragon, a 2700 ATK/1800DEF Llght attribute Wyrm monster. Either than aesthetics and name, this card wouldn’t carry any relevance in the archetype and would sit amongst stacks of bulk cards. So, with no sight of this card seeing any action, it was written off as just a pack filler.

Metaphys looks like a deck made for the anime, it's passive enough for the M.C. to come up with a plan and destructive enough to put it on a pinch, probably if it appeared in the anime, it would have more and better support.

Card art that is a reference to old classic monsters
And a boss monster that is hard to summon but did very little to help out.

same here, if built properly it can really carry your games and make some turn 3 or 4 wins look easy, although with most of it effects being only focused on your own board building and laying out high atk monsters it has a very hard time responding to the incredibly fast pace that most other decks have at it's power level, and struggles to adapt to anything that countspells it. i also found that if someone was running something that also relied on summoning cards that are above 3500 atk and def, you really had to pull teeth out to even stand much a chance. while i loved the deck and used it for large majority of my dual links experience, if you didnt get 2 or 3 cards that started your combos or if you got shutdown early, it was nearly impossible to win against a more main stream player. not to say it's weak, it just needs to to really fill out it's combos and to have it not be locked to your standby phase

metaphys has a lot of potential due to its design considering it's just a bunch of iconic monsters turned into wyrm "ghostly" versions they could quite easily make the deck good if they went through and gave them versions of more recent iconic cards and somewhat mimicked thier effects, lots of potential to capitalise on and if they actually pushed the deck it would probably be possible to get a lot of people into it, like yeah armed dragon and horus is cool but half the other cards are based on cards most people probably don't remember, like give them metaphys firewall and metaphys code talker cards or something and give them some actual plays during thier turna dn they'd probably be decent, considereing they really come off a s a prototype for ghoti design wise

I think a great episode of failed mechanics would be the Rituals as a mechanic.
They are pretty much Extra deck monsters trapped in the Main Deck, and their effects needed to be straight up broken to work (Which could be considered similar to the case of ABC Dragon Buster as Unions as a failed mechanic)

One thing I thought would be a cool idea to modernize the deck is new retrains based on the evolved forms the original variants of many cards in the deck recieved.
    Daedalus -> Neo Daedalus
    Nephthys -> Cerulian Phoenix
And maybe Tyrant Burst for Tyrant, even though they aren’t directly related.
For a new boss I would love to see a new synchro with some caveat that allow both level 7 and 8 metaphys monster to make it, with executioners protection, and the ability to negate a card effect by banishing itself to special summon a metaphys card from your graveyard or banish zone, then special summoning itself back during the next standby phase.
Final three things I would like, a monster that can special summon itself by banishing a card in your hand, a card to allow you to banish a metaphys card from your deck to add a banished metaphys card to your hand, and a metaphys version of psychic end punisher because I run that for no other reason then they can make it and it’s funny.

Well this card here is already a connector to all three, and I feel the “Metaphys” cards should all have _some_ gameplay connections to the cards they were before (either by their own effects or through the effects of another related card.) And having such a connection allows ALL the related archetypes to play nicer together and with the game in general. Not to mention having cross archetype support can allow normally struggling archetypes pull out new tricks in an ever evolving game. Help keep the meta on it’s toes and all that. LV and Metaphys monsters have more or less fallen out of favor anyway, so having this would help then get back on their feet without being TOO much.

Well, I feel the Metaphys cards should have no gameplay connection to the cards they used to be or that surrounded the cards they used to be.
Gameplay connections, i. e. working together as a deck, is the in-game equivalent of relationships between individuals but ascending to the Wyrm-state transforms the Dragons who undergo it fundamentally: now they are different beings, they have no attachment to the cards they used to work with and might even be in a completely different world.

I always loved using Metaphys as an engine in Nordic. They're perfect targets for the Nordic link to banish to use her effect to special 3 from deck. You can get the search right away off banishing the trap and get the effects of the monsters next turn, which gets around the archetype lock of the nordic link since it wont be your turn anymore.

My personal favourite way to use Metaphys is alongside Nordics, as they're basically the only archetype that can benefit from being banished by Gullveig, due to their turn delay getting around her restrictions. It's not a *good* deck per se, but certainly the best use of them I've found.

There needs to be a card, maybe a monster that as long as it exists in the graveyard and sent their by card effect, all Metaphys monsters are banished by its effect. Also maybe a continuous spell that allows you to Special Summon Metaphys monsters the moment their banished to trigger their effects right away.

I feel like the new Memento archetype is another take on the ideas Metaphys had, or at least in terms of designs. They are both Archetypes of retrained monsters (most of them being Normal Monsters), with a focus on doing something to their own monsters (banishing themselves for Metaphys, and destroying themselves for Memento), and they have a boss monster that requires banishing/shuffling 5 members of their own archetypes from your hand and/or field (Metaphys Executor) or GY (Mementoral Tecuhtlica, the Netherskull Dragon). Let's hope this new, spiritual Archetype, is good or at least decent.

I used to run some insane metaphys builds and got to diamond in MD running them with necroface almost purely. Power creep got them when most of the meta decks prefer you to banish their cards and decks and then they go + off your effects. Also runick beat them down pretty bad. Genuinely one of the most fun decks I have ever run, and I look back on it fondly. Some core support for this deck could easily revive it though! Likely, it would just be a continuous spell or trap that pushes them even deeper into irrelevance.

Idea to make the “Metaphys” cards easier to use:
    _Metaphys Ascension_
    Quick play spell
_Tribute 1 monster with a level or rank from your hand or field: Special summon 1 “Metaphys” monster from your hand or GY who’s Level equals the level/rank of the tribute. You can banish this card from your GY (face-up or facedown). The following effects are applied while this card is banished (face-up or facedown):_
⚪️If a “Metaphys” monster you control attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage.
⚪️If the summon or effect of a “Metaphys” you control resolves: You can add 1 “Metaphys” card of a matching name to your hand from your deck or GY.
⚪️If a “Metaphys” card from your hand or field is banished: You can shuffle 1 banished card you own back into your deck.

The thing about face-down banishment is that the cards banished face-down have no bearing on the game.
The owner can look at them and technically choose which one to move elsewhere, if a card the effect of which moves all kinds of banished cards gives them that choice (such as Arise-Heart), but their effects cannot be activated and don't apply.
Face-down banished cards are also private information, perhaps even if your opponent saw which card was banished face-down, so it's not like they can confirm the text of your face-down banished cards.
If you just remove the brackets altogether (because unless otherwise specified cards are always banished face-up, I think), this would work.
However, if you want to keep that option, you could instead turn the passive effect into a lingering one, that is activated by banishing the card from your GY either face-up or face-down.
„You can banish this card from your GY either face-up or face-down; for the rest of the duel, apply the following effects:
⚪If a “Metaphys” monster you control attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage.
⚪If the summon or effect of a “Metaphys” you control resolves: You can add 1 “Metaphys” card of a matching name to your hand from your deck or GY.
⚪If a “Metaphys” card from your hand or field is banished: You can shuffle 1 banished card you own back into your deck.“
This way your opponent can disrupt this play with D.D. Crow before you regain priority on your turn, but once activated the effect is always active and it doesn't matter what happens to the card afterwards.

Besides that, the card is solid and I'd like to see it printed.
However, it's _very_ similar to Dracocension, and since the summoned Metaphys has little to do with the monster tributed, and the card gives you the option to tribute a Wyrm or Metaphys monster for another Metaphys monster, it's less an Ascension than a Metaphys Interruption, Interlude, or simply an Exchange or Shift.
I guess it might also be a Metaphys Takeover, Arrival, or Descent but if you tributed a Metaphys monster, the Metaphys have already arrived/descended.
I imagine that aside from searching out a Metaphys monster, you'd also use this card to dodge targeted negation; both these uses fall into the niche of Heavenly Dragon Circle.
This doesn't really matter, though, it's just a question of flavour (a topic where we may have to agree to disagree).

As much as it pains me to admit, a fantastic addition to add onto the Failed Cards and Mechanics would be "War Rock". An already outdated Battle Phase focused archetype that barely lives, because one of its main enablers is a RotA for its Spell/Trap Cards that doubles as a floodgate.
And all of them fail in comparison to another existing battle related archetype "Amazoness", which had a good batch of support that includes their own RotA, more boss monsters, and Pend Monsters to swarm the field much better than "War Rocks" can.

Played it a lot in Master Duel, good fun! Decoy Dragon especially was great, majority of Master Duel players don't read card effects and just ram into it blindly haha
Not mentioned in video, but another problem with Decoy Dragon was it's Pendulum effect didn't count as summoning by a Metaphys monster effect, so monsters it summoned while in Pendulum zone didn't trigger their effects.
Never played Executor for the reasons stated in video, but it's one of the very few cards ever to have the "Can not be banished" protection. Might be the only one that also has "Can not be destroyed by card effects" together with the banish protection.

  • @animalshavingabeer3582

This archetype just needs to be completed and it would be perfectly serviceable, because once it gets set up, its incredibly interactive and resilient. I don't know why they released a fantastic scale 1 pendulum like decoy without a scale 8 counterpart. It would give decoy more flexibility, let you circumvent the risk of using your normal summon on ragnarok, and beyond that, get enough bodies on the field during your first turn to take advantage of the vast array of synchros that metaphys has access to so you can survive and build crazy boards.
Not saying it would be rogue, but this deck is perfectly capable of beating decks like Labrynth, Runick, and Branded with the right execution, even in its current sorry state.

It kind of sucks that Protos and Eschatos aren't each called Archenemesis, given that they are the boss monsters of the archetype, the two nemeses supported by the Keystone, the Corridor, the Umbrella, and the Flag (nemeses being the plural or nemesis).
I get that archetyping works like that but they _could_ have given them the clause in their card text to always be treated as Nemeses cards (at least outside of Japan).
Unless the nemeses referred to in the names are not Protos and Eschatos but something else, which even those two only embody to an extent.

You already said sth similar, but i want to point out more, that Its not an argument for an archetype, if we need other maybe broken stuff to make it work. Sword Soul is/was part of the Meta for years and we will always have anti-meta decks with Macro, so Metaphys is a fun option, which cant survive on its own right now, and its far away of being viable and you coud also make the point, that decks like Swordsoul get weaker by combining them with Metaphys, cause there are other better options like more floodgates or handtraps.
I would say Metaphys either need ways of surviving til the standby phase and then they need broken effects to make the wait worthwhile or activate their effects instanly (similar to floo).
