Bill and Geezer really were what drove this track. Tony took the backseat here and it’s so damn tastefully done. Difficult as it is to narrow down this is my absolute favorite in the entire Sabbath catalog.
I do not understand a lot about drumming or why some others are considert 'better' than others. I just know that there is something in the way he fills that track and its just godlike to me
Bill Ward didn't care much about being "proper" he didn't care to having perfect timing and what not. All he cared about was the "feel" of the song. To me he's more like someone who writes really good movie sound tracks like John Williams (who did star wars / jurassic park / etc). Hell pretty much everyone in black sabbath was unorthodox in their play styles.
Couldn't have said it better. I heard this song this morning and his drumming gives this song so much momentum. There seemed to be a lot more of the Bongo sound on the radio version.

It's called playing without a metronome and pushing the beat. Gives the illusion of anticipation. It's a driving song so playing ahead of the beat seems to be suitable for this song. There are songs that he plays behind the best for that added suspense.
Omg THANK YOU for posting this video. For decades I've driven myself crazy trying to emulate the drums for this song. Always been a Sabbath fan, when I started playing hardest rock, I didn't consider Sabbath as metal, we didn't have the net to seperate instruments being played. We had the vinyl and ears. So unless you knew a sound engineer, you depended on your hearing to figure it out!! Since Bill was such an extraordinary percussionist, He played with decisive beats that you could pickup his rythmn without a lot of work.
