I got the Sense ride 3 after watching this review. In matter of fact I bought 2 pars after really good deal on them. Anyhow, after close to 200km I'm very pleased with it. Excellent grip and durability and not to forget loving the looks. Small concern with lacing, because the tend to become slightly loose after 30min. Thanks for your cool reviews, Sir. Appreciate your content. Keep well!!
Hi Ginger Runner: i have been running in Solomon’s because your excellent reviews you provide. I ran in sense ride #1, had to have them replaced about 100 miles in, the lugs kept wearing out. Salomon replaced them 2 times for me and my friend, still the lugs wore out about 100 miles in. So we decided to try speed cross 4, excellent and much more durable, a bit lower cut, but great response on the trails, Lite weight as well. We are now running in speed cross 4 pro, even better fit. Lugs are starting to wear, its been about 100 miles in again. We live in California, very dry, rocky terrain, just rips up the lugs..so sad. I dont have the heart to try to send these back this time. Salomon has been great in dealing with us, i must say. Salomon will not replace shoes purchased from outlet, ie( REI), so beware.
I bought the original Sense Ride 3x. One for me, one for my wife, and again once for me when I saw the 3rd generation. The original was the best. Retro them someday, Salomon.
I absolutely love the sense ride 3, it's my do everything shoe. If I'm going up in the mountains of Utah and don't know what kind of terrain I'll be on I take these because they can do it all. The sense 4 pro is a great shoe for those that like the sense ride 1 and 2. Light and fast.
The SP4 just does not work for me, I feel its overly flexible and also feel a lack of support through the arch. In addition the upper is way too roomy to the point where my foot is sliding around. Yet going down 1/2size, the upper is too tight across the metatarsal. It's just a failure for me. In any case, how would you compare the Sense Ride 3 to the Wildhorse 4 or 5? The 4 is still my do everything shoe
Very accurate review !!! I just got those shoes and did 15 miles test , yes , havy shoes and not breathable material at all, that's the only bad side , fit perfect , great cushion, great grip, 8 out of 10 rating.
Ran in a lot of Salomon shoes, especially all the Sense series, and I have to say that the Rides were the most unstable of the lot (only ran in the 1 & 2s, no 3s yet) and had trouble getting along with them in anything but buttery smooth trails. Love the SLab lot for racing but the Sense 4 pro is possibly the best trail training shoe one can buy!! Cushion is spot on with the optivibe, perfect 4mm drop, now hydrophobic and the protection is as good if not better than other Sense models. Would recommend the new pros any day over the Rides (pro 3s were very harsh and heavy, the 4s are a completely different shoe and for the better).
That’s really useful info. I think I’ll get the pros. The 4 mm drop is great. There aren’t enough shoes in that middle range between zero drop and high drop.
I also had the 1 and 2 and my only complaint was running on roots with them bc of how soft they were. But like you I really loved them. I had 3 pair of the 1 and 2 pair of the 2. Prob will try the 3.
Got a first couple of miles today in those and man they are comfy. I own a first edition and I love that pair so much. I think these will be perfect follow up. Find them even a bit wider at the front which is a brilliant as Salomon shoes tend to run a bit narrow. Excellent shoes. Thanks for the review Ethan....
Bought the sense ride 1 after watching your review back in 2017/18. They were the best trail running shoes I've ever had! Big steps to follow in for the sense ride 3 here 😉
Just found sense ride 2 on sale for just over $70 on Salomon’s website. Got a couple more backup pairs. I enjoy the sense ride 3 for easy days for something different now and then, but I absolutely LOVE the sense ride 2.
Sense ride 1 still my goto shoe for all the reasons you pointed out, the sort of shoes you can wear all day long. Have the 2 as well so will be interesting to see how these 3's behave.
At around 90 miles my SR3 tore around the toe box flex. Liked the shoes for reasons given. So have a free second pair so will see if durability is really that good. I run in rough trail conditions, mud, rocks wet etc but what the shoe should be designed for. I’ll update ...
I’ve liked v2 in most situations, but when I go downhill by heal slide forward. Maybe I need a half size down, but in every other way, it seems to be the right fit.
After 400 miles on two pairs of the original Sense Ride's, I now have 75 Redmond Watershed miles on the Sense Ride 3's...so far, so good! No baby woodpecker's either! :-)
Hey GR! Looks like the Hoka Torrent 2 is coming out soon, hope you'll get a chance to review it. Thanks for all the great content during this crazy time!
Thanks for the review, Ethan! You got me interested in the SenseRide series last year but I ended up buying the XA Elevate (got a good deal) and absolutely fell in love with them for technical trails and then for everything else. I just recently picked up a pair of SenseRide 2 and I feel like I need more time to really click with them... By comparison they just feel a bit too soft. It is an incredibly comfortable shoe though :) Maybe the 3 will combine the best of both worlds... definitely looking forward to trying it out in a shop once they reopen.
I have been loving the Sense Ride since version 1 (got 2 pairs) and recenlty start using version 2. Amazing feeling since first run and hoping to get as many miles as I got with the previous pairs. Now the struggle is that I saw the version 3 at a very good price and thinking whether to buy now or just wait a bit. Certainly the aesthetics change is quite interesting and changing a bit from the original version but I have a Sense, haha that it is gonna be a good shoe too.
Thanks Ethan! I've just crossed over 100 miles in my Sense Ride 3 and I'm loving them. I had Ride 2 last year but only put 30 miles on them before retiring them to knockarounds. They just didn't have the forefoot protection I was needing for our rocky Northern CO trails. The Ride 3 is a dream with the Optivibe midsole. For my weight, stride and trail surface it's the best, hands down. I just wish the midsole under the heel was a little less beefy. It feels overbuilt. Like if it had 4mm less of Optivibe or was replaced with the old Vibe material then I think it'd be perfect. I know it's sounding like I want the Sense Pro 4, but I don't. I don't think the forefoot protection is gonna be there and I don't think it'll fit as good with my high volume feet.
After watching this I took a shot and googled the Sense Ride 1. Found them on Backcountry in 7.5 and 12.5. For $60. Lucky for me I know a guy with size 12.5 feet.
A criteria not included in your reviews (or anyone else's for that matter!) is just how bad the Sense Rides v1 smell after a few runs. It's not a problem I've had with any other shoe but after a few muddy runs they smelt so bad. A heavily rubberised type odour. Quite unpleasant! Must be the materials used in these things. Keep up the good work dude. Love the reviews 👌.
That Rock reference though 🤣. I wasn’t a fan of the tongue on the 3 - then you brought up the Rock, and all I could think of was his ridiculous WWF promos lol. LOOK AT THE TONGUE LOOK AT THE TONGUE
As someone who ran in about 4 pairs of sense ride 1’s. I was disappointed in the 3’s. Too much cushion and not as responsive. Not as fun. I would recommend the sense pro’s instead.
I agree, love the sense 2's, my favourite shoe at the moment. But when i've been on the trail for 10 mile+, i really start to feel those rocks on the front mid sole.
Had the 2’s and thought they were ok but absolutely loved my 3’s. My 4’s just showed up today and I’m having concerns already. The 4’s are approx 1/2 size longer as well as wider in the toe box giving me a sloppy fit compared to same sized 3’s. The tongue is super rigid and bulky feeling - hopefully it breaks in. Now to decide whether to send them back for a 1/2 size down or get the SLAB Ultra 3. Can anyone comment on differences/similarities of the Sense Ride 3 to the SLAB Ultra 3?
I used the sense ride 2, loved every run until I wore out the inside of the heel. I opened up my brand new backup pair of 2s three weeks ago and I disliked them. I was quickly reminded of the breakin time, where you just can’t get the laces to fit without them feeling over tightened at the top because the materials are a bit stiff. I wonder if the comparison of the 1s to 3s is a similar situation.. may just need to break them in.
All-weather (except for extremely muddy conditions where the good old speedcross 4 is still the best in the business) rock-solid trail shoes that will not let you down. Performs well on short asphalt sections. Over 100 miles and still feels like new. Highly recommended.
I hope he reviews those too. It looks like Salomon went in the direction of making the Sense Ride the bulkier shoe and the Sense Pro the lighter shoe, which is not bad. I want to try the Sense Pro.
Hey thanks for the review! I was looking forward to this one. You pretty much nailed it. One thing I would say that is a big deal to me is that the volume of toe box is shallower than previous 2 models. It has not caused me a problem yet but at long distances I'm sure it will ( havent tried yet). I am going to give them another chance at a half size up, but that will put me at size 11 which I have never wore at any shoe...So ya something of note that may be of use to someone...I hope I can get the sizing right because if I can I think this will be a great do everthing shoe. ( its like the 1's hit the gym)
I just got mine and also very worried about that shallow toe box..fraid, very afraid. Shallow plus stiff materials, usually means death to top of my toes, especially lately, seems like a trend for shallow toe box height.
@@LifeInTheLongRun I just took them out today for the first time I've got mixed feelings, surprisingly width wise they were fine, I don't know if I've ever said that about Salomon...(In fact I think the only shoe from them I've ever had with a roomy enough toe box for me was the very first Sense Pro nothing else from them has worked) But the low toe box was an issue, putting the shoe on I could feel the toe cap resting on my big toe. I thought that's where the problem would be... surprisingly my big toe is fine but six or seven miles in my little toes were hurting from the low toe box height I've got a shoe tree in there now hoping to stretch it out a little bit I may try them again with a thicker sock hopefully they'll ease up, I'm on the fence right now I ended up taking off the shoes after 7 miles & changing into some old comfortable shoes to finish my run.
@@LifeInTheLongRun oh, mid foot was fine but I have duck feet :-) They are heavy, they are tanks, I'm not used to shoes that substantial, little bit warm too..
I love my goretex Ride 2 best trail running shoes ive owned. Currently waiting on 3 pairs of ride 3 lol one for work, another blues ones breathable, and gtx gortex ones for rain/wet environments. Ive never bought shoes like this.....only thing with these shoes is if you dont use them exclusively for trails and wear them on alot of hard surfaces the contragrip disappears in few months but still worth it, whatever other shoe i put on after these feel like dogshit
Thank you Ethan! I have been a big fan of the Sense Max series and I know that those are gone bye bye. I heard this new ride is kinda like a hybrid between those 2 shoes. Question for you sir: For my feet the sense Max had more volume, especially at the forefoot where the sense ride was Slightly tight across my forefoot. Is the New ride fit at all wider or spacious like the ole sense Max? Thanks!
I have been thinking of getting sense ride because it is a more nimble trail shoes. Then sense ride 3 came out and I am hesitating. It is like out of theme.
I use Hoka's in the size 10.5. I would like to get these Salomon Sense Ride. What's your experience and recommendation concerning sizing compared to Hoka One One?
200 miles on mine and going great. I wasn’t a fan of v1 and v2, si for me I’m happy to have to be a totally new shoe. The earlier versions weren’t protective enough.
These Sense Ride IIIs look suspiciously similar to the Sense Ride Max (my shoe of choice recently) -- which Salomon suspiciously stopped making. I just ordered a pair and will be curious to see how similar (or not) this shoe feels to the Sense Ride Max.
Any thoughts on shoes with enough grip to run worry-less on wet granite rock surfaces? I'm an Altra guy but their shoes are just horrible on wet rocks (or roots). Thanks
I find the shoe to be very unstable on the trails. Even just hiking in them I feel like every step I could roll my ankle. Did you have any type of sensation like this?
Are you going to review the La Sportiva Jackal? It's been quite a while since you reviewed a La Sportiva shoe and the Jackal should become the new flagship ultra-running shoe for La Sportiva.
Thanks for the great review. Quick question: would you say these have as much “give” in the cushion as Hoka’s (like the Speedgoat)? I’ve shied away from Salomons because every pair I’ve had didn’t have enough cushion or had a rock plate that caused me to roll an ankle. Thanks for the help!
I scored a pair of Sense Ride 2 on sale. Done about 30 miles in them on various trails. Maybe I was expecting a bit much from the shoe, but as far as a rock plate under the fore foot, it's not really there for me. Getting pressure point bruises. Is this going to be the same with the Sense Rider 3? Otherwise it's a great shoe....maybe for more buffed out trails.
Hi, I've got both SR2 and the 3's. The 3's are much more supportive around the ankles and have noticeably better protection in the forefoot so should be a good solution. The big downside for me on the 2's was lack of underfoot protection on rocky trails
edward silva I have no idea. But I know the Lone Peaks have zero drop, while the Sense Rides have 8 mm of drop. That’s a big difference, so that could be a deciding factor.
Sense Ride 1s were great for me...except for the forefoot protection. Not sure what rocky trails you’re running on the the PNW, but here in Missouri the sharp limestone on the trails are a problem with this shoe, as well as gravel fire roads. Although the fit is not as dialed in as the SR1s, my HOKA Challenger ATRs are great on the rocky stuff.
JohnB I think so too. The most comfortable shoes I’ve ever had were some lightweight New Balance road/track running shoes with 6 mm of drop. That intermediate level of drop of 5-6 mm feels like the right balance.
@@30803080308030803081 merrell usually opt for 6mm in their shoes, though some have 8mm. i am currently wearing the agility peak flex (version 1) for trails which features a 6mm drop. they're great. the only problem with merrell is that their products tend to be wildly inconsistent, constantly changing etc and usually not for the better. i'm currently wearing NB fresh foam vongo (version 3) for roads which is a 4mm drop, but I'm probably gonna switch to a hoka 5mm when these are done. i think the salmon sense max has a 6mm drop. but i tried this shoe and it was terrible - the forefoot felt too narrow, the heel too flared and wide. couldnt get a good smooth midfoot strike with it, even though the stats were superb on paper.
Would you use this shoe for both on and off trails? I’m looking for a durable running shoe that I can wear daily around city then jump onto a trail or into the mountains
Bought a pair- took em on a 40mi 12000ft+ 2 day outing and now bought 2 more pairs. Amazing shoe overall for technical and non technical

I have been thinking of getting sense ride because it is a more nimble trail shoes. Then sense ride 3 came out and I am hesitating. It is like out of theme.
Great price! Just picked up a pair in my size.
I use Hoka's in the size 10.5. I would like to get these Salomon Sense Ride. What's your experience and recommendation concerning sizing compared to Hoka One One?
Favorite running shoe from the past few years - love me some SR3s!
Good review Ethan, thanx!
200 miles on mine and going great. I wasn’t a fan of v1 and v2, si for me I’m happy to have to be a totally new shoe. The earlier versions weren’t protective enough.
The sole looks flat. How are these better than the Speed Crosses? I would not feel confident using these on the Bruce Trail.
These Sense Ride IIIs look suspiciously similar to the Sense Ride Max (my shoe of choice recently) -- which Salomon suspiciously stopped making. I just ordered a pair and will be curious to see how similar (or not) this shoe feels to the Sense Ride Max.
While these look like the Sense Ride Max, they don't feel like them. Less cushion. More stability. They are a completely new shoe.
I still hunt for original sense rides. I've bought 4 pairs from between 60-80 USD.
Not a fan of the SR3.
Any thoughts on shoes with enough grip to run worry-less on wet granite rock surfaces? I'm an Altra guy but their shoes are just horrible on wet rocks (or roots). Thanks
Those red Sense ride OGs are 🔥🔥🔥
Is the "real" new Sense Ride 3 actually the Sense Pro 4?
The Ride 3 seems like a Pro Max 3 which is fine. I loved the first version of the Max.
I find the shoe to be very unstable on the trails. Even just hiking in them I feel like every step I could roll my ankle. Did you have any type of sensation like this?
Please please make a review on the sense flow 😢😢
I’m a hiker who wants to get more into trail running for fun. My problem: big fat clown feet! My
Size: 14 2E - any suggestions? The Clown Runner
Are you going to review the La Sportiva Jackal? It's been quite a while since you reviewed a La Sportiva shoe and the Jackal should become the new flagship ultra-running shoe for La Sportiva.
Just picked up the Sense Ride 2 for $50. Feel like I stole them
I did and felt the same 😉👍
I missed out on a pretty good price and I'm so bummed :(
Thanks for the great review. Quick question: would you say these have as much “give” in the cushion as Hoka’s (like the Speedgoat)? I’ve shied away from Salomons because every pair I’ve had didn’t have enough cushion or had a rock plate that caused me to roll an ankle.
Thanks for the help!
I would like to know the answer to this as wel
“The shoe is bombproof.”
Here comes a negative about weight...
“Another dislike is weight.”
**Clap** Yep. Called it.
First salomon that got my fat ass from hiking to starting jogging in the trail. I love it.
Simple , sense ride 3 is more stable on technical trail than the previous version and with more protection (extra weight )
Compared to the lone peak 4.5, which would you recommend for trail runs/ hiking? Thanks for any input
edward silva I have no idea. But I know the Lone Peaks have zero drop, while the Sense Rides have 8 mm of drop. That’s a big difference, so that could be a deciding factor.
How is the Sense Pro 3 different?
How does this compares to Sense 4 Pro ?
I could get them for 67€... should I buy these shoes?
Why does my lower back hurt after running in this shoe?Am I the only one with this problem
I have a wide foot. Can I fit in the sense ride 3 ?
they need to lower the drop to 5 or 6mm and i'd start wearing this
JohnB I think so too.
I am looking for the same.
Take a look at the Nike Pegasus 36 trail and Nike Terra Kiger 6.
I'm gonna get an extra pair of 2's !!!
happy with the sense ride 2
waiting for the funds to return for sense pro 4. looks great
what would you recommend for primary road shoe that could use on trails too?
