If your kid tells you they're being stalked by the boogeyman, believe them. There were plenty of parents back in the 80's who didn't believe their kids about Cropsy and now they have to live that guilt for the rest of their lives.

@@coltonhoath2179 Cropsy was an urban legend type character from New York folklore who stalked and murdered children. Parents were so confident he didn't exist (and honestly who can blame them, it sounds like a campfire story) that they dismissed their children's sightings of him and let them walk home from school unsupervised. Things came to a head in the 1980's when a mentally man was discovered to be living in the abandoned mental asylum, the Willowbrooks, on the outskirts of town. It turned out that he really had been kidnapping and murdering special needs children, supposedly because he wanted to 'save' them from the type of abuse he suffered while he and his mother were patients at the Willowbrooks. The children who had escaped Cropsy told other kids, who then retold and exaggerated the accounts, giving him features like a scarred face and a hook for a hand. By the time the story reached the adults, Cropsy had become a mythic figure who they thought could never exist in real life. After the disappearance of several down syndrome afflicted children, Cropsy was caught and is currently in a maximum security prison for the criminally insane. The ruins of the Willowbrooks asylum still stand, and the surviving relatives of the victims continue to search the ground for the remains of any children who might not have found yet, so that hopefully any cold cases involving Cropsy's MO can finally be closed.

However it seems that creepypastas in general suffer from the syndrome of being written to quickly, like the beginning was good and it set the mood but the rest happened so fast that in the end the head cutter wasn't as horrifying as he could have been.

    • @Skittenmeow
      @Skittenmeow 2 года назад +13

And how many scary realities would be prevented?
In the 90s I grew up and went to school next to an asylum for the criminally insane.
That place had regular escapes, many not announced to the public, because it was a fairly wealthy neighborhood and perhaps they didn't want to lower property values.
Escapes of particularly dangerous individuals were announced by police, but even when they wandered across the road into the school it was seen as "No big deal".
Parents/ teachers ignored "weird guy hanging around... following us home" stories.
Even when we had the Claremont Serial Killer active in the neighborhood in 1996/97 it was not seen as a big deal.
"Creepy guy in the neighbourhood lurking around" stories were ignored. The "weirdo near the local cemetery" reports we were making in 1995 were also ignored.
The killer was finally charged in 2020 for a r*pe/abduction in 1995 along with two murders in 96/97 and other brutal crimes.
One girl, Sarah Spiers, has yet to be found. I vaguely knew her. The killer wasn't charged with her murder due to lack of evidence.
The convicted killer matches the description my brother gave me at the time, of a creep "scoping the area" that night Sarah disappeared; seen within a block of where she disappeared.
Even almost 25 years later my brother recognises him, and he'd tried to make a police report back in 1996 but was ignored as a teenager trying to get in on the hype. Maybe if they'd listened to us teens in 1995 none of the murders would have happened.

This story was better than I thought it was going to be. Lighthouse, you are just like your namesake, dependably keeping that signal going out every day. Great job.
P.S. After listening to the story fully, do you think that this story is just an excuse to beat your kids? That way they are safe from the Head Cutter. Make you think, eh?

  • @Ela.elizabeth

This one was excellent. It was actually scary - I think there has to be two elements to a scary story to make it actually scary & suspenseful: (1) enough character development that we actually care about the character and empathize with them, and (2) some element of the situation, no matter how creative or unique, in which we can picture ourselves suffering the same fate - so relatability. For me, it's the idea of waking up in some guy's basement, urban legend or just regular Joe Shmoe.
Makes me wonder if men and women find the same stories scary overall. Men obviously don't deal with even a quarter of the scariness in every day life that women do, making more situations along these lines relatable, and thus terrifying. Women have to worry about men jumping them, beating them, raping them pretty much all the time they're out in the world, especially at night. I wonder if the ideas of those situations are as scary to most men, since they're not scenarios that generally run through their minds often as something that could legitimately happen to them.
Men, what scares you in a scary story?
Great job to the author and to LH narrating as always! ☀️

I wouldn't say that. I have plenty of male friends who fell victim to sexual assault and beatings at the hands of the opposite sex. Do they as a majority feel it as much as women? No. But as a woman myself I'm personally suspicious of everyone especially my own sex because I know it's harder to convict one as a crime compared to a man.

I think the fact that parents don't expose children to the world is why they trust their children less about their observations. Fairytales used to be dark because the world is. Don't traumatize them, obviously, but look up why and how Coraline became a children's book. They are tough and can handle more than you think, protect them from weirdos, but don't undereducate them by never telling them to be careful of them. People forget they are 3 meals from anarchy, and someone may only be two. Or one...

The Headhunter would be a badass nickname. The Head Cutter just sounds like a jittery barber. But he's a better man than I. He made an intricate doll. I'd just put marbles in the eyeholes, stuff them with sawdust, and hang them over my obscenely large fireplace.
