- US Coast Guard cutter USCGC "Bertholf" during an exercise in the East China Sea. USCGC Bertholf (WMSL-750) is the first Legend-class maritime security cutter of the United States Coast Guard. The Legend-class cutter, also known as the National Security Cutter (NSC) and Maritime Security Cutter, Large, is the largest active patrol cutter class of the United States Coast Guard. Entering into service in 2008, the Legend-class is the largest of several new cutter designs developed as part of the Integrated Deepwater System Program.

My father was a member of the US coast guard in Vietnam, he received the Navy commendation metal for combat and US combat action ribbon.

While working at Coast Guard headquarters I heard many harrowing stories of the bravery of Coast Guard chopper pilots and their crew flying in the face of gale force storms trying to rescue boat passengers before sinking and at their fuel limits for a safe return.
Yep, had mine during hurricane Andrew out of New Orleans. Seven fisherman dropped off at a small airport and our fuel state low enough for the air station to fly another helicopter out to pick up our copilot and rescue swimmer and escort me an the pilot back in case our engines flamed out due to lack of fuel. Good times.

I agree I served aboard USCGC Cook Inlet (WHEC-385) 311 ft Cutter out of Portland Maine from 1968-1970 and you are right things have changed significantly.

It's been 42 yrs since I went in and I still don't see myself as an Old Coastie, since there are plenty of Coastie's still around from the 60's & 70's. That honor goes to them...👊respect👊

Back when the 12 WHECs had sonar. Do you recall any ST on Mellon? I was an ST on the Midgett (1980) and then Hamilton (1981 - 1982).

Coast Guard has been slowly been upgrading since 911. When I was in the 41 and 32 footers were replacing the 30 and 40 footers. Love to buy a old 40 footer. An old PO3 MK here
Curious to what you would call an "old coastie"? I once met a guy who called himself and old Coastie, and he went in - in the early 90's! Hahaha. When I mentioned I went to bootcamp in Alameda, he didn't even know there was a bootcamp there at one time! I was in from 1980 - 1987...and still don't consider myself an "old coastie". When I reported to my 1st small boat station, our 41, 41449, was on it's way but had to be taken back to Baltimore to get its superstructure replaced. A detour took it under a low bridge. Ripped it right off. It replaced our 40. We got a 30 from Sta St Clair Flats when it was being shut down in 79. 40's were great for plucking people out of the water, but 41's were great for wet weather. Retired RM/TC sends.

For one thing. It's not a COMBAT boat, it's a Cutter. Another, I'm sure the Navy may have a thing to say about "size".

@@glhmedic I did, why I pointed out, that's a wrong way to refer to it. Thats like when people refer to the 140's as "ice breakers", it's a Tug able to break ice, Not "ice breaking Tug) what it's referred to as a WTGB, Coast Guard TUG glacial breaker. WMSL stands for Coast Guard Maritime Security CUTTER Large. They should have kept the WHEC, since thats what it replaced. But in the infamous wisdom at the puzzle palace, they have to be all cool and rename the class, but capable of combat, as is any WMEC's and others, combat is NOT in it's standard naming consideration. But hey, whats in a name, right?

That looks a Legend class combat cutter for those who don't know maybe 758
“Words mean something.” The Legend class US Coast Guard Cutters are not designed specifically for combat - they are armed and can operate with the Navy but they do much more. They are currently the largest US Coast Guard Cutters but many navies have significantly larger vessels. Boats are those smaller orange thing being launched and recovered via their stern ramp.
As someone who was on this cutter this is not the largest CGC in the Coast Guard. The Alex Healy is 420' from bow to sterm. The WMSL class are 418' the LRI (Large response intercept) and the MK4 are launched out of the stern notch (the back of the boat) and off the starboard (right) davot (which is the side). You are correct this is not a combat boat. This boat is used for SAR (Search & Rescue) and LE (Law Enforcement).
@@Cierrajuleee Thank you. I retired a bit over 21 years ago having served aboard six cutters ranging from 110 ft to 210 ft that were commissioned between 1927 and 1990. I suspected Healy might be a bit larger but wasn’t sure.

USCG Healy is actually the largest Coast Guard cutter, not the Legend Class ships.
Not every USCG vessel is a cutter. Healy is an icebreaker.

It’s actually a Cutter. US Coast Guard vessels larger than 65’ are called Cutters. If they are smaller than that, then they are called Boats.

As an old "coastie", I would like to know who called this a "Combat" boat ? With no disrespect, how long would this boat last in a fight with an hostile destroyer or frigate? We all need to remember the SHEFFIELD and how she fared with the over the horizon missile attack....not well. The CG should stick to it's mission and call on it's big brother when they need.

I was wondering the same thing. I wonder if they mean combat support vessel? as in it supports smaller combat units?
@@Bendigo1 CG performs force protection when requested by the Navy. The Navy knows (and admits) that the CG's mission and ability to function in areas the Navy normally doesn't (i.e., boarding's just to name one). I wouldn't put any CG vessel head to head against a DDG much less a FFG because they are not designed to do the same mission(s). But history shows the CG not only can hold it's own, it's pretty darn good at taking out threats. And to be honest, I doubt a big grey boat can get into ports or areas where there is a hostile attitude towards the U.S., but the CG HAS had a favorable dialog with even Chinese war vessels. And I think if one remembers last year, a CG 110 patrol boat didn't hesitate to fire on a Iranian fast boat acting in a threating manner during it's force protection role in the middle east.

That was back when pilots were damn good. I saw many landings in rough weather on a 378' CUTTER.

I asked him "How do YOU do it?"
I never saw myself on film, asked him if he'd ever seen a bird land on 378, he said he did it, never saw it live. Good times

127x16 meters (418X54 feet) 4,500 tons, they are classified in US Coast Guard as cutter. But they did offer the same hull as a frigate.
Another country that operate large coast guard vessel, like Norway, they call them for "offshore patrol vessel", Norway's 105 meter Nordkapp class, was to be re-armed as a frigate, if war. They are replacing there's coast guard vessel, with even larger vessel, a 136.4 meter ship

Combat Cutter is a stretch. The cutter part is ok except for the inadequate suite of weapons she is armed with. The command staff who approved several classes of cutters armed with a sub caliber 57 mm main gun should be retired or relegated to the records section. The 57 mm gun was developed as a secondary battery gun designed to shoot at targets too close in to use the main guns and to target incoming anti ship missiles. It was never designed to be a main gun. The Coast Guard by doing this they risk loosing the cutter and its crew. The 57 mm is seldom used to fire into vessels who refuse to stop as in the years past. Warning shots are typically fired with a machine gun. If our cutter had to engage multiple small attack boats like Iran uses a single forward firing gun leaving her beams and stern open for attack. Now maybe the phlanix could be brought to bear but it lacks the range to attack the vessels before they are able to bring their rockets to bear on the cutter. Against an armed naval vessel, even a small corvette could and does pose a major threat to even our largest cutters armed only with the 57 mm gun. In WW2 our Secretary Class cutters measuring only 327’ were armed with 3, yes 3, 5” 38 caliber main guns. The later 378’ cutters still maintained the 5”” main gun. While the WW2 era gun is outdated today, the 5” shel is not. There was no reason that the current Navy Mark 45 5” gun could not have been easily installed into cutters a hundred feet longer than the WW2 era cutters. In fact the Secretary class cutters were comparably armed as destroyers and destroyer escorts. The biggest thing our cutters lacked compared to a destroyer was their speed. But these foresight lacking officers are not done yet. They have proposed that the yet to be built ice breakers will be armed with a single 25 mm gun. A 25 mm gun in a potential face off with a Russian or Chinese ship entering our article territorial waters is foolish at best and deadly at worst.

Anyone can be in international waters for one. Two the US is not the only country that goes around provoking countries to test their responses. Russia does it to us on almost a daily basis at times with their bombers.
