I love this - I own the DVD and I saw it in Paris a couple of years ago. Ruth Ann Swenson is wonderful - cannot act? Well - this performance shows different. Big? maybe at home in your TV but not on stage. And you tend to forget a couple of kilos when the voice is so beautiful.
First off it is better to praise the one you prefer then putting down another. This always ends with a matter of personal choice. To say Anna's performance was dead is mean and frankly wrong. In my opinion Anna puts forth passion in all her efforts and I just love her voice. In this performance I happen to agree Swenson sounds "better" but as a novice singer myself, I know how much work goes into this craft and it hurts when anyone is put down. (Now I hope I did not offend you! lol)
I just don't 'get' Terfel's voice. It lacks bottom (cuz he's not a real bass) and yet the top notes don't have that 'heft' you expect in a 'Wagner' voice. Granted, Hoffmann is merciless to the bass lead- three different voices in one opera. But even so, just listening to an old Sutherland- Justino Diaz You Tube, I much prefer his sound to Terfels'. Of course, no one could beat George London in this role! My two cents.....
is said she's not a good actress...and also she's fat. But the reason i agree the most is that the voice has an empty soul. It doesn't transmit anything special. That's why.
